Areca tree bike - Bantwal farmer’s invention catches Anand Mahindra’s eyes

Daijiworld Media Network - Bantwal

Bantwal, Jun 19: A unique invention of a Bantwal based farmer has got him recognition from Anand Mahindra, chairman of Mahindra Group.

Ganapathi Bhat from Sajipa invented a tree motor bike with which a person can climb areca nut trees with great ease.

Anand Mahindra who came across a news story on Bhat's invention was impressed. In a tweet, he not only expressed his appreciation but also proposed to market Bhat's device as part of Mahindra Group's farm solutions portfolio.

Knowing the challenges of climbing areca nut trees, and the difficulties of finding people who can climb them, Bhat a B Sc graduate who turned to full time farming started designing a machine that works like a bike but moves vertically. He took help from a friend who is a mechanical engineer.

It took him six years to make this concept a reality and he installed a gear box to a 2 stroke engine and also shock absorbers, disk brake and safety lock.

Pegged at a cost of Rs 75,000, the scooter can climb 90 areca trees with one liter petrol.

The machine also has a safety harness that stops the climber from falling. The device is very simple to operate and even women can climb the trees. The machine can scale a height of over 100 feet with great ease.

For more than two decades, Prof. Anil Gupta has scoured India's villages for their hidden innovations. He is motivated by the belief that the most powerful ideas for fighting poverty and hardship won't come from corporate research labs, but from ordinary people struggling to survive.

His aides have uncovered more than 25,000 inventions, from the bicycle-mounted crop sprayer to the electric paintbrush that never needs to be dipped in a paint can. Indian inventions that you've probably never heard of.

This Bantwal farmer’s invention which caught Anand Mahindra’s eyes is similar to Mechanical Tree Climber which recorded by his team.

Unfortunately, we are living in the nation where Prime Minister of this nation says 'Brain drain is good for this nation'. If these simple common man solutions are encouraged by the Ministry of Science and Technology then it could have reached many end users.

But in India common man's solution die with the common man death.

Great invention. Congrats to the inventor . Video should have shown climbing until top of the tree. Not sure what happens if the diameter of the tree changes from bottom to top. For example as you go top the diameter of the tree becomes less. Will the wheels adjust as the diameter changes? Should consider doing all safety experiments such as what happens if the driver falls half way or from the top.

Mr.Bhat proves that Engineer is not the one who has a laminated certificate at home but the one who innovates. Govt must recognize and encourage the people with positive fire that can ease the burden of many and may be generate employment too. Coastal districts of Karnataka has immense talent and zero encouragement. Mangalore has the potential to become the coimbatore of Karnataka. We need more Agri-Entrepreneurs, SMEs, Small scale industries. This innovation could solve dependency on migrant contract labor to pick the arecanuts . Congratulations on this achievement.

Thank you daijiworld for sharing this.

I Greatly appreciate Mr. Bhat's talent for creating this unique innovative machine, I have seen the videos on social media this machine is robust and the way it operates is beyond anyone's expectation, the speed is uniform without any lag. 75K is a decent price if all goes well officially Mr. Bhat can add extra features & improvise it on quality level.

"Even women can climb the areca trees" says the great bike-inventer Mr Bhat.

Yes. Every inventor must think of equality of genders. I am a great believer in that concept (although I have not invented anything yet).

I just hope youngsters won't race up the areca-nut at 200km/hour.

While there is no oncoming truck or divider to challenge them, who knows what will happen when they go past the top?

May be the next version will come equipped with a parachute.
