Udupi, Jun 27: Newly installed solar energy system and renovated chemistry laboratory of Milagres College, Kallianpur, was inaugurated and blessed by Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo, bishop of Udupi diocese and president Catholic Education Society of Udupi (CESU) on Saturday June 27.

Bishop Gerald Isaac Lobo blessed the premises of the lab and said prayers in the presence of Fr Canute Noronha.

In his address, the bishop highlighted the benefits of using solar energy. "There are three advantages in solar energy: it saves money, renewable energy and is cost effective. Seven litres of water is used for producing one unit of power," he said.

He further said that the institution was practicing its teachings. "It is a model to others. We executed what we have taught to the students through this project. In this manner Milagres institution takes a step forward. The institution is trying to provide the best education in all terms. A comprehensive lab will help with educational development. May God bless both the sponsors," he said.

Quoting the words of the Pope he said, "A man should protect, preserve and promote the environment," and said that the solar panel installation was contributing towards nature.

Dr Lawrence C D'souza, correspondent, said that the solar energy installation for the institution would also reduce financial burden. Earlier, the bill would amount to about Rs 27,000 per month, but after the installation of the panel it is likely to produce excess energy and also help reduce the electricity expenses.

The entire solar panel installation project is sponsored by an alumnus Stephen Cornell, in the name of his parents the late Albert and the late Cyprian Cornelio and the cost of panel is worth Rs 15 lac. While, Bhaskar Naik, an alumnus of Millagres College, sponsored Rs 5 lac for the renovation of the chemistry lab.

Dr Lawrence welcomed the gathering and Dr Vincent Alva, principal of the Milagres College, proposed the vote of thanks. Rosalia Cardoza compered the function.

Joseph Peter Fernandes, staff secretary, Salvodara Noronha, president, alumni association, Rekha Bhat, staff coordinator and others were present.
