Mangaluru, May 25: Clashes erupted at Talapady here on Saturday May 25 evening after a victory celebration by the newly-elected Kasargod Congress MP Rajmohan Unnithan crossed into the border from Kerala.

It is learnt that four UDF supporters who were part of the procession crossed the Karnataka-Kerala border and came to Talapady toll gate shouting slogans with Muslim League flags in their hands. The locals who objected to this began shouting their own slogans in response, it is learnt. A heated argument ensued, after which two bikes returned towards Kerala.

Soon, several more UDF supporters in another 50 bikes holding Muslim League flags came to the Talapady tollgate. A Kerala KSRP squad came to Talapady and asked the young men at the spot to leave. Ullal police who received information that people holding Muslim League flags were coming in 50 bikes to Talapady arrived at the spot. When the Ullal police tried to stop them, the UDF activists pelted stones at the police. The activists also tried to damage a police vehicle near Talapady toll gate.

The group also tried to damage the Sagar Raksha Kavach vehicle belonging to Ullal station. The police in response started lathi charge, which prompted the League activists to flee leaving their vehicles and flags behind.

The police also confiscated the flags and six bikes.

Miscreants also pelted stones and damaged a KSRTC bus with passengers who were going to a wedding function from Moodigere, Chikkamagaluru to Trikaripur, Kerala. A group of masked men holding Muslim League flags hurled stones at the bus. Onlookers said that women and children in the bus were took cover in fear.

Police commissioner Sandeep Patil who came to the spot conducted inspection and asked Kerala police and Ullal station police to take suitable action against the guilty.

DCP Hanumantaraya, ACP Ramarao, SI Gopikrishna T R, SI Guruvappa Kanti and four KSRP squads have been deployed for security at the spot.
