Mangaluru: Speeding car falls off from Pumpwell flyover, two seriously injured

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Feb 8: Two people were seriously injured after a speeding car overturned and fell on another car next to the flyover on the newly-inaugurated Pumpwell flyover, on Saturday, February 8.

A Maruti Alto and a Renault Duster were involved in the accident which took place front of Indiana Hospital. The driver of the speeding Alto lost control over the car, jumped over the divider and rammed into an oncoming Duster car which was being driven below the flyover.  The impact of the crash was so high that the engine of the Alto was found 100 metres away from the spot of the deadly collision.

The Alto was going towards Kasragod from Udupi.

The injured, who are said to be serious, were rushed to the hospital. Others who suffered minor injuries were also shifted to a nearby hospital. Meanwhile, the accident created a huge traffic block. Mangaluru south traffic police rushed to the spot.

The Pumpwell flyover was inaugurated on January 31, after a decade long wait.

This itself proves the substandard road construction and poor engineering.

Though I am proud Mangalorian, sometimes I feel disgusted seeing how some people drive on roads . The highway speed limit is 80km/hr and I see some stupid people honking when I drive at max speed limits ( Although I know that my car is much capable of speeding better than those cheap cars behind ). Education alone can’t change such idiots. We need better monitoring systems . Every car should be fitted with GPS device and real time speed tracking. The system would not even cost 10,000/- per car. This can only happen when we stop voting based on our religious emotions and chose educated candidates . Anyways it requires ages to get communal stupidity out of our heads.

Rest in peace Praveen. I suggest the following; . Increase the height of the divider 5 feet. Also put humps to reduce the speed and the speed limit on the flyover should be 20kms/hour.

    For your comments:
Also put humps to reduce the speed and the speed limit on the flyover should be 20kms/hour.
Gentleman big salute to you better get down from car & push that will be better option instead of your 20kms/hour speed suggestion as well as humps to reduce speed ( Normally in highways avoiding humps, if humps it should be properly sign-barrier)
I am not supporting overspeed drive, but the consequence hidden in this tragedy due to hump & overspeed driver lost control, normally smaller cars rear portion is less grip compare to bigger cars.
Due to tragedy we lost our experienced car technician as well as owner of Swagath garage.

I see a lot of comments abusing the flyover rather than the alto driver's fault. I was an eyewitness of this accident (Ready to give statement to traffic police if required). I was about 50 meters behind this alto and could see that he was way beyond speed limits. At that speed, he tried to cut through 2 bikes in front of him causing to lose control and hitting the median. According to the news here, it says the duster was travelling in the service road, but it was coming in the opposite lane. This alto landed right on top of the bonnet and windshield of the Duster. Then the alto jumped over the flyover and landed on the service road. This is what had happened. People blaming the flyover can continue doing that, but its not the flyover that caused at lease this accident. Though I agree that there's some fine tuning needs to be done to the flyover, blindly blaming it for the cause of the accident by assumption is not ideal. Saddest part is the duster driver had to suffer for no fault of his, it would have been me, you or your family in that opposite lane. My heartfelt condolence to the grieving family.

disgusting to see many comments on flyover... please do some research before doing non sense comments. Innocent person killed in the accident because a 17 year old reckless driving lost control and come on other side of divider and hit and killed other vehicle driver. Now the details of other driver etc are no published because we are so called super secular country who failed to acknowledge real truth and paint some other issue ... bad roads.. bad construction etc. are we responsible citizens to guide children.. insist of taking license. guide children to behave. Go near tokuttu and near by areas and see reckless bikes going around... driven by young kids... thats the real issue. They are no afraid of law, police... and ready to kill people by their reckless driving..

First of all close the Flyover till it totally finished the work. From the day one , more than ten years, one or other problems. I advise to demolish the Flyover and give the tender to any reputed company. Now atleast if they don't demolish, than construct retaining wall on both side. Otherwise it we'll be another place like Ullal bridge. Think twice.

4 students and were drunk in that alto, the drunk driver was over speeding, clearly her fault.. And then she kills this hard working man. She made his wife a widow.. And his two little children grow up without a father.
I just hope these people who were driving drunk and rash feel complete wrath of the law.
Please get a lawyer as soon and possible , and give his wife and Childern justice.
Book the driver(she was a girl apparently) under IPC 279. I think you can at least jail her for 6 years with heavy fine.
But with a good lawyer you can trial that girl under culpable homicide 304a , she will get 10 year jail term, and pay heavy fine( you can file for 4 crore fine, based on Mr praveens monthly income, and... In the end get some sort of justice)

May his soul rest in piece

Very very sad... Yes Praveen sir is really a genuine person... Mangalore lost a wonderful personality... His garage just stands by the roadside with full of vehicles day and night... Why these children enjoy that much with the help of parents money? Why parents can't control their children by offering little money which cater for their daIly needs. Car, luxuries let these people get once they start working. Gone is gone... No amount of money can bring him back and reunite with his family 😥😥😥....still unable to believe..

It's not drivers fault, there is a HUGE bump in the middle of the flyover without the warning sign. Pretty sure he lost control due to that bump.
You don't put a bump in the middle of the flyover like the road...what's the point of having a flyover then. Cruising at 60 km/he is no big deal...
Catch hold of the contractor, as to why he did not put the bump signage.

No. This particular accident IS driver's fault since I saw the accident with my eyes. Wish I had a Dashcam. Though I agree that the flyover has minor issues (such as a dip at the end of one side and a hump like part in the middle of the other), this particular incident is purely because of the over-speed and sudden swerve by the alto guy. I was right behind the alto about 50 meters and I could see that he was travelling way beyond speed limits (more than 100kmph). He then swerved suddenly through 2 bikers in front of his, losing control. After this swerve, he moved to the left of the road and then to the right hitting median and then hit the duster on the opposite side. I am really sad for the duster driver since he had to suffer for the alto driver's fault. I am certain that even if the alto driver did the same thing after the flyover, he would have caused the same accident killing someone else. I was in utter shock after seeing this and could not drive normally after that. It's really sad that people have to suffer for no fault of theirs and by some moron driver over-speeding and causing accident.

No. Both the cars are of KA19 registration. The accident happened right infront of my eyes. I was about 50 meters behind the alto travelling from Mangalore to Kasaragod. Even i thought the alto might be a KL14 one initially. Alto was speeding and tried cutting through 2 bikes in front of it, which caused it to lose control. It was swerved to left and then right hitting the median and jumped over it and hit the duster in the opposite lane. Then it jumped over the flyover to the road beneath. The alto was speeding way beyond its limits and a sudden swerve caused this mishap. I was in shock after witnessing this accident and was unable to drive normally.
