Kaup: Theft at house of teacher couple - Accused arrested

Kaup, Sep 20:  Kaup police have arrested a person identified as Nishanth S Kumar(19) from Kothalkatte in Uliyargoli village here. Nishanth has been accused of stealing valuables from the house of Shankar and Girija, residing at Shivanand Nagar near Shankarapura. 

The police have recovered jewelry weighing about 111.52 grams worth Rs 2.50 lac from the accused. 

Jewelry weighing 144 grams worth Rs 4.80 lac kept in the cupboard of Shankar S and his wife Girija was stolen without the knowledge of the above couple two months back. They had complained to Kaup police about the theft on September 13. 

Kaup police began investigations on the basis of the complaint. The complainants had expressed suspicion about the involvement of Nishanth Kumar, relative of the couple, who used to visit their house often. Police concentrated their investigations on the youth, who used to visit the house whenever Vanaja, mother of the complainant, was at home. 

The police took Kumar into custody when he was going to Udupi to sell some of the jewelry in his possession, on September 18. It is said that he confessed upon questioning that he was the one who stole the said ornaments. 

He had exchanged some of the ornaments in certain jewelry shops for new ornaments. He had later pledged them in a cooperative bank and availed loan. He has reportedly confessed that the remaining ornaments were with him and he was going to Udupi to sell them off. 

The operation was conducted under the leadership of Kaup police circle inspector, Mahesh Prasad, by Kaup police sub-inspector, Rajashekar Saganooru, crime sub-inspector, Jaya K, probationary sub-inspector, Udaya Ravi, assistant sub-inspector, Pradeep, and other police personnel, and guidance of assistant superintendent of police, Krishnakanth and directions of district superintendent of police (SP), Nisha James and additional SP, Kumarachandra. 

The accused was reportedly produced in the court and was remanded to judicial custody till October 3
