Shivamogga: Bank staff make farmer walk 15 km to pay Rs 3.46

Daijiworld Media Network - Shivamogga (SP)

Shivamogga, Jun 27: Employees of Canara Bank, Nittur branch in Hosanagar taluk of the district, made a phone call to a farmer to inform him that his loan amount is yet to be cleared and asked him to visit the branch forthwith. The farmer visited the bank on Friday June 26 by walk as bus services are absent, and returned after clearing the remaining amount of Rs 3.46.

The farmer, Laxminarayana, is from Baruve village near Nittur. He had raised a farm loan of Rs 35,000 from the said bank. Rs 32,000 of the loan was waived by the government. He had cleared the balance amount of Rs 3,000 along with interest a few months back. But on Friday, he received a call from the bank, asking him to come to the bank as there was some pending loan amount. He was taken back, and rushed to Nittur immediately. As there are no buses due to lockdown and Laxminarayana does not own a vehicle, he walked for 15 km to reach the branch, and returned after remitting Rs 3.46.

The farmer, Laxminarayana Amade, said that he was hurt to know that the bank people made him walk long distances just to get Rs 3.46 cleared. Canara Bank Nittur branch manager, L Pingwa, said that the bank audit is in progress and that the farmer's signature was needed to renew his loan. He explained that the farmer paid the balance of Rs 3.46 in his account during the visit, and that his signature was obtained by the bank.

In coming days expect such kind of behaviour from nationalised bank. This Namo govt has merged many nationalised banks and killed competetion and aiding private banks. Also the selective merger of nationalised banks is clever ploy to mask the NPA mess of six years of central government's economic policies.

The present auditors are more worried about small amount & overlook by omission or commission the bigger amount due to them.
I had experienced over enthusiastic act of present auditors a few years back I received a letter notice explaining I have not paid the loan amount due from some time. When I approached the bank manager he said sorry the auditors by mistake have pointed my account as due while in reality the last installment was due & had time for the same to close the account.

Government cleared rupees 32,000/- balance 3,000/- farmer paid. Rs. 3.46 manager or any one of the employees could have paid if he/they had little sympathy/humanity towards that farmer......a small charity.... For everything there should be luck and get blessed by god... We, because of our pride kick small, small deeds to help others which in turn convert into blessing .... When we don't learn in this difficult situation then when.....?????

I agree with you Pravinanna.... They behave rudely and harshly. They are always on the laptops don't understand what that much they do ignoring/neglecting the customers for a long time. To update the pass book they loose their patience/to issue new cheque book....come another time... If you call just bang the telephone by saying something which is not clear.... like wise many other small works which they don't want to do and keep pending... Finally server problem....

It's a shame on people who is taking advantage of the poor. Many ways these so called educated idiots become useless with thier knowledge to serve the public with a purpose. Audit is not end of the world and auditors always make a note. There will be a exception and reasonableness in audit. This managers explanation is not good enough to justify.

He had raised a farm loan of Rs 35,000 from the said bank. Rs 32,000 of the loan was waived by the government. He had cleared the balance amount of Rs 3,000 along with interest a few months back.

Loan is almost settled except Rs 3.46 for whatever reason.

Now its contradicting, as branch manager said that the bank audit is in progress and that the farmer's signature was needed to renew his loan.

How can the Bank renew a Loan when its fully settled ? unless it’s a Cash Credit/Overdraft

Are the bank staff qualified to work in a bank? If money has to be tallied only when audit comes up, the branch staff qualification needs to be revisited. Shame on the branch and their staff.

Sitting in aircondition room and ordering farmers to come to the bank with whatever the way ,knowing there are no facilities for them ,and return same way back only to make them pay 3.46?Shame to the person who did this. When a signature was needed, could tell him come to give signature or send a form by post.why make them suffer dear bank employees?Would you make your Grandfather same?He could explain on phone what should be done.and the account balance etc.No, dont understand the people.Atleast avoid such misstand in future and make their life not harder.

Bank emloyees can be very rude and unhelpful. Work starts at 10 am, at 11 am tea break, 1 pm to 2 pm in some banks all together for lunch break and at 4pm closed. Nowadays added issue due to corona, they say server not working come tomorrow, or stretch your hand to reach the staff until it hurts you.
