Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (MS)

Udupi, Jul 11: The police from here arrested a couple in Goa relating to the murder of Ratnavati G Shetty (80), elderly home alone lady, a resident of Subramanya Nagar in the city.

Ambanna alias Ambareesh alias Ambanna Basappa Jadar alias Shiva (31), a native of Naragunda in Dharwad and his wife Rasheeda alias Khazi alias Jyoti (26) are the arrested accused.

There were four rooms for rent with the deceased Ratnavati Shetty. In two rooms, one person each was living. They had gone to their native place a few days ago. The alleged killers Shiva and Rasheeda had come to the house of Ratnavati on July 1 asking room for rent. Ratnavati had given them one room on rent.

The police said that the couple, who stayed in the room on July 1, had killed the lady on the following day in the afternoon around 3.30 pm and escaped from the spot. The decomposed body of Ratnavati was found in her house on July 5.

The accused have confessed that they did the murder to finance their lavish lifestyle. The couple had taken away gold ornaments, worth Rs 2 lac, that the deceased lady was wearing on her body during the time of the murder. The police are yet to recover this from the couple. The arrested husband and wife were produced to the court on Wednesday and have been remanded to police custody.

The accused had a long chat with the deceased Ratnavati before deciding to stay on rent in the room. They had noticed the golden ornaments Ratnavati was wearing during the chat. They conspired to kill her thinking that the lady might be having more gold kept inside the house and accepted the room on rent.

The accused Ambareesh has several cases registered against him in various parts of the state. A case of mobile theft at Hubballi, a case of scooter theft at Bijapur, a case of chain snatching at Badami and a case of theft from house at Kavoor in Mangaluru are already slapped on Ambareesh.

Police made sure that the accused were roaming in the limits of Old Goa police station. They had informed the Goa police to arrest the couple. Later a special team of police left from Udupi to Goa to bring the couple back to Udupi.

The operation was conducted under the direction of SP Nisha James and ASP Kumarachandra, and led by Udupi CI Manjunath. Malpe station officer Madhu, Udupi ASI Gopalakrishna and personnel of DCIB took part in the operation.

This is the second instance in a matter of few months where an immigrant is involved in a crime. I am not a racist but i feel the migrants must be checked properly. There are hundreds of them coming into the city in search of jobs. Perhaps the murder happened because they didnt find enough jobs here. Or perhaps its time for the local administration to have a check on them. Loads of them residing around Badagubettu, alevooru etc.

An 80 year-old in a four bedroom house can't be so poor that she had to rely on rent for income. Even if she had to, two rooms' rent could have been sufficient for sustenance. Moreover, I am sure she may not have been in a position to process documents, collect rent or maintain the property.

Generally we locals give rooms to local people, Who is supporting her in all this ? How could they rent the room to outsiders without knowing them ? Where is all the income going ?

the so called rooms may be just car shed or hut types earning few hundreds for the laborers to live..She belonged to another generation and probably was kind and gullible. Alas, you seem have to have more worry and jealous on the income of this poor woman, rather than the horrific murder that she had suffered. who are you to decie how much money she needs? Strange ways people think.

Actually, Rajesh, we shouldn't be having this discussion at all - because the lady is no anymore. Whether I am jealous or otherwise of her income, she died precisely because of the arrangement of income. If aged lady was let to live peacefully with whatever she had, probably she may have been alive.

Nevertheless, the law will question those who made all these arrangements. Let them answer, why we exchange assumptions ?
