Mangaluru, Jan 6: Under the smart city project, preparations are on to install high quality CCTV cameras in 15 strategic junctions in the city. These cameras will facilitate the concerned to keep tab on the day-to-day developments.

Under the first phase of the plan, these CCTV cameras, which are proposed to help the police to get leading clues into murders, robberies and other crimes happening in the city, 15 such smart poles will come up. A total of 75 cameras will be installed in these junctions. Every junction will have a smart pole in which five cameras will be working round the clock. One of them will be a camera that will move 360 degrees.

A control room has been setup in the city corporation building at Lalbagh to manage these cameras. Smart poles will come up at these junctions within a few days, officials have claimed.

At present, more than 2,000 CCTV cameras have been functioning in the city including the one in multi-storied buildings, banks and commercial buildings. Additionally, 210 cameras had been installed recently. In the coming days, their number will increase. As per Karnataka State Public Safety Act, all the commercial buildings, bus stands, educational institutions, multi-storied buildings, residential complexes and offices need to have CCTV cameras. The state government has made it mandatory for government and public entities where people gather, to have CCTV cameras.

City police commissioner, Dr P S Harsha said that additional CCTV cameras are being installed in major junctions to keep close vigil over developments in the city and that action will be taken against those who fail to follow public safety rules.
