Bhatkal, Apr 6: Coronavirus has terrorized the people to such an extent that everyone is fearing for their own life. At the same time, thousands of doctors and medical staff have risked their lives to protect the people infected by coronavirus. Lives of doctors are at risk, and many have lost their lives due to this infection.

Media reports claim that doctors do not get enough support by way of proper equipment and medical supplies to fight coronavirus. Medical staff working in rural areas do not even get masks to protect themselves. Some organizations and women have been making masks at their homes for use by the medical staff. But to fight against coronavirus, shields too are needed. These are not available with the government and they are not easily available in the market. Therefore, students of Makers Hub at Madina Colony here have been readying face shields which will help medical staff and the police to shield themselves from coronavirus infection.

Member of the unit, Suhail Damodi, explained that masks extend protection to only nose and mouth but not eyes. He said that the face shields being made by them cover the entire face and hence stop infection to eyes, and hence are very much helpful to the police.

The members of Makers Hub have been making these shields with hand and initially it is planned to make a hundred shields. He said that COIVID-19 medical nodal officer Dr Sharad Nayak, has given them permission. "We plan to bring machine to make these shields, and with the help of machine, over 500 shields can be made in a day," he said.

'Makers Hub' is a concept which was started by engineering students and some other interested students in 2017. The hub also helps engineering and polytechnic students to make projects, guiding them, organizing workshops to create interest among the youngsters towards technology. Makers Hub plans to provide encouragement to amateurs or those engaged in tinkering by introducing technology, creating awareness among the youth about the current trend of technology finding solutions by using technology, etc.

This eye shield should be used in addition to face mask. This is not a substitute for face mask.
