Artistes urge citizens to vote against 'anti-nationals'

New Delhi, Apr 29 (IANS): Several creative artistes from different fields on Sunday issued a statement urging people to vote against "anti-nationals" in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections.

"India is at crossroads in its domestic and foreign policy and faces serious threats in its ongoing progress. We have shared disputes among each other but under the present circumstances we have joined hands after much thought to appeal to all our fellow citizens to cast their vote and exercise their right to elect the new government with conviction and courage," the statement read.

The signatories included actors Akshay Kumar, Vivek Oberoi, Sunny Deol and Rahul Roy, writers Vikram Sampath, Ashok Chakradhar and Namita Gokhale, dancer Sonal Mansingh and singer Daler Mehndi. Deol is also the BJP candidate from Gurdaspur in Punjab.

"We strongly agree that during the last five years, India has seen a government that has delivered corruption-free good governance and development oriented administration. But it will be impossible for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure safety and well-being of the nation if anti-national elements get elected to the parliament," the statement said.

"The sons and daughters of Mother India were horrified at the events that were seen in many campuses of India, mainly JNU, where students studying at the expense of the taxpayers' money chanted slogans that were aimed at disturbing the sovereignty of India. It is our conviction that such forces need to be stopped," it added.

On April 10, over 900 artistes and people from the field of literature issued a statement urging people to vote for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies.

The 907 signatories included Pandit Jasraj, Vivek Oberoi, Shankar Mahadevan, Koena Mitra, Rahul Roy and Triloki Nath Mishra, among others.

The statement came days after over 200 writers from across the country appealed to the citizens to vote out the BJP and end the politics of hate.

In an open letter published on the Indian Cultural Forum, writers and scholars, including Arundhati Roy, Amitav Ghosh, Nayantara Sahgal and Romila Thapar, said that hate politics was being used to divide the country and exclude more number of people from living as "full-fledged citizens".

Two Days after the release of the open letter, more than 600 theatre and film personalities, including Amol Palekar, Naseeruddin Shah, Girish Karnad and Usha Ganguli, signed a letter urging people to "vote the BJP and its allies out of power", arguing that the idea of India and its Constitution were under threat.

Many people are asking here who is an antinational. Let me explain.

BJP is a nationalist party, holding nation's interest first, always.
From ages, our airforce badly needed Rafaels to counter pak's F16. But Congress slept over saying no funds. BJP government signed a deal and the purchase is on.
OROP, passed by BJP, which is for the benefit of our soldiers.
Two surgical strikes--clearly an act of national pride.
So, concluding.. All those who does not want the BJP government at the center, are anti nationals.

Chowkidar Shankar, Mangaluru — please don't try to defend the indefensible —grow up.
The BJP cancelled the Rafael agreement for 126 fighter aircraft along with an option for 63 additional aircraft that was signed by the UPA govt and instead renegotiated the deal by purchasing 36 aricraft at over 3 times the cost!.
In addition under the UPA agreement 108 aircraft were to be manufactured under license by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) whereas the chaddi thug fakendra modi renegotiated the manufacture to be done by Anil Ambani who would even know how to spell aircraft!

Speaking about nationalism, its but strange that you term BJP as a nationalist party when the biggest anti-national terrorist Shatvi Pragya Singh Thakur was hand-picked by Hoaxendarnath Fakendradas Fruadendranath Modi and nominated to contest the Bhopal parliamentary seat!

Get your facts straight. The UPA did not sign the deal at all. It was only negotiations for nearly a decade. you can compare only if the deal was signed by UPA and it was cancelled.

Ganesh, BANGALORE & Rajesh Mangalore — On 31 January 2012, the Indian Ministry of Defence announced that Dassault Rafale had won the MMRCA competition to supply the Indian Air Force with 126 aircraft, along with an option for 63 additional aircraft. The first 18 aircraft were to be supplied by Dassault Aviation fully built and the remaining 108 aircraft were to be manufactured under license by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) with transfer of technology from Dassault. Rafale was chosen as the lowest bidder based on life-cycle cost, which is a combination of cost of acquisition, operating cost over a duration of 40 years and cost of transfer of technology.[1] The negotiations with Dassault dragged on due to disagreements on warranty for aircraft produced by HAL. India wanted Dassault to ensure the quality of aircraft produced by HAL, but Dassault refused to do so.[2][3] In January 2014, it was reported that the cost of the deal had escalated to $30 billion (₹1,86,000 crore), with each aircraft costing $120 million (₹746 crore).[4] In February 2014, defence minister A. K. Antony said that the procedure of calculation of life-cycle cost was being re-examined and the contract could not be signed in fiscal year 2013-14 due to budgetary constraints.[5] In March 2014, HAL and Dassault signed a work share agreement to manage licensed manufacture.[6]!

Dear Mr Chwkidar chor hai, I asked you about the signed agreement for purchase of 126 rafale aircraft but you are giving details of proposed agreement. what makes you think that the fighter aircraft prposed to be brought by UPA & NDA are the same? . There were india specefic changes made in the airccraft. If there was evidence why the details were not shared in the supreme court?. why supreme court not take cognisance of the price increase? where is the money trail?. finally you need not use execcive expletives to put accross a point. these are signs of nervous people who think that using jibes will make argument stronger.

What about Polarising people for elections and indulging in Divisive Politics. Is it not Anti National to divide our own people like the Britishers had done.

Nothing but Chamchagiri of the BJP. These actors like Rajnikant should remain neutral or float a political party instead of behaving like Chamchas of the BJP.

Sure signs of desperation on the part of BJP.
