Citizenship Amendment Bill becomes Act after President Ram Nath Kovind’s nod

Daijiworld Media Network - New Delhi (SHP)

New Delhi, Dec 13: President Ram Nath Kovind on Thursday, December 13, gave his assent to the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2019, turning it into an Act. The contentious law promises citizenship to migrants from three neighbouring countries excluding the ones who are Muslims.

According to the Act, members of Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi and Christian communities who have come from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan till December 31, 2014, and facing religious persecution will no longer be treated as illegal immigrants.

Following uproar in both the upper and the lower houses of parliament, through a majority, the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill was passed.

However, the bill has caused major tension in Assam where protesters clashed with the police on Thursday. The police also resorted to open fire where at least two people lost their lives. The north-eastern state also witnessed internet shutdown starting from 7 PM on December 11. According to a state government notification, this step was taken supposedly to prevent misuse of internet platforms and social media to disturb the peace and order in Assam. Meanwhile, the protesters in Assam, which shares a border with Bangladesh, say the measure would open the region to a flood of foreign migrants.

Responding to the tense situations, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a tweet, “I want to assure my brothers and sisters of Assam that they have nothing to worry after the passing of #CAB. I want to assure them- no one can take away your rights, unique identity and beautiful culture. It will continue to flourish and grow.”

Opposition parties, however, said the bigger problem with the new law was that it undermined India's secular constitution by not offering protection to Muslims.

The government has said the new law will be followed by a National Register of Citizens that means Muslims must prove they were original residents of India and not refugees from these three countries. Members of other faiths listed in the law, by contrast, have a clear path to citizenship.

Signing by president is purely a redundant process, does not add any value.
At the end does he have any say? Simply sign below the dotted line.
There is a huge expense to tax payer for maintenance president's position.

We hope the Supreme Court will strike it down as the bill is highly discriminatory and doesn't stand the scrutiny of the constitutional provisions.

If Muslims from Pakistan , Bangladesh And Afghanistan want to come and live in India then why these nations were created in the first place ?

    To put pickle ??

Pakistan specifically was made only for Muslims now because their economy is going down the drain they consider India as a greener pasture..

all minority's should leave these countries because such countries will never prosper unless they have petrol .

if their target is to send back illegal residents is appreciated as every country does it but if their moto to bring this law is to take off Muslims from the country is foolishness and nothing. No need what history says, in our own family history our people helped and loved each other in many cases and stayed as good friends till 2002. Which ruler what did in the history we have no clue but only book says. Ravana made problems to lord rama so why cant people go and fight with Srilankans..

who will stay forever in the world, a educated person should think about it but uneducated and criminal background holder only can do divide and rule!

These people are tearing India apart in the name of religion .
Is it not unfair to exclude muslims , from this ? We have represented these people . When finally Ram mandir got settled , they started a new complete new War here .

The need of the hour is not Citizenship bill , it is to take India out from being called as the 'Rape Capital' in the world, of strengthening the economy which is slowly collapsing , to make law more strict towards rape , murders , corruption .

How can a President sign a bill over midnight and be a mute spectator in Unrao rape case . Was this really required , they really want to take this religion to next elections as well !

Why are you getting touchy when no citizen of India will be left out irrespective of religion. With regards to non citizens a differential is needed given the way the religious minorities are persecuted. CAn you now pray that countries like Pakisthan , Afghanisthan and Bangladesh move away from religious Laws and enact a secular Law. If these countries do this, there was no requirement for CAB.
