Mangaluru: Road caves in before Padil underpass opens for public use

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jun 10: The second railway underpass that was under construction on national highway at Padil here was set to be opened for public use shortly. However, before it happened, the road caved in and a huge pit has been formed in the middle of the road. One shudders to think what would have happened if the underpass was inaugurated and the road had opened up when vehicles were passing over it.

The work on the underpass was progressing at a snail's pace since the last two years. The work would have been completed within two days. Final touches were being given to the work, and a roller was smoothening the road surface with tar and crushed stones when the road suddenly suffered a depression and a huge pit with a depth of about three feet was created on the road. It is said that underground drainage passes under the spot and the incident was a fallout of road work conducted without taking notice of the underground drainage passing below.

After the metalling of the road was conducted a few days back, the region had experienced good rainfall. The rainwater had softened the earth under the road and due to the pressure of the roller when levelling the road, the road caved in, it is said.

The inauguration of the underpass therefore stands postponed. Now, the road would have to be dug to find the source of the problem. Thereafter, if there is underground drainage, slab would have to be fixed over it before undertaking road work all over again. In the meantime, because of monsoon, the work may be hampered.

The underpass is being constructed at a cost of Rs 5 crore on national highway 75. As the spot experiences heavy flow of rainwater, the railways had elevated the spot with the help of mud by 1.5 metres. It is said that the underpass conforms to Indian Road Congress rules and regional transport office conditions relating to width, height etc. There is facility for pedestrians at the underpass and drains have been provided for free flow of storm water.

There is confusion over who executed this work. When contacted, highway department officials said that the work was executed by the railways while the railway officials stated that national highways authority had done it.

When you have engineers who have entered into Govt service through corrupted means this is what you get "TENGA" (THUMB). In olden days our men without engineering qualification built villas or bunglows that had cross ventilations. Today with engineering qualification from reputed college and university we get such infrastructure that collapses within 10 years. This is the development we see in India. Corruption has reached its peak.

The first inaugurated underpass has 5.5 meters gap in height, when it was opened rain water drains sent flow water into it & some videos with Kambala commentary & swimming in a nearby car service center surfaced to amuse all the people.
As a lesson was learnt from the first underpass this second got raised road lessening the height to 4.5 meters to avoid that situation, now is this height too according to road congress specifications the engineers need to clarify.
All these including Pumpwell flyover having same lacunae proves our leaders & engineers have short sighted vision unlike the British who had better vision & their bridges & roads are giving better service even 100 years after their construction!

There were comments earlier that the underpass is having insufficient height and it would cause problems for vehicles with higher height. Now that the road is caving it, soon the height will increase by itself. Kya idea hai jee!!! Award should be given to the designers.

The BJP government is blaming 70 years past Congress ruling. But in Mangalore BJP is in ruling since 1992 for 28 years consequently the roads are constructed not even last one mansoon season without repairs.

The local MP distributing door to door pamphlets of BJP's achievements. Why not name this road after 'Gadhar Savarkar' so that people while travelling will remember for his trait?

The picture shows used engine oil mixed with crushed stone laid. We want to boycott China but can't we improve our standards.

Chote chote baathe hothe rahthe hai...bade bade desh mein. You will see such things in developed countries also.

To become worthwhile all to become honest and sincere in there work...and not only with modiji it wont possible. Cattle trafficking, Corruption, Smuggling, Terrorism, Fake notes, Hundi racket...if people come out of it...India definitely become a great nation. When hollow inside in all spheres it definitely things become same like this road. We know very well who teached corruption and master in it.

if you show their mistakes immidiately they will talk abut Cow, Beef , Beef Export ( *allowed)etc,
they will never accept their shortcoming, ateleast without blaming Nehru or Indira Ghandi they will not conclude their speech.
See in western countries they will never blame previous governemtn or ex-president,
They always think and talk about what we can do for our country and not what ex-XYZ did for country in the past 90 years back that is real development spirit.

What do you mean by "BJP ruling in Mnglr since 1992" where in MCC /Karnataka State/NewDelhi? Before commenting have ltl GK. After all how we can expect GK from pappu followers. Since 2004 to 2014 during that period ribbon cutter was the surface transport minister and he could not complete both pump well or padil under pass? You expect MODI to complete it in 6 years.
On one point ur right it is possible only for MODI to develop INDIA that is why ppl look at him for finishing the job

I think it is better to construct a 'SURANG' marg, like golden days. No other possibility. In future if there is any problem in the work, Administration must make representatives responsible and accountable, because without their presence and not monitoring properly, they must make them to work as labour in that particular project till it finishes.
