Abu Dhabi: 124-year-old banks on regular Yoga, no sex and spices for longevity

Daijiworld Media Network - Abu Dhabi (SP)

Abu Dhabi, Oct 8: Swami Sivananda's presence at the Abu Dhabi airport here sent the officials in a tizzy. The fact that this fit, 124-year-old Indian, has all his organs and body parts working fine made them to miss a heartbeat recently.

Is there any secret to his health? Swami Sivananda, who was born in 1896, has a secret. He reveals that he has been able to keep himself fit as a fiddle on account of abstinence from sex, keeping spices at bay, and never failing to perform daily dose of Yogasanas.

Swami Sivananda, who gave up worldly pleasures when very young and guides people on spirituality, was born on August 8, 1896. Even at the age of 124, he is able to perform Yoga for hours on end.

The passport authorities had relied on records maintained by a temple to take down his actual date of birth. He grew at Varanasi, belonged to extremely poor family and adopted the path of leading a life devoid of any luxuries. He has simple advice to anyone who wants to stay young - stay away from sex, adopt discipline, perform Yoga regularly. He confesses that he consumes only boiled rice with dal without oil or spices. He however, uses green chilli during meals along with rice. He wants people to avoid milk and fruits. He says he was accustomed to stay without food for several days on a trot when young because of poverty. He had lost his parents when too young, and was given away by his relatives to a spiritual guide when he was six. He travelled with monks all over the country before settling down in Varanasi.

Sivananda has applied under pressure from his supporters, for recognition as the oldest living person on earth.

His sleeping habits are very simple. He sleeps on a mat laid out on the floor, and uses wooden block his pillow. His habits appear to be very healthy because even at this age, he does not suffer from health complications, travels independently, and does not need any support.

Sivananda seems to drive home the point that if we give up pleasures of life, one can enjoy long, healthy life.

    Temples do have some records. Whoever can talk to the temple and get some more details. Also talk to Baba and ask him political events or traceable events of his childhood. However even if he is only say 100 plus or minus 3, what does it matter. The Baba shows what a healthy happy 100 year old should look and act like. May god give him one more century or more.

    In the past there are no proper records maintained regarding year of birth let alone date of birth in some families, looking at his him he is very old but 124 years old only god knows. I have seen 100 + years old two people but the other old people who know their age by some calculations say that they are around 90. My saying is only probability his age may 124 or may not be 124.

    Congratulation ! All living creatures die one day but being alive still at this age is great Gods gift. We say life is short but here is an example life is long How? He follows certain limit in his diet etc. Whatever is the age or personal life he is great . He does not enjoy material life but he gives an example of living spiritual life and man / woman is called to live not only materialistic life like spice or sex but a spiritual long life as well a gift from God which only a few can have and we believe in eternal bliss which is being with God (Heaven) after this earthly life.

    Now someone will say if he was a Ghora you would believe even if it is not true. Let him enjoy his life whatever way he wants. If he lives 80 or 124 years it matters to him. You enjoy your life for 20 -30 or 80 years. It is your choice

    If Yoga can make people live 124 years and look like 90 years, then people will either desire to live long and soon cry foul saying they are a burden. Therefore, it won't be a surprise they are labelled anti-nationals, as the elderly are a burden to the nation. In politics anything is possible.

    This poem I learnt in 1981 in my 11 th standard in SAC manglore

    Here poet is telling what is the use of a oak tree ? It’s life is 100 years and it’s good for nothing
    But consider the life of lily it’s life is only one day but it’s useful to someone
    It is not growing like a tree
    In bulk, doth make man better be;
    Or standing long an oak, three hundred year,
    To fall a log at last, dry, bald, and sere:
    A lily of a day
    Is fairer far in May,
    Although it fall and die that night—
    It was the plant and flower of Light.
    In small proportions we just beauties see;
    And in short measures life may perfect be.

    Whatever his age doesn’t matter , but yoga or food habits cannot increase the age . But sure to stay fit do warm exercises, food without much spices , getup early, go to bed early and look into your own mistakes instead of peeping into others.

    There is no point living like this man, total waste. One needs to enjoy God's bountiful gifts, work hard, play hard, live life to the holy by enjoying the fruits of one's labor. I don't think this man's age is 124 , another feku. I'd rather live short but live well.

    Apparently the information of his supposed birth year was provided by a temple where he grew up.

    No birth certificate, no record.

    I am surprised that the Indian Government officials accepted the year 1896 without any scrutiny.

    As others here have opined, and looking at his face, the man is probably no more than 90.

    But, for a 90 year old, he is surprisingly fit. He walks briskly, proving that he has no joints issues whatsoever.

    If he was in US, he would have been going around in lecture tours on how to be healthy.

    There is a doubt that he was born in 1896. It has not been officially confirmed. In olden days where was the birth certificates to show as a proof??? Many People used to give whatever dates and years in the government record books. There is a very little chance to agree that he is 124 year old. If the records are true then it's a real wonder of present century as average human life filled with diseases are just 65
