Migrant workers complain of being served rotten food by MCC

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (ANK)

Mangaluru, Apr 2: Following lockdown enforced across the state and nation, the government made arrangements for stranded workers and homeless. Similarly, the district administration here, took to shift as many as 320 underprivileged people to a hostel near Nanthoor. However, the people at the hostel complained that Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) supplied them rotten food to eat.

One of the residents at the hostel, a migrant coolie worker identified as Manjunath said, "We are being given the same food in the morning, evening and night. The food that was served for dinner was completely rotten."

Manjunath also lamented that they were given undercooked rice which could likely cause health issues. "Nearly 300 food packets were wasted because the content was rotten. Now we are in a situation where cannot go back to our homes. Earlier, we used to earn around different places for our daily bread. Now we are forbidden to go outside because we may die of coronavirus. But being inside here, we will surely die because of stale food.

"We have approached the officials with our grievances. However, no one is paying any heed to our problems. Last night, over 320 of us did not have dinner because what we were given was nothing but rotten food. We do not have any problem with staying here but the food that is supplied to us is spoiled. We are unhappy as we are being given the same food three times a day. The packed rotten food is placed near the hostel gate and it is, unfortunately, all a waste," he said.

Before distributing the Packets, every time our administration authorities must random sample every time. Our MCC officials also taste the food before distributing. All problems will solve.

When someone is volunteering and giving you food, be grateful and accept it. Sometimes the food may get stale. But it is better than starving. Bring it to the notice of concerned persons, but dont make hue and cry about it by publishing in media.
Sometimes, the leftover food from wedding parties is given to aashrams instead of wasting it. The intention is good. Food may get stale. Instead of grumbling, just receive it and if not usable, throw it. But dont discourage any good act.

In very hot & humid conditions, food gets stale very fast! Any delay in supply, due to the huge no of packets to be distributed w/o refrigeration, there's always a chance of it getting stale, but that does not mean it's inedible; things are going to to turn worse if the situation does not improve; pure drinking water will be the next issue as we reach the peak of summer!

Rudolf Rodrigues, show your money and status strength to people above you or equal to your status, not on poor people who has to think for food and what next every hour daily.

Please do not presume & assume; under the given circumstances where even govt is scouring for help, somebody serving free food for 2000 mouths is a great thing! Remember there is a lot of difference between "rotten & stale"!

Somewhere the supervisor & distributor of this free food is claiming it's not possible, else the other 1700 too would have complained!

If the lockdown continues for another month the situation will turn for the worse, which they should understand!

I am also a member of the team who are packing this food on a daily basis and a member of Association of consulting civil Engineers, Mangalore centre who are volunteering this job of packing the food so that the poorest of poor dont starve.

Indira canteen is packing approximately 3000 packets of food daily for MCC and are daily Packing freshly cooked food and are packed in hot state.

It might be very wrong of the migrant to say that MCC has provided stale food for two reasons

    1) Since we are part of the Team packing it, we are sure that the food are freshly made.
2)Wonder why the other 2700 nos of reciepents have no complaints.

Am shocked by the statement made by Migrant worker.

Stop serving them free food. Then they will realise the worth. Are they expecting them to be served a lavish spread. This is the time to eat anything that is offered as long its not stale.

Problem is not with food. These migrants generally don't eat rice. Their main food is chapatiis made by wheat. I think govt should think about making chapatiis in large scale. Like use machines to make and seal pack.

this is not the time to decide who eats Chapathi and who eats rice. This is an emergency and MCC is doing the best. they are providing food 3 times a day, what more do they expect. At this point everyone is expected to adjust and not throw tantrums . Once the pandemic is under control you can cook and eat whatever you wish to. MCC wont stop.
