Congress terms PM's speech disappointing, disturbing

New Delhi, Jun 30 (IANS): The Congress has called Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 16-minute address to the nation, here on Tuesday, disappointing and disturbing as he didn't spell out the plans to tackle China and coronavirus.

The Prime Minister announced extension of the PM Garib Kalyan Ann Yojana (PMGKAY) till November 20.

In a statement, Congress spokesperson Jaiveer Shergill said, "When China is extremely violent, the Prime Minister is silent. It's not time to make empty claims, but give dateline when China will be evicted."

The Prime Minister should have told the nation when the country would come down from fourth place on the Covid-19 table, and when Rs 7,500 cash transfer would be made to each Jandhan account.

In a tweet, the Congress said, "India deserves a leader who accepts failures & is open to making improvements. Not one who only believes in ignoring problems and avoids talking about them completely."

The Prime Minister said keeping the needs people in mind the PMGKAY had been extended till Diwali and Chhath Puja. "The scheme will be extended till the end of November," he said.

Modi said more than Rs 90,000 crore would be spent on the extension of the scheme and around 80 crore people would be provided free ration -- five kg wheat or 5 kg rice. Each family would also be provided one kg gram under the scheme every month, he added.

There are many things which requires a factcheck. It's good that certain set of people are offered some benefits. However, recently one of my neighbors highlighted few things, which created some suspicion.
    1. Not all banks are offering moratorium period, they are coming up with unknown terms to deny the moratorium period for the needy ones.
    2. Gold Loans are kept out of moratorium, which has definitely created a panic among the financially week section, that they might lose their gold. Remember, gold loan is a last resort for any individual in a financial crunch situation, when there's no other way.
    3. Few banks conveniently hide the details about the ways of applying for the moratorium period. Or make it super confusing to common people.
    4. One of the popular NBFCs has gone one step ahead by not offering moratorium for the month of July (as mentioned in their terms and conditions) and forcing the customer to pay the EMI and also creating an indirect loss by repeatedly producing the cheque in customers' account. EMI+Additional interest+cheque bounce charges!!! Imagine the situation of that customer.
    5. Digital option clearly did not help the people who are not savvy of online application. Banks don't reach out to them to help in such cases (staffs not available due to lockdown), but they are available for collection call harassment.
    6. Most of the middle class section is in an unimaginable situation of pain and struggle.

So, has this unexpected situation been handled in an effective way? Why cannot the opposition parties capitalize on these real issues as well? Fuel price hike is not the only issue which is impacting the common people, there are many other concerns. Definitely there are many unnoticed issues which are crippling common people. Run a campaign to get the details about other issues which are not addressed. Just a protest for fuel price hike, will not attract the attention. They need to highlight other concerns which requires immediate attention.
