Mangaluru: Waste to energy - Possibility of dumping yard turning into tourist spot

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jan 8: Can the stinking dumping ground at Pachchanady turn into a lush green piece of odourless land accompanied by a playground and park? A project report prepared by Abellon Clean Energy says yes.

The said company based in Gujarat has shown interest in setting up modern waste processing unit here. Experts from the company who had visited Pachchanady have already submitted detailed project report to the city corporation. The report in turn, has been forwarded by the city corporation to the state government with a proposal to accept the same. The project may get the government nod shortly.

Abellon has been setting up waste processing units backed by modern technology in Jamnagar, Rajkot, Ahmedabad, Vadpodara etc in Gujarat.

The proposed plant plans to dispose 700 tonnes of waste everyday through power generation and manure production. It has sought 15 acres of land on 25 years lease. In the initial two years, the corporation has to bear the cost of waste processing. Thereafter, Abellon will process waste free of cost by selling power so generated to Mescom.

The proposed plant will have glasses all around. Trucks carrying waste directly enter the unit and unload the waste. The process of segregation of plastic, power generation etc can be viewed from outside. Effluents too get treated there and used to feed plants. The company proposes to setup a stadium and park near the plant and turn it into a tourist spot.

Now, the city produces around 350 tonnes of waste every day and only a small portion of that is being processed. As such, the yard now has a huge stock of about a million tonnes of waste. The waste processing contract was given to a company from Delhi and that contract period has expired.

MLA Vedavyas Kamath, said that the said company has submitted project report. The city needs modern waste processing unit, he agreed. The government will get opinion from experts and take a decision, he added.

This is a very good initiation by the government to start a project to convert this waste into energy. This is a resource which can be chemically and biologically treated in different ways to generate heat for industrial processes, electricity and also bio oil and fertilizers for plants. This would greatly reduce the soil and ground-water pollution caused around the nearby areas due to seepage of the chemicals from waste and reduce the air pollution caused and emissions released from the burning of solid dry waste by people who live in comparatively remote areas where waste collection is not yet implemented . Also, such openly dumped waste produces a lot of methane gas which goes into waste but with this project can be recovered and put into good use.
As the world moves into the green sector, it is the right time that Mangalore also puts its first step into the green sector. This would also create many jobs around mangalore and overall increase the health of the people and we would definitely see a decrease in the diseases causes due to the landfill dumping with humans and as well as with Animals. The waste collection, handling and disposal/recovery in and around mangalore is not as good yet and collection does not exist in some parts of mangalore yet. It can be improved a lot with different methods of collection and also primarily generating awareness among people about the harmful effects of such an open dumping site as well as the benefits of converting this waste into energy for the benefits of people.
Segregation of waste in every household is the first step to the success of such a project.

Setting up a hospital in this area would not be the wise decision because of the emissions and the presence of polluted ground-water and soil caused due to all these years of waste being dumped on this land.

Unfortunately ,Pumpwell flyover is our gold standard now to assess all govt backed projects..

The benchmark set by Nalin is quite high for others to follow(thanks to him)

As the saying goes, Wherever there is a Nalin, there is an incomplete Flyover..

In my opinion, the present dumping yard should be shieft to shakti Nagar or somewhere away from highway. And present place they must clean and construct beautiful International Cricket stadium and it will be near to Pilikula and Golf club, which is a tourist place. Lot of place is also available that side for club house and Parking.

You have a good suggestion Mr.G R Prabhuji. If at all shifting should be done then it should be at a place which is ideal based on the distances which the trucks have to travel to collect the waste from which would save the company a lot of logistical costs. Also shifting millions of tons of waste from a location to another place at this place is not the ideal solution. Instead a waste to energy plant at the current location is the best solution.

Of course good proposal. But tis should be not in paper only. It should be practical and project be completed early unlike Pumpwell Flyover Project.

The problem with such projects, being capital intensive, the municipal corporations do not pay them on time and the projects fail miserably! One of the first such cos to enter India was Paques BV of Netherlands in collaboration with Western India group of Pune in 1987, which crumbled due to financial issues! Just see our own Antony Waste management, how it's surviving!!

    Dear Ronald,

Other companies already given a chance. But situation not changed. This year it saw a great havoc during heavy rain. What is the problem if another company try their hand ?

I urge the authorities and social reformers to pay a personal visit to the company's similar running project first. Regarding the Park - already a good Park (Pilikula) is running nearby and this one in short distance may not be profitable. (If it is really a successful one, Better to shift the processing near to Pilikula so that the existing park can be made use of instead of building a new one).

Just for the sake of opposing we should not oppose.

It is fine if it is just a tree park with full of greenery. I don't like Pilikula to be turned into a busy traffic area of waste carrying trucks.
