Mangaluru, Feb 16: People who commute on city buses to Talapady are forced to walk for a kilometre ever since FASTag came into effect, with Bus Owners' Association and Navayug company, responsible for collecting toll fees near Talapady toll gate, having failed to come to consensus over the fee.

On Sunday February 16, the bus commuters, and Bus Owners' Association members staged a protest in front of Talapady toll gate demanding Navayug to hold talks and figure a solution to the problem.

The issue started after FASTag was mandated near toll gates. The bus owners were informed that they had to pay toll and were asked to deposit Rs 15,000 for each bus, and a total of Rs 18 lac for 30 buses per annum as toll fee.

However, the Bus Owners Association expressed they were only able to pay Rs 4,100 for each bus. "Payment of excess toll fee will become a burden for the people who will commute," the bus owners said, adding that they would be forced to increase the ticket prices by Rs 3 and this would affect the poor.

A discussion was held at Ullal police station but the Bus Owners' Association and Navayug Company failed to come to any agreement.

After FASTag was implemented, there has been only one toll gate entry that allows cash payment. This has led to a long queue and badly affected the bus timings.

The bus owners are demanding that Navayug hold talks and comes to an agreement on toll fees and also open more toll gate entries allowing cash payment. However, as the authorities are evading the meeting, the buses have stopped crossing the toll gate, and drop the passengers near the toll gate before turning back. This has put the commuters in great inconvenience. People with children, senior citizens, people with disabilities, vendors with goods are struggling to walk. They are forced to cross the toll gate on foot and find commute on the other side of the toll gate.

The protest on Sunday was not fruitful as no official from Navayug attended. Ullal police were also called.

Gadinadu Rakshana Vedike president Siddque Talapaddy has asked the officials to come to a decision in the next two days. If passengers are put into inconvenience again, a massive protest will be held near the toll gate, he warned.

Bus Owners Association president Karim Nagathota, convener Satish Kudru, taluk panchayat president Sidiqque Kolangere among others were present.

This concept of collecting Toll for certain sections of the roads very often esp in long runs like M,lore-Mumbai/B,lore is becoming increasingly irritating, time consuming as well as shatters the peace of mind of common citizens regarding the very concept itself. It is the duty of the a Govt to provide certain basics to the common man like Defence, ExtAff, Railways, and of course most Imp...Sadak,Bijli&Pani. Govt started neglecting roads in order to fund its popular social programs like free El, free saree/dhoti,TaaliBhagyaScheme, Jyoti schemes, free meals, free pregnancy delivery and other Hosp schemes, and not to forget the holy cow of Reservations, a heavy millstone which we will have to bear for a long, long time as well as is own wages & salaries. Even the road tax that should have been used only for the roads are being diverted elsewhere. After the roads turn down due to Govt neglect, they ain't someone to build a certain section of three road and ah him to put up ack post to collect money ostensibly to find the expenses, but usually as a means of permanent income for the lucky fellow. It is not for nothing that Raj Thackeray took his goons and ransacked the toll booths near Mumbai, because (did u know)The 1st Toll powered bridge had collected to for the Panvel bridge more than 8 /18 times (not sure exactly) when they were supposed to stop collecting after the costs are recovered. This is the basic argument. Who goes into details as to who was supposed to build&maintain the roads properly? Who is the person who is appointed as the toll man? How much did he pay2build the bridge?Who works our the applicable rates for the vehicles. This is very imp as the roads/H,ways are very substandard compared to elsewhere. Why are there so many holes in the roads? Why are so many wide gaps in every flyover section (apart from the noise & nuisance it also compromises the integrity of the structures) all of which are appear very wonky and untrustworthy. WhyVshould suffer4allThis?

Bus owners, on road or off road, behaves las if they are above law of the land. As per terms of permit, once the trip is started, they are bound to reach destination and cannot terminate the trip Midway. RTO should step in and cancel the permits of this rogues....!

Like property Tax system, collect Toll Tax from vehicles owners at RTO,or MANGALORE ONE office for each year. If they pass Toll or not is different question. Like if one stay in house or not ,they must pay house Tax . Traffic congestion at Toll gate will solve.

Road tax is normal. But toll tax will be after giving more facilities on the road for smooth journeys, like Flyover, wide bridges and all. This the extra benefits we have to pay toll. When one is enjoying, then I think no harm in paying Toll.

Buses should be exempted from paying Toll, as the bus owners are not rich but have big loan. Their profit is meager. Their daily collection is laughable as they need to pay for the driver and the conductor. What remains to the owner is only peanuts.

No Bus Owners are Poor. They subcontracting the Buses to Driver/Conductor and get the fixed money daily. one year back started with one bus now he owned three to four buses. This is Poor Bus Owners contribution.
