Mangaluru: Orange alert issued in coast, torrential rainfall predicted

Mangaluru, Jul 2: Districts located in coastal Karnataka, Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada, are likely to get heavy rainfall along with thunder and lightning on July 2 and 3. The meteorological department has sounded orange alert in these districts.

Air current on the sea surface is expected to cause heavy rainfall in the coastline of Karnataka as well as in the Western Ghats. Wind velocity will hover around 40 to 50 km per hour, and the department has warned fishermen against venturing into the sea.

Heavy rain is also predicted in districts like Haveri, Vijayapura, Chikkaballapur, Hassan, Kodagu, Shivamogga, Tumakuru, Kolar, Bidar, Dharwad, Gadag, Haveri, Kalaburagi etc. Yellow alert has been issued for these districts.

Kadra in Uttara Kannada district received nine cm of rainfall, which was the highest for Wednesday in the entire state. Kundapur recorded five cm rainfall while Kollur and Karwar received four cm each. The city remained dry most of the time, with the rainfall resuming at night. Mangaluru taluk recorded maximum of 13.6 mm rainfall. Many parts of coastal Karnataka and Chikkamagaluru district had cloudy weather with light showers in between.
