Panaji, May 30: The agricultural department of the state is fully geared up for any possible attack by the locusts which have already destroyed crops in northern India and parts of Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.

Giving the preparedness of the department, Nevil Alphonso, state director of agriculture said, "So far, no report of locust attack is received by us from any of the districts that are neighbouring Goa borders. However, we are well prepared to face the attack."

Alphonso also had discussions with senior officials of the agriculture department, Indian council of agricultural research (ICAR) and Integrated Pest Management Center (IPMC) to chalk out plans to counter the attack locusts and minimize the damage done to the crops.

The state farmers have already completed harvesting the rabi crop and cultivation of seasonal vegetables is also nearing the end of the season. So at least these crops are saved from the attack of locusts.

"Now, our main concern is chilli seedlings, nurseries of which are developed in parts of Valpoi, Quepem, Sanguem and Canacona. In addition, we are also monitoring the cashew and coconut plantations," said Alphonso.
