Kumaraswamy son's wedding sparks row over lockdown 'violation'

Bengaluru, Apr 17: The wedding of former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy's son Nikhil Gowda with Revathi at a farmhouse near Bidadi in Karnataka's Ramangara district on Friday sparked a row over alleged violation of lockdown norms.

Taking objection to non-observance of social distancing by the attendees who didn't wear face masks, Deputy Chief Minister C.N. Ashwath Narayan told reporters here that he had asked the district's Deputy Commissioner and Superintendent of Police to inquire into the charge that lockdown guidelines were violated.

"Permission was given for the wedding but with guidelines to maintain social distancing and wearing of face masks by all those attending the ceremony. If there is a violation, action will be taken," Narayan said.

Kumaraswamy's spokesman K.C. Sadananda, however, told IANS that the guidelines were not violated, as the ceremony was held within the house and only family members and close relatives were present on the occasion.

"As the main ceremony, tying the nuptial knots, was held in the marriage pandal, only family members were present, while relatives were seated in the farmhouse at a distance," the spokesman said.

The spokesman also clarified that the district (Ramanagara) was a green spot with not a single coronavirus case reported till date, unlike in Bengaluru which is a coronavirus hotspot with over 80 positive cases so far.

Nikhil, 28, got engaged to Revathi, 22, a grandniece of state Congress leader M. Krishnappa, in Bengaluru on February 10.

"About 100 people attended the ceremony conducted according to Hindu rites by priests in the presence of the couple's parents, other family members and relatives," said Sadananda.

The wedding was solemnised at the farm house at Kethaganahalli in Ramanagara district on Friday morning. Only close family members were present when Nikhil and Revathi exchanged vows to become man and wife. Nikhil tied the customary mangalasutra around the neck of Revathi to signify having accepted her as his life partner as per Hindu custom.

Along with Kumaraswmay, former Prime Minister H D Devegowda-Channamma couple joined in performing the 'Dhara' custom. In addition to parents of Nikhil, Kumaraswamy and Anitha Kumaraswamy, parents of Revathi, Manjunath couple and some close ones took part in the function. MLA H D Revanna-Bhavani couple and MP Prajwal Revanna were also present.

On account of lockdown, the police had extended conditional permission for conducting the marriage function. They had allowed a total of 42 vehicles to be used for the marriage function.

We could see many number of vehicles including the Government vehicles on video/TV (reporting around 48 or so cars). The reporter also showed in closeup that there were 4 to 5 people in few cars. A big battalion of police were deployed to control the inflow/outflow of vehicles. Media was kept away. The pandal size itself was big to accommodate many hundreds. Few luggage/pandal vans and workers were moving towards venue as per the videos shown on TV. Ramanagaram is a Green Zone hitherto, God bless the people of Ramanagar to continue in Green Zone. Surprising that HDK says that only family members are attending. But can he forget they are all from different places and from many other parts of Karnataka (Covid Zones). Even the bride's family is from different zone. God forbid that even one was infected, he/she would gift the entire marriage crowd with Covid-19 virus and also no wonder if the guests who attended wedding would also carry a return gift virus back home. Shocking to see a ruling party MLA celebrating his birthday in public, a temple getting 100s of people gathering for a celebration, a minister distributing food packets, an ex MLA distributing live chicken and Masala packets to public (all without maintaining social distancing, no masks, no handglouses). The concerned Sub Inspector informing media that only 35 people attended the wedding whereas the drone shows more than 75 in one screen not counting others away from spot and serving cadre. This is dangerous, forget about the action, but lets all first pray that all goes well and no one is infected since Corona does not know/identify the levels, rich, poor, VIP, VVIP, child, aged, healthy, sick. Lets wish that none having any contact with infected ones was in the crowd/function. Shocking is the way spoke person Tanveer Ahmed , defented/presented to the media about the event and taking the name of Dy CM at such a provocating tone naming it a political issue. God bless him, & India.

To the best of my limited knowledge, categorisation of districts into Red, Orange and Green will be effective only after 20th of this month. Sadananda is the doing the job of a spokesman by justifying, but that can’t be taken. Correct our knowledge or the lack of it with your valuable feedback.

On the news which was published previously I had already told that they wil not adhere to the norms... It's only bayee mathu...

I know these ppl here better... The pictures prove where none of them are wearing a mask and there is no social distancing... The politicians, MLAs and MPs should set an example to the public and not violate the law.... Many many weddings are cancelled as this is a wedding season.. m sure many have paid advances already, borrowed loans on interest... Pathetic and shameful act by the so called politicians... We public should feel prowd that even if we are middle class or poor we are still dignified and follow rules and are trying our maximum to protect each other from the spread of infection...

My father would always say that if indian administration is handed over to the army india will develop.. till then this is our fate...

God save us and protect all of us

Looks like the word lockdown is bullshitting. The word is applied only on common man and exceptions are surely made as is visible with events taking place with blatant violations. BTW congratulations to the couple.

Here people commenting with lack of knowledge

some one told i want to manyy, but who give permission, man, govt give permission to any one to get marry, with condition that total no. of people can attend is not more than 20 and social distancing
    should be follow.

Here govt / authority should not be question for giving permission, but Kummy family should be question for not following authority instruction.

    after reading below

Kumaraswamy's spokesman K.C. Sadananda also clarified that the district (Ramanagara) was a green spot with not a single coronavirus case reported till date.

I DNT UNDERSTAND WHAT THESE PEOPLE TRYING TO DO,

Lockdown rule does not apply for minsters and their family members. CM can attend wedding as happened in Karnataka. Law applies only to general public and poor not for ministers.

Birds of a feather flock together, Administration who has given the permission is equally responsible as the ex CM family..... What happened to MLA Jayaram's birthday bash, we all have seen just few days back, with his supporters being booked.... Probably they will book the Event Manager in the case :) :) :)

I am really surprised to see no one has worn mask there and no distancing too! Corona doesn't come near rich people? Why some guidelines and rules for ordinary person? Wear mask, wash hands frequently and keep distancing...if go out on urgent work also, police are instructed to take strict actions on the people even if they keep moving... and what is this here, they are gathered at one place in large numbers. Corona will run away looking at the riches??

The punishment for the lockdown violators should be implemented to work at Corona dedicated hospitals for floor cleaning and other jobs. Then they will understand how hard it is to work at hospitals during this crisis. Medical workers are at highest risk if the cases rise.
