Mangaluru, Dec 31: Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has planned to install plastic reuse machines in five bus stands within a month from now. Under this nature-friendly initiative of the corporation, these machines will crush plastic bottles and prepare them for reuse.

Thousands of empty water bottles get accumulated in the government bus stands on a daily basis. One such machine is functional at Majestic bus stand Bengaluru, and this experiment has become successful. Buoyed by this success, the corporation has planned to install five such machines costing Rs 4.3 lac each, in five bus stands including Mangaluru. By January 15, these machines will become operational in Hassan, Shivamogga, Davanagere, Mangaluru and Mysuru bus stands. This plan is undertaken as part of corporate social responsibility initiatives of Green Cyclo Plast and Sparsh Masala. The corporation would be providing free space and electricity for these machines.

KSRTC has already stopped issuing water bottles to passengers in its luxury buses which used up 1.2 crore plastic bottles every year. It also plans to hold environment fair once in three months in major bus stands in association with organizations involved with efficient management of wet and dry waste. It also plans to extend sanitary napkin incinerators and napkin vending machines to several bus sands soon.
