Mangaluru: DK district - Congress unable to breach BJP's fortress since 28 years

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, May 24: Victory has eluded the Congress party in the Lok Sabha elections that have taken place in the district of Dakshina Kannada (DK) since 1991.

From 1951 to 1991 Congress had won for nine consecutive times from DK in the Lok Sabha elections. However, BJP put the brakes for the victory of Congress in 1991 and it has extended its streak to eight consecutive elections.

Dhanajay Kumar from BJP was the first who drew the first blood in 1991 by defeating Janardhana Poojary of Congress. This got repeated in the 1996 elections also. In 1998 Dhananjay Kumar won for the third consecutive time against Janardhana Poojary. In 1999 Dhananjay Kumar made it four in a row. This time the losing candidate was Veerappa Moily from the Congress.

In 2004, D V Sadananda Gowda represented BJP and defeated Veerappa Moily of Congress. In 2009, Congress fielded Janardhana Poojary again. However, this time around Nalin Kumar from BJP was victorious. In 2014 the scene got repeated and Nalin won for the second time in succession. Now, in the 2019 elections, Nalin has scored a hat-trick and Mithun Rai was the losing candidate from the Congress Party.

Post-mortem of the defeat of Congress in the just concluded Lok Sabha elections have already begun. It is said that one of the main reason is choosing the candidate at the very last moment. Mithun Rai was chosen as the Congress candidate just three days before the filing of nominations. This left with very little time for the party to plan any strategy. All it could get was a paltry 25 days for the campaign. However, it was known that Nalin would be the candidate of BJP and the activists of the party had started working since a year.

Second important reason that is being cited for the defeat of Congress is the non-arrival of any influential leaders of the national level of the party to the district. Only state level leaders like D K Shivakumar, KPCC president Dinesh Gundu Rao, C M Ibrahim and Dr Jayamala had taken part in the campaign for Mithun. CM Kumaraswamy had just participated in a campaign meeting at Sullia. Only Shatrugna Sinha was the star campaigner for the party, who participated in a meeting at Mudipu.

Congress could not campaign at the booth level due to the late nomination of the candidate. In BJP, the respective MLAs of the seven legislative constituencies that come under the DK Lok Sabha constituency, had taken the responsibility of campaigning for Nalin.

Apart from all the above, even the non-cooperation of the senior and eminent leaders of the Congress party during the campaigning also affected the polling. The leaders campaigned only in their respective legislative constituencies but never worked as a team.

BJP is winning from 1991 in Mangalore. Hindutva wave is flashing since 2014. But BJP is winning since 1991. Modiji has come since 2014. EVM machines have come since 2014. Prior to that there were no EVM machines. It is the people's verdict in Mangalore and not EVMs or Hindutva wave .

The fear of the minorities for the BJP is unfounded.
It's time for them to part of the change.
And for the Congress supporter's- chuck out the Gandhi's to have a future for the party.

If you see the breakup of votes area wise only in the city of Mangaluru or the Mangaluru legislative constituency has voted more for Mithun RAi. Rest all village areas like Sullia, Puttur and Beltangady, which are known to be inhabited by RSS have voted in favour of Nalin.

This clearly shows that the people who are facing hardships because of pumpwell, nanthoor and thokkottu are people who live in Mangaluru and they have rightly voted for a change. But it is our bad luck that our LS constituency has some morons from this mofussil areas who are blind behind caste and do not know basically what is development.

Going by this trend in the next years also BJP will win from DK

Fairly disappointed with the results..I feel following measures will bring back golden era of Congress..

1)Forget Ghatbanden..Contest on own..Congress is the only party that can garner votes and topple BJP.

2)Keep Rahul as president..He has improved vastly...Bring on capable youngsters.

3)Forget minority appeasement..Treat all as one...Primary reason for debacle in Karnataka is joining with JDS n minority appeasement by Siddaramaih..Forget Shaadi Bhagya any any other incentives which oppose others..

4)Forget blaming only Modi....Just concentrate on failures of BJP...there are plenty

Mark my words..If followed above, there will be major improvement in coming state results.

I think it is high time we the voters actively seek to be the true chowkidars of our democracy. No, not in the sense our political parties use the word chowkidar. But in a truly empowering sense; we the voters having the right to call back non-performing, corrupt law makers from their elected positions. Will it not be a potent tool in the hands of voters to make and keep elected representative responsible and accountable to tax payers, who finance their elections?

all the chaps who won on the BJP ticket need to remember that the public voted for Modi, not for them. The way things were,as the BJP candidate, it would have won. I hope those who won will put the nation's interest in front and work, keeping their petty differences aside.

This is an ideal moment for DK Congress to introspect and invest in a candidate who will have mass appeal across communities rather than install a last minute compromise based on religion, caste based profiling of electorate.
Potential candidate should take up issues of relevance to DK and work towards it during the next 4 years in time for the next elections.
Unfortunately, in DK Congress it seems that there are way too many factions which will compete against each other to really agree on a potential candidate.

Next election is likely to be very different as change in guard at the center is expected when NaMO will be 73 years old, Amit Shah will be 64 years old and Shivraj singh Chouhan will be 65 years old. It is quite likely that second level of leaders will emerge.
Unfortunately, the situation looks bleak for INC leaders when SG will be 77 years old and RaGa will be 53 years old and all the sultry on whom SG so much depends today will be older by 5 years.

No. All these are not priorities. First eliminating each and every kashmiri terrorists and stone pelters. And then removing article 370. After that construction of Ram Mandir. Then if time permits then Pumpwell.

Yes you are right. If Pumpwell flyover not constructed no one going to die. One terrorist can kill 40 people. So killing kashmiri terrorists and stone pelters should be the first and foremost priority.

Even if a Saffron coloured Robot from BJP, contests election from D.K, Udupi and most of the states, it will win in absolute majority. Mr Shah can try next time. Thats the extent in which Modi n team succeded in blindfolding us..Eventhough we know the facts, still we act as if everything is alright and Indias economy is worlds top amidst shutting down of businesses and increasing unemployments, fake promises for eg. Smart City.
