Zulekha Hospital Dubai saves patient's orbital tumour by surgery

Media Release

Dubai, Apr 30: 40-year-old Asim Jamil, was admitted to Zulekha Hospital, here with a bulging left eye causing him pain and redness. Following a CT scan it was clear that Asim had an orbital tumour causing Exophthalmos which was located just inside the bone of the eye orbit.

Exophthalmos is dangerous if left untreated as it can cause the eyelid to fail to close during sleep leading to corneal dryness and damage. This will also cause redness or irritation where the area above the cornea becomes inflamed as a result of increased friction when blinking. The process that is causing the displacement of the eye may also compress the optic nerve or ophthalmic artery and lead to blindness.

Asim underwent surgery in Zulekha Hospital, here where Dr Mohamed Ramadan Mahmoud, consultant Ophthalmology assisted by clinical staff Mohamed Faysal, conducted a land orbital tumour excision under local anesthesia which took around 60 minutes to complete. Once extracted, the tumour was sent to histopathology for investigation and found to be benign. These tumours are congenital with no specific causes during one’s lifetime.

Dr Mohamed Ramadan Mahmoud commented: “It is a rare condition and it is the first time that we have treated this in Zulekha Hospital. It was easily carried out under local anesthesia and did not expose the patient to any complications causing a negative impact to the vision of the patient. Had the tumour been left untreated, this could impact the patient’s vision with its growth.”

The patient is now healthy and recovering well and he returned to work after 48 hours of the procedure. Asim extends his heartfelt thanks to the Zulekha Hospital Ophthalmology team saying: “The uncomfortable feeling inside the eye has been treated well and I am feeling better now.”
