Udupi: Eligible homeless people to get 1,000 flats built in three phases – MLA Raghupati Bhat

Udupi, Jan 4: As many as 1,000 eligible people, who fall under the houseless/landless SC/ST, minority and general categories will be given apartments, which will be built on 8.22 acres of land in Herga village in Saralebettu.

Addressing a press meet at Town Hall in Ajjarkad on Saturday, January 4, Udupi MLA K Raghupati Bhat said that the project is undertaken by Karnataka Slum Development Board and City Municipality Council. The foundation laying ceremony of the first phase of the layout will be held on Wednesday, January 8 at Herga- Babbuswamy layout.

The ground plus 3 floor building will have 24 apartments in each block. Around 460 beneficiaries will benefit in the first phase. The project will get completed in one and a half years.

The MLA further said that around 260 flats will be built in second phase and the remaining flats will be built in third phase in Herga village and Puttur village on 1.75 acres of land. Each flat consists of hall, bedroom, kitchen, bath, WC and balcony and the total available carpet area is 320 sq.ft. The total cost of each flat is Rs 7,42,994.

“The beneficiary has to be a resident of Udupi. This apartment cannot be sold for 15 years. Several other lands have been identified in Sannakkibettu, Subrahmanyanagar. This is my dream project and I intend to provide houses for the needy people,” he said.

“The government has sanctioned funds and I have ensured that there is no shortage of funds to complete the construction work. V Somanna, minister for Housing, Horticulture and Silk, R Ashok, revenue minister and Kota Srinivas Poojary, minister for Port and Inland Water Transport will be present in the ceremony," he informed.

“We have studied Dobhi Ghat flat models. We are trying to implement the same here which will be cost effective. We have also planned an Anganawadi near the apartment and also a beautiful garden. The sources of the finance for this project are Central government, State government, Beneficiaries, CMC (10% of project cost) and Bank Loan.”

“Central government will give Rs 1.5 lac for SC/ST and Rs 1.5 lac for general category. State government will provide Rs 2 lac for SC/ST and 1.2 lac for general category. SC/ST beneficiaries should give Rs 60,000 and general category beneficiaries should give Rs 90,000. CMC will give Rs 74, 299 each. The Bank will provide Rs 2,58,695 to SC/ST and Rs 3,08,695 to general (OBC, minority),” he said.

He added that a tie-up has been discussed with Bank of Baroda and a MoU will be signed soon. Those who have labour cards will get interest-free loan. The loan can be repaid over a period of 30 years. Loan will be provided on 8.25% interest, he said.

Anand C Kallolikar, CMC commissioner, Pradeep Kurdekar, tahsildar Udupi, Mohanraj, CMC engineer, Raju, Brahmavar tahsildar and others were present.
