Mangaluru: Rain in coast brings down temperature, creates problems for farmers

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Feb 28: Almost the entire Karnataka coast was enveloped in clouds since Thursday, February 27 morning and a few places in the coast experienced unexpected rains. The rains cooled the temperature, which was unbearable since the last some days.

Because of the low-pressure area created over the Arabian Sea and surface wind in the ocean, places like Puttur, Sullia, Kanyadi, Uppinangady, Alankaru, Vittal, Bantwal, Kotekar and Koila in Dakshina Kannada district and Uppala, Bayar, Badiadka, Yedaneeru and others in Kasargod district got good rainfall.

The sudden rain created problems for areca farmers who had laid out areca nuts for drying in their courtyards. As water suddenly gushed through canals, some bunds created for irrigation purpose were breached and water stored there flowed away.

In Kundapur taluk, villages like Amasebail, Siddapur, Hallihole, Shankarnarayana and Ampar, Andaru, Kervashe, Shirlalu and Hebri in Karkala taluk got some amount of rain.

It is normal to experience some pre-monsoon rainfall by March-end but because of sudden spurt in temperature, the winds were formed beforehand and the rain was experienced with the wind, meteorological experts said. Vittal, Kanyana and Mudnoor recorded rainfall of 36 mm, 34 mm and 33 mm respectively.

With the rains, the temperature which hovered around 38 degree Celsius at Panambur came down to 34.6 on Thursday. As per predictions, the coastal region and a few places in southern hinterlands may get some rainfall during the next two days.

Mangalore is all dry and burning in heat.. IMD came to know of the rain in some places only after washed away the areca nuts and coconuts put for drying.. After their report now IMD woke up and is saying pressure in the sea ...if they would have predicted in advance poor villagers would have gathered their hard work on time...
