Chikkamagaluru bishop, priest accused of irregularities in land, pepper deals

Daijiworld Media Network – Chikkamagaluru (SB)

Chikkamagaluru, Apr 6: Christian community members of 46 churches of Chikkamagaluru diocese have accused Bishop Anthony Swamy and Fr Shantharaj of being involved in irregularities regarding lands pertaining to St Joseph Education Society and have demanded a probe against them.

As per sources, community members have strong piece of evidence against Bishop Anthony Swamy and priest Fr Shantharaj that they have misused the financial sources of the diocese and are directly involved in scam of land and sale of pepper owned by the diocese. It is said that on Sunday, the community members and its leaders gathered at Catholic Club at Chikkamagaluru and discussed further steps on the probe of the alleged scam.

Bishop Anthony Swamy

Community leader Stanly D'Silva

Presenting the issue Stanly D’Silva said, “The diocese owns an agricultural land at Baskal. It is a multi crop estate. In 2016, the administration of the diocese cultivated pepper and sold it. There is a huge amount of change in price which denotes that the bishop and his close aides have made money by selling the produce for higher prices. When lay leaders tried to seek clarification on it, Bishop Anthony Swamy and Fr Shantharaj are not ready to give a convincing answer.

“Secondly, without permission of the governing council, the bishop has reportedly transferred the land of St Joseph Education Society to his name and made six sites and sold them to private parties. A donor donated this land to the diocese for the construction of a school for poor children in 1984. But now, the bishop has become the owner of this land and with forged documents and signatures. The bishop also sold another 20 guntas land which was donated by an individual for the construction of hostel. The current value of this land is Rs 18 crore. But the bishop says that he sold it for Rs 2.10 crore. We suspect that there is a scam in this deal and the bishop has received a bigger amount under a secret agreement.

“Apart from this, the bishop and his close aides are ruling the diocese as autocrats. There are no rights for community members and lay leaders to express their opinions. The bishop himself is taking all decisions and does not listen to anyone. If this continues the same way, it will pave way for a riot within the community,” he said.

It is learnt that a committee of lay leaders has been formed to investigate the allegation made on the bishop and the priest. A two-week time period has been given to the bishop and the administration to give convincing answers. If they fail, as part of protest, the members of 46 churches will hold a march from AIT Circle to the Bishop’s house. They have also decided to submit a memorandum to the government for probe in the issue.

Leaders Pramod Pinto, Maria Raj, Jochim, and Alwyn D’Souza were present in the meeting.

It's very sad to see that dirty linen is being washed in public. The Bishop and the Church administration must come out clean in this whole episode. All are human and everyone can succumb to temptation, nothing is sacred and no one is above the law. Transparency is the need of he hour and I suggest a committee of legal and Chartered Accountants from the community to look into the grievances of he parishioners of the 46 churches and settle the matter.

The Bible clearly states in Matthew 16:24 and Luke 9:23 - what is the condition to follow
    Christ and his teachings.

Christianity however simply does the opposite - it is very materialistic - building large churches
with costly wooden altars, benches and pews, and fittings, and owning land, building schools, all
from the money collected in tithes and donations from the people of the parish.

Therefore, the Church and all it's properties belong to the people of the Parish and not to some
Bishop in Udupi, Mangalore or Chikkamangalore, and therefore the Parishioners should be active
and look into the financial and social affairs of the Church and those who are appointed to serve it.

Especially in these times, when more women are inducted to serve every committee in the Church, when Priests own cars and drive everywhere, Bishops have private security and private quarters, cooks, maids, and all the luxuries - Jesus did not even have a pillow!

Since I have started stabilising my head last 30 years, I have been studying and watching corruption at all level (just give lots of example, one priest died few years ago fell in a well !!, next, in belthangady priest was killed ! , lot more in the history of religion). My opinion is very simple, if it is a catholic priest or imam or swamy, all are born with flesh and blood, some would do corruption (not all I accept).
Any one indulged in such corruption should be investigated and punished. Doesn't matter if the person is swamy, imam or priest, they all are flesh and blood people, bound to do corruption.

In the past when first Christians who were mostly migrants from Goa to escape inquisition by Portuguese who were not that much educated but agriculturists, as such all the property of the Church was looked after by priests & bishops who were educated & some were from Portugal itself.
Now that most of Coastal Christians are highly educated the property & wealth should be managed by a Committee comprising of local church members, priests, bishops & Chartered Accountants of the community & all decisions & money spent, received must be made transparent through suitable means with all community members.
All these things should be controlled & managed in such a way as some companies or co-op societies do in their A G meetings. The money & wealth is used in such a way that the community's welfare is achieved instead of hoarding in some banks or financial instruments which are of no use to the community as big land holdings or wealth might be used to construct buildings like colleges, hostels, convention halls, hospitals commercial buildings which only looks at money they can make rather than service to the community.
As some suggest govt. intervention is not beyond scams & corruption along with influence of politicians to get some plum posts with no accountability to the people to whom the money belongs.

Yes every one is aware of this fact but our humble suggestion is, in such cases who wants money and luxurious life, they should not join such religious life. They can study and join the job and live as they want. As one of the commentators said here that most of the faithful keep quiet and tolerate in order to retain in their faith and religion. Many know what's going on but keep their eyes closed and mouth shut. One important thing here Rudolph is if you work hard you won't get huge amount of money outside the religious life.
