Mangaluru: Kadri Gopalnath's birthday celebrated with Sangeetha Sourabha

Mangaluru Dec 6: As part of the birth anniversary of Padma Shri late Dr Kadri Gopalnath, a musical event 'Kadri Sangeetha Sourabha 2019' celebrating the legend was held at Town Hall on Friday, December 6.

Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari Dr D Veerendra Heggade inaugurated and blessed the event.

In his inaugural address, Dr Heggade said,"Kadri Gopalnath is still alive because of his achievements. Today it is a mixed emotion. He is being remembered through a programme and a concert of Carnatic music by his mentor Dr T V Gopalakrishnan. Kadri Gopalnath’s achievements are in records. It makes one feel his presence. Even after 1000 years, we can hear his music,”

“We should see him as an idol, inspiration. Indian music is in trouble because western music is taking over. Kadri Gopalnath revived the Indian music which was diminishing,” he said.

Chairman of Alva’s Foundation, Dr Mohan Alva said,"Kadri Gopalnath is known for his discipline, his music and his bonding with others. He had led by example. He was one of the renowned artistes recognized globally. Saxophone is not Indian instrument but he introduced it to Indian culture. His performance at NITK will always be remembered.”

Mangaluru South MLA Vedavyas Kamath said, "We are indeed proud of Kadri Gopalnath’s achievements. He has taken the name of Kadri to the universe. We are thinking of getting a new auditorium and a road named after him.”

Professor from Trinity College of Music, London, Candida Connoly said," Kadri Gopalnath was a great inspiration who changed my life. He toured UK in the year 1988, where he created amazing sound with his saxophone which I had never heard before. He created new sound, new composition, new improvisation and he opened the gate for Carnatic music. I am lucky enough to be part of more than hundred workshops along with him, which also helped me in my research works.”

The formal function was followed by special Carnatic recital by Padmabhushana Dr T V Gopalakrishnan who was accompanied by G Ramanathan in saxophone, B Natesan in mridangam, Rajendra Nakod in tabla and Bhimachar Rajashekar in morsing.

Mentor of late Kadri Gopalnath, Dr T V Gopalakrishnan, MCC commissioner Mohammed Nazeer and Guru Gomathi Das were present among others.

Nithyanand Rao welcomed the gathering.
