Mangaluru: Voters names dropped from list without any notice, alleges J R Lobo

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SB)

Mangaluru, Apr 18: Former MLA J R Lobo on Thursday, April 18 alleged that voters’ list at many polling stations had mistakes with many voters’ names being dropped from the list without prior notice.

Addressing media, he said, “The names of voters who cast their vote in the last elections were dropped from voters’ list this time without any notice. At booth number 55 Bikarnakatte, around 200 voters were denied from casting vote because the voters’ list did not have their names. They all voted in last elections and still reside in the same area,”

“Voter’s lists in Ashoknagar, Bendore and many other areas also did not have names. I am asking the authority who gave permission to them to remove the names of voters who are the citizens of India. Whom did they ask before removing the names and why they did not inform the voters about the reason of removal of names? Why did the authorities deny voting rights for people who are the permanent residents of the district?” he questioned.

“Thousands of people were denied voting rights for not having door numbers. In the city, there are many buildings without completion certificates. Hence, flats do not have door numbers. Due to this reason, many residents of those buildings have been denied voting rights. There are many alternative solutions to add names in the voters’ list. But authorities never followed them. Voting is a fundamental right and for the some minor reasons, the department rejected people their rights,” he said.

“At every polling booth, voters’ lists omitted an average 25 names who are permanent residents of particular ward. It is a suspicious act and there are chances of foul play. I demand investigation into this. On basis of records, I am going to file complaint with the Election Commission and chief electoral officer,” he informed.

“The missing of names in the voters’ lists shows that the there is defect in the system itself. It will not help for fair elections. It will affect the result also. My intention is to correct the system and highlight the faults. Meanwhile, I request the electoral system to link Aadhaar card to voter’s ID. It will help to reduce errors,” he said.

I have returned back to India to settle down.In assembly elections I couldn't vote because the election commision does not consider Aadhar as address proof !!! Aadhar is only a identity proof. So this time I acted early and applied online. I changed my old bank account address to my present address by giving Aadhar card as address proof!!! . (Bank pass book is valid address proof but Aadhar is not!!! )and I got my EPIC (voter id)number after numeous follow ups only last week. EC officials told me i can go to booth by taking Aadhar card as proof. I downloaded my details from online nvsp website.
Today to my surprise there was a different person on the serial number listed and the booth level officer asked me to go to Corporation election office but the office was closed. So i called up 1950 the telephone for ECI and after numerous attempts got through and they told me my serial number has been changed and gave me my new serial number. Finally I was able to vote .
I am fortunate to be persistent and have good communication skill. How many will be denied their rights I do not know.
I totally agree with JR Lobo on this issue. The present system is very vulnerable for misuse.

Most of the voters are not educated does not mean that they dont have right to vote. Actually when there are more uneducated voters, the administration and not the party workers should make effort all of them are included in voting process.

Not only in the areas mentioned are the voters names deleted. Even in Bangalore in areas like Nagarbhavi a lot of people were denied to vote since their names were deleted from the voters list. It is some plan by someone.

I don't agree with J R Lobo. Administrations is repeatedly publishing in all media to verify the names in the voters list. It is voters duty to check at least few days before the election. And must inform the authorities if there is anybody's name is missing. And not at the time of voteing going on. Or the party volunteers must check the names from house to house. In India most of the voters don't know the importance of voting and vote is going for what and which Post . Most of candidates and voters are not qualified nor educated.

Please check the additional voters' list too if any of your names are missing. Many voters' have initially not found their names in the list. But they found their names in the additional voters'list, even though they've voted previous elections and have stayed at the same address. Only God knows the way this govt works! How much ever we try and update our name/address etc , still some or the mistake remains. But to remove from the list it's so easy...

These things are increasing in every elections after elections and have no solutions. The best solution would be is if you have compulsory Aadhar for Bank Account, then why not for voting. Let election id card and aadhar be mandatory to link. All most all problems solved. Aadhar has individual's biometrics. What more proof one needs to match?
