Mangaluru airport severely hit as Kannur is fliers’ new destination

Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (ANK)

Mangaluru, Oct 9: A year ago, Kannur International Airport (KIA) started its operations. While the new airport witnessed a drastic growth in passenger movement, Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) was severely hit.

Before Kannur Airport started functioning, passengers from Madikeri, Kerala travelled from their respective places to Mangaluru International Airport. But now, the footfall from Madikeri, Kerala and even Mangaluru is diverted to KIA.

One of the main reasons the locals prefer KIA is the flight fares. Most of the flights from Kannur to Gulf countries are cheaper when compared to Mangaluru. Sometimes, the fare difference comes up to Rs 10,000.

Daily flights which are scheduled at time that is convenient for passengers is another reason people prefer Kannur airport over Mangaluru.

Speaking to daijiworld.com, member of Kuwait Kerala Muslim Association (Karnataka branch) Mabiya Kadaba who hails from Derlakatte said that earlier the flight timings to Kuwait from Mangaluru were convenient. However, now the timings are not flexible.

“People, who travel to Kuwait from Mangaluru, prefer Thursdays. This is because Friday is a holiday in GCC countries. The earlier Mangaluru-Kuwait flight was preferred as people reached Kuwait on Friday morning, giving them sufficient rest before they join back work. However, now flight timings from Kannur International Airport are flexible and the fares are comparatively cheaper than Mangaluru,” he said.

Mabiya said that a memorandum was submitted twice to Dakshina Kannada MP to make changes in flight timings at Mangaluru Airport. Yet, no action was taken. “Now the airport in Mangaluru is of no use and flights are not scheduled as per the convenience of passengers. Hence, it’s natural that passengers prefer Kannur airport over Mangaluru,” he adds.

Mabiya also highlights that the cost of travelling from Kannur is almost half when compared to travelling from Mangaluru. The ticket that costs 120 dinars from Mangaluru to Kuwait is 60 dinars from Kannur airport.

Kannur airport, spread over 2,300 acres, is built at a cost of Rs 2,293 crore. The airport has a runway suitable for Code E aircraft like the Boeing B 777 and Airbus A 300. It will be extended later for the operation of Code F aircraft, like Airbus A 380. The integrated 95,000 sq mtrs terminal building, the eighth largest in India, has been built with state-of-the-art facilities.

    this was always expected.

    1. Mangalore being one of the most dangerous airports in the country, with a table-top runway
    2. Kannur has a gleaming state-of-the-art airport and associated facilities, when compared with the old, sub-par facility in Mangalore
    3. Reaching the city from Mangalore airport is a pain. While Kannur also has a lot to do in this regard, it is already better than Mangalore within 1 year of operations
    4. Ticket prices from Kannur are lesser than that from Mangalore on any given day
    5. Also, most of the international users of Mangalore airport also were from North Kerala. They just shifted to a better, closer airport naturally.

Economics will eventually drive the viability of Mangalore airport. If viability to fly to Gulf is low because of the scalability of runway or the terrain, so be it. Mangalore airport will better serve if airlines consider serving flights to Singapore, Colombo and other high value destinations. Bangalore airport is expanding. But roads leading to this airport will soon be clogged. Our history of poor planning is unparalleled. Bangalore airport is ferrying a million passengers from the airport today. But BBMP cannot ferry same number to the airport. This will soon be the sad reality.

MPs and MLAs probably have a say to an extent. Eventually it is the economics that will prevail.

Many have expressed their own views, opinions and experiences in this column. However an airport is required in order to improve our trade. Without ports whether it is sea or airport, ports are backbone of economy of the region. Although Mangalore airport authorities are boasting for their achievements, developments and revenue generated, many people have their own grievances of their own but they have to control because there was no other options.
According to my opinion, had the concerned authorities applied their mind in improving and constructing Padubidri AirPort, which was surveyed for the purpose, airport authorities would not have incurred this much of money (loss) what they have spent for Bajpe AirPort. Because in Padubidri,it is a vast, big maidan (Place) covering several acres. There was no need of soil filling, cutting trees, digging hills etc. Even required runway can be built without wasting too much money. Such a big, vast without any encumbrances .But political greed, ego of the political leaders spoiled the entire scenario.
Besides frequent cancellation of flights to Gulf countries, rude attitude of custom authorities in handling the incoming passengers from gulf countries, improper facilities inside the airport etc are the main reasons for the downfall of the growth in passengers. Definitely it will have a big impact on growth.

Mangalore to Delhi average Rs 6000/-
But if you check from Kannur or Goa

    Kannur to Mumbai. Average 2200/-
    Kannur to Delhi. Average 3999/-

From Hubli airport to City bus stand I pay 120rs for auto and then take bus to Udupi which turns out to be cheaper.

In long run mangalore airport will suffer if no access to cheap transport from airport to city is provided by the concerned.

In UAE we were having only one telecommunications company etisalat. They used to charge heavy charges for telephone, internets services but we were having any option. Now UAE got du telecommunications company so the charges reduced to 25 percent. I.e computation. We were having only one airport and people were helpless and were using only mangalore airport. Airport staff use to treat the passengers as beggars. They use to charge heavy charges for excess baggage even its 1 or 2 kgs. I feel computation is good.

Very good. The mangalore airport authorities will now understand the reality. Travellers get harrases every day by the custom authorities. I do understand that these officers have their own responsibility in checking luggage. But is the custom officer not able to understand while screening the contents in the luggage?? When i travelled this July , i saw nearly 50% of the travellers were made to re-screen their luggage and to open it.Disgusting . If a traveller brings some veggies , fruits (whatever they want which is allowed to carry during flying)its not the business of the custom officer to insult the person. I saw this at Mangalore Airport. Custom officers just waiting like a Vulcher to catch some innocents. Air India costs are higher than business class travel fare. Unfriendly flight timings, No proper food, no blankets , conjusted seats... and the list goes on... .. Our MLA, MP just submit request to improve the facilities , but dont follow up.

Unfortunately, I have to say that I woukd prefer travelling to Bangalore and then take a domestic flight to Mangalore for the below reasons,
    1. Cost of ticket for a Mangalore - Dubai is almost the same as travelling from Dubai-Bangalore-Mangalore.
    2. Number of flights from Abu Dhabi to Mangalore is way too less and have to only depend upon Air India Express, which is either delayed or cancelled a number of times.
    3. Facilities at Mangalore airport are not at all up to the mark. There is'nt a proper restaurant in the airport.
    4. The prices of tickets from Abu Dhabi to Mangalore are way too expensive.
    5. Approach of Airport employees such as Airline checkin staff, Security, Immigration are very lethargic.
    6. No replacement of Jet airways flights from Abu Dhabi? Why?
    7. Last but not the least, and the most traumatising is the Pre-paid taxis ripping apart the passengers.

Based on the above, would I consider landing through an International flight in Mangalore? the answer is a big NO.
Mangalore has to go miles before it can reach the stage of a good international airport. But unfortunately by then, there will be ten other airports in Kerala that will wipe away all passengers and flights landing in Mangalore. I feel that we will be back to a domestic airport again.
