Post-May 23: Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh governments to fall?

Political Correspondent - New Delhi

New Delhi, May 21: The attempts to bring BJP governments to power in Karnataka as well as in Madhya Pradesh are gaining momentum. If exit poll predictions turn true, there will be slim chances for H D Kumaraswamy led Congress- JD(S) coalition government in Karnataka, as well as for Kamal Nath led government in Madhya Pradesh, to survive.

To begin the move, on Monday, Madhya Pradesh state BJP president wrote a letter to Governor Anandiben Patel, requesting for a special session of a floor test for the current Congress government to prove numbers.

According to the leader of the opposition in the state assembly and senior BJP leader Gopal Bhargava, Kamal Nath's Congress government is reduced to a minority as many Congress leaders have expressed desire to leave the party after the exit poll predictions came out. Most of the exit polls predicted that BJP will win t least 25 seats out of 27 in the state. The exit poll also predicted a massive win for Narendra Modi led NDA government, which would be considered as a record for any non-Congress government at the Centre.

H D Kumaraswamy, Kamal Nath

BJP national general secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya has also said that the fall of the Kamal Nath government is imminent.

There are many political analysts who have predicted the fall of Congress government in Madhya Pradesh which has 114 MLAs of its own. The government is held together with the support from two Mayawati led BSP, one SP and four independent MLAs.

A senior BJP leader in New Delhi, who wanted to remain anonymous, said that, Mayawati will switch her loyalty from Mahaghatbandan to BJP post-May 23. She will first ask her two MLAs to withdraw support for Madhya Pradesh government before officially joining NDA at the Centre. Political analysts are not ruling out this possibility.

On the other hand, growing dissent within Karnataka state Congress and its deteriorating relationship with JD(S) leaders are believed to be the triggers to bring down one-year-old H D Kumaraswamy government. According to BJP inside sources, at least 12 Congress MLAs are lined-up to join BJP as they are only waiting for May 23 official poll results.

It is understood that, senior BJP leader Ram Madhav, who is also tipped to be next BJP president, is carefully handling the situation in Madhya Pradesh and also keeping an eye on Karnataka politics. In the recent past, at least three attempts of toppling state government under Yeddyurappa’s leadership were foiled.

BJP camps in both MP and Karnataka are jubilant after the exit poll predictions were out. The heavy political activities behind the scenes have already begun in both the states. Many Congress MLAs from both states might jump the ship as revival chances for Congress in the near future look slim.

Only on May 23, the day of the counting and results, a clear picture will emerge.

Post polls many things could happen.

If BJP is forming next govt., congress will have tough time to retain its flock.

Same time, if BJP fails to form Govt., there will be many many more to leave it for good. In many states it played number game, that will end quickly.
