Terror attack on Christchurch mosques: Shooter a white supremacist seeking revenge

Sydney, May 15 (AP): The gunman behind at least one of the mosque shootings in New Zealand that left 49 people dead on Friday tried to make a few things clear in the manifesto he left behind: He is a 28-year-old Australian white nationalist who hates immigrants. He was set off by attacks in Europe that were perpetrated by Muslims. He wanted revenge, and he wanted to create fear.

He also, quite clearly, wanted attention.

Though he claimed not to covet fame, the gunman - whose name was not immediately released by police - left behind a 74-page document posted on social media under the name Brenton Tarrant in which he said he hoped to survive the attack to better spread his ideas in the media.

He also livestreamed to the world in graphic detail his assault on the worshippers at Christchurch's Al Noor Mosque.

That rampage killed at least 41 people, while an attack on a second mosque in the city not long after killed several more. Police did not say whether the same person was responsible for both shootings.

While his manifesto and video were an obvious and contemptuous ploy for infamy, they do contain important clues for a public trying to understand why anyone would target dozens of innocent people who were simply spending an afternoon engaged in prayer.

There could be no more perplexing a setting for a mass slaughter than New Zealand, a nation so placid and so isolated from the mass shootings that plague the U.S. that even police officers rarely carry guns.

Yet the gunman himself highlighted New Zealand's remoteness as a reason he chose it. He wrote that an attack in New Zealand would show that no place on earth was safe and that even a country as far away as New Zealand is subject to mass immigration.

He said he grew up in a working-class Australian family, had a typical childhood and was a poor student. A woman who said she was a colleague of his when he worked as a personal trainer in the Australian city of Grafton said she was shocked by the allegations against him.

"I can't ... believe that somebody I've probably had daily dealings with and had shared conversations and interacted with would be able of something to this extreme," Tracey Gray told the Australian Broadcasting Corp.

Beyond his white nationalistic ideals, he also considers himself an environmentalist and a fascist who believes China is the nation that most aligns with his political and social values. He has contempt for the wealthiest 1 percent. And he singled out American conservative commentator Candace Owens as the person who had influenced him the most.

In a tweet, Owens responded by saying that if the media portrayed her as the inspiration for the attack, it had better hire lawyers.

Throughout the manifesto, the theme he returns to most often is conflict between people of European descent and Muslims, often framing it in terms of the Crusades.

He wrote that the episode that pushed him toward violence took place in 2017 while he was touring through Western Europe. That was when an Uzbek man drove a truck into a crowd of people in Stockholm, killing five. The Australian was particularly enraged by the death of an 11-year-old Swedish girl in the attack.

He said his desire for violence grew when he arrived in France, where he became enraged by the sight of immigrants in the cities and towns he visited.

And so he began to plot his attack. Three months ago, he started planning to target Christchurch. He claimed not to be a direct member of any organization or group, though he said he has donated to many nationalist groups. He also claimed he contacted an anti-immigration group called the reborn Knights Templar and got the blessing of Anders Breivik for the attack.

Breivik is a right-wing Norwegian extremist who killed 77 people in Oslo and a nearby island in 2011. Breivik's lawyer Oeystein Storrvik told Norway's VG newspaper that his client, who is in prison, has "very limited contacts with the surrounding world, so it seems very unlikely that he has had contact" with the New Zealand gunman.

The gunman had a long wish list for what he hoped the attack would achieve. He hoped it would reduce immigration by intimidating immigrants. He hoped to drive a wedge between NATO and the Turkish people. He hoped to further polarize and destabilize the West. And he hoped to create more conflict over gun laws in the U.S., thus leading to a civil war that would ultimately result in a separation of races.

Though he claimed not to be a Nazi, in the video he livestreamed of the shooting the number 14 is seen on his rifle. That may be a reference to the "14 Words," a white supremacist slogan attributed in part to Adolf Hitler's "Mein Kampf," according to the Southern Poverty Law Center. He also used the symbol of the Schwarze Sonne, or black sun, which "has become synonymous with myriad far-right groups who traffic in neo-Nazi," according to the center.

His victims, he wrote, were chosen because he saw them as invaders who would replace the white race. He predicted he would feel no remorse for their deaths. And in the video he livestreamed of his shooting, no remorse can be seen or heard. Instead, he simply says: "Let's get this party started."

Then he picks up his gun, storms into the mosque, and cuts down one innocent life after another.

When it is over, he climbs back into his car, where he has left his music playing - the song "Fire" by the English rock band The Crazy World of Arthur Brown. And right after the singer bellows, "I am the god of hellfire!" the gunman drives away.

Some of the material posted by the killer resembles the meme-heavy hate speech prominent in dark corners of the internet. Beneath the online tropes lies a man who matter-of-factly wrote that he was preparing to conduct a horrific attack.

Music

- The shooter’s soundtrack as he drove to the mosque included an upbeat-sounding tune that belies its roots in a destructive European nationalist and religious conflict. The nationalist Serb song from the 1992-95 war that tore apart Yugoslavia glorifies Serbian fighters and Bosnian Serb political leader Radovan Karadzic, who is jailed at the United Nations war crimes tribunal in The Hague for genocide and other war crimes against Bosnian Muslims. A YouTube video for the song shows emaciated Muslim prisoners in Serb-run camps during the war. “Beware Ustashas and Turks,” says the song, using wartime, derogatory terms for Bosnian Croats and Muslims.

- When the gunman returned to his car after the shooting, the song “Fire” by English rock band “The Crazy World of Arthur Brown” can be heard blasting from the speakers. The singer bellows, “I am the god of hellfire!” as the man, a 28-year-old Australian, drives away.

Symbols

- At least two rifles used in the shooting bore references to Ebba Akerlund, an 11-year-old girl killed in an April 2017 truck-ramming attack in Stockholm by Rakhmat Akilov, a 39-year-old Uzbek man. Akerlund’s death is memorialized in the gunman’s apparent manifesto, published online, as an event that led to his decision to wage war against what he perceives as the enemies of Western civilization.

- The number 14 is also seen on the gunman’s rifles. It may refer to “14 Words,” which according to the Southern Poverty Law Center is a white supremacist slogan linked to Adolf Hitler’s “Mein Kampf.” He also used the symbol of the Schwarze Sonne, or black sun, which “has become synonymous with myriad far-right groups,” according to the center, which monitors hate groups.

Historical References

- In photographs from a now deleted Twitter account associated with the suspect that match the weaponry seen in his live-streamed video, there is a reference to “Vienna 1683,” the year the Ottoman Empire suffered a defeat in its siege of the city at the Battle of Kahlenberg. “Acre 1189,” a reference to the Crusades, is also written on the guns.

- Four names of legendary Serbs who fought against the 500-year-rule of the Muslim Ottomans in the Balkans, written in the Cyrillic alphabet, are also seen on the gunman’s rifles.

- The name Charles Martel, who the Southern Poverty Law Center says white supremacists credit “with saving Europe by defeating an invading Muslim force at the Battle of Tours in 734,” was also on the weapons. They also bore the inscription “Malta 1565,” a reference to the Great Siege of Malta, when the Maltese and the Knights of Malta defeated the Turks.

- The names of two 15th-century Hungarian military leaders known for fighting against the advancing Ottomans are also mentioned. John Hunyadi’s name is written on a rifle, while Mihaly Szilagyi Horogszegi’s name is on an ammunition magazine.

I can definitely understand the pain our Muslim brothers are feeling. One does not have to be a Muslim to feel such pain. I have to ask them one question: when hundreds of Christians were bombed in Pakistani and Egyptian Churches, you did not feel any pain, nor did you condemn the terrorists. Is it because the people who lost their lives were non-Muslims or what you call them "infidels"? Why double standard? When your guys do such things, it's jihad for you guys and when the same thing is done by others, it's terrorism.

    Hey Chris Tel Aviv

    listen...

A German Muslim scholar when he was asked about TERRORISM and Islam.
He said. "Who started the first world war? Not Muslims!!
Who started the second world war? Not Muslims!!
Who killed 6 million Jews in the Holocaust ? Not Muslims.
Who killed about 20 millions of Aborigines in Australia ? Not Muslims!!
Who sent the nuclear bombs of Hiroshima and Nagasaki? Not Muslims!!
Who killed more than 100 millions of Indians in North America? Not Muslims!!
Who killed more than 50 million of Indians in south America? Not Muslims!!
Who took about 180 millions of African people as slaves and 88% of them died and were thrown overboard into Atlantic ocean? Not Muslims!!
No, NOT Muslims!! First of all, You will have to define terrorism properly. If a non-Muslim does something bad. It is crime. But if a Muslim commits the same. He is a Terrorist. So first remove this double standards. Then come to the point. I am proud to be a MUSLIM !!

Lets spread Love, Tolerance and Humanity with each other...

None of them are in peace and wherever they go they create instability just because why? Same token so many Hindus Sikhs Buddhist go every corner of the world but none of them created such environments any part of the world. Rather integrated and contributed to those nations generous way with mixing thier religion evan though they were proud of their faith. You can be proud in your belief at home and worship places but dont dictate in public life of your faith thinking superior way. That is called stupid way of living

The rising 'anti-immigrant' parties of Europe and the Australian continent on the popularity of 'hate' has invited the new wave terror in their own doorstep. Let's not forget the 'colonial era' which ruled for centuries depriving the native people now facing the crisis of war of adventurous for resources and the lust of rule facing the reversed tide of a great humanitarian tragedy into refugee seeking shelter and security.
Australia is no excluded from the crisis which saw early immigrant from Tamils from Srilanka, then Afghanistan, Lebanon, Muslims from Myanmar which resulted in electing -Anti-immigrant' party. The 'Black Friday' terror suspects Brenton Tarrant is bi-product of such parties which seek votes on hatred.
Does the world intelligent fail to protect this attack?
Yes! Terrorism in America, West: Major terror attacks by White men, media terms them 'shooter' or 'gunmen'. As many as 50 persons were killed in one of the worst shooting incidents in American history by Stephen Paddock in Las Vegas. But the media was not using the word 'Terror'.
Anders Breivik in Norway shot dead 77 persons, who had a large cache of arms and ammunition and went on a firing spree, was later arrested and follow up stories described him as 'Madman' or 'Insane', more often, as 'Delusional Shooter'.
Brenton parents are of Scottish, Irish and English stock. He had a regular childhood, without any great issues. He had little interest in education, barely achieving a passing grade. He began planning an attack roughly 2 years in advance and an attack at the location in Christchurch 3 months in advance. Has a brief history of connection with Norwegian shooter Breivik which 'Europe' has declared insane.
When Queen Elizabeth to leaders of the entire world condemned the 'terror attack', only Indian PM Modi remained silent who is seeking votes using for upcoming elections martyrdom soldiers in Pulwama terror attack.
Will Facebook, Australia, EU, BBC will accept terror beyond 'Muslim'?

I don't think he is an anti-Muslim but an anti-immigrants. He went to the Mosques where you find mostly immigrants from Asian & Africans countries, not White people. For him non-White Muslims, Christians and Hindus are same because they are immigrants. If he had gone to a Church, he would find more Whites than non-Whites. He would have also gone to a Hindu temple and killed Hindus though I don't know if there is any such temple in Christchurch. Yes, he did kill the innocent unharmed worshippers and he would be definitely punished by the NZ Govt. The NZ or any Western Governments will not protect the terrorists where the law is equal to Christians and non-Christians. We know how the terrorists like bin Laden, al-Zawahiri, Azhar, Masood, etc. etc. (the list is so long and I don't want to waste my time writing their names here) were / are royally protected by Pak governments BECAUSE they are killing non-Muslims who are in their opinion "infidels" or kafirs. Nearly 4,000 people were killed in 9/11 attack, many more in London and other parts of Europe, scores of Christians were killed in Iraq & Syria, we have seen many such killings in Mumbai and other parts of our country.... who did it? Definitely not Christians. Well, I am not trying to justify what this lunatic guy did in NZ. This is just an one-off case, very uncommon to be done by a Christian. Having said, I would further say terrorism is terrorism whether it is done by Christians or Muslims, Whites or Blacks. It’s heart wrenching. My prayers go to the victims and their families.

New Zealands Prime minister says Sorry .. This is the key difference between terror states such as Pakistan, saudi arabia kuwait ..etc.. in these states it would have been considered as "khafirs" being killed and the awaiting virgins in heaven and that all is well and within Sharia boundaries..

Whereas as in India,Germany, bhutan, nepal, europe, south america, france, britain,USA,Canada ..and other culturally tolerant states ..it is considered as a national shame.
interestingly ..when a muslim is killed certain people here feel they are humans ...and when a non muslim is killed ..they feel khafirs are killed and they deserve to be killed ..
Anyways ..as a human I condemn killing of fellow humans in the name of religion..caste,creed ,ethnicity etc..
Law is a matter of state and let the state do what is deemed necessary to protect its citizens ..please do not take law into your own hands.

Yes, let us blame on all but ourselves. Most of the problems in the Middle East are local. (tribal/ethnic/religious(Shia/Sunni) etc). Sometimes, foreign elements do interfere but the main cause is local. Syria (Assad who is a Alawite is challenged by Sunnis etc) Bahrain (Minority Sunnis challenged by Shias), Yemen ( free for all among the minority Shias and Sunnis and along tribal lines) etc. So, take the first step and acknowledge that you have huge internal problems instead of wanting to blame foreigners at every step.

These immigrants from 'peaceful 'countries are ditching their hell hole and migrating in hordes to Europe, USA , NS, Aus , Canada etc. The issues is, they expect, want & demand special treatment. Like Halal meat, Halal water , Madrassas where there are more than 2 houses, Mosques with speakers, unique dressing attire, no family planning etc. Moreover they cannot co exist and dessist others from residing close to their houses if they are majority .Eg Birmingham. If they are weeping now, its only they who have to be blamed. They should not leave their countries where such type of 'special previleges' are a norm and accepted.

Mr. Chris, tel Aviv, there's something called humanity also which is beyond any belief or culture. May it be any religion or belief, human life is precious and the one who plays with it can never be from his religion. So please respect human life and don't support the people who play with others life. Religion is just being used by these criminals to hide their sins/ crimes. And most of us get carried away thinking that the criminal belongs to our religion and he is just taking the revenge. This will go on and on, then one fine day the victim of these criminals could be you, me or our loved ones.
We must follow the good things our religion teaches us. So lets pray for all the victims who died or went through any kind of torture by any of such criminals irrespective of their religions and nationality.
Let's support HUMANITY rather than these criminals carrying fake so called religion mask.
May God almighty show mercy on all the victims and their families of such attacks.
Thank you and apologies if I have hurt anyone in my comment. God bless you all.

Sir, When the whole world is in grief, you are comment are excluded and more regrettable. You draw lines religion for terror who themselves don't follow the world of God.

Didn't you read in the bible “You shall not murder". like Quran for Muslims reads "For that cause We decreed for the Children of Israel that whosoever killeth a human being for other than manslaughter or corruption in the earth, it shall be as if he had killed all mankind, and whoso saveth the life of one, it shall be as if he had saved the life of all mankind. Our messengers came unto them of old with clear proofs (of Allah's Sovereignty), but afterwards lo! many of them became prodigals in the earth".

Anyone who says the Bible, Quran or Torah advocates terrorism obviously hasn't read.

You put yourself among the 49 people who killed in Christchurch mosques. No mother will like to see her son/daughter body riddled with bullets for the reason and hate for the fault of others. No religion advocates hate.
I don't know you're upbringing. But only widows, orphans and parents now the pain of losing a lost one. No matter whichever religion he belongs to.

Love, compulsion and humanity are essential for a human to be a good human. Let's not forget our blood color is the same.

This incident is a great example to think wisely around us, within us and look why such incidents took place? Cause root? Answer is many of us know it by now. It has happened in Newzealand and govt has taken quick actions and all west acted to protect Muslim worshippers and mosques but it happens in many muslims countires like Pakistan Afghan Somalia it never reaches to a media and so many people die. My point here is killing is not a solutions. People has to sit and think why world has reached to this level? Who created such hate? Every year many Christian worshippers are killed in Pakistan Egypt Nigeria and many places but it never makes to the main media and evan those countries govt never protect them and evan support cleansing the minorities. Bottomline is love one a other without limitation of religion or superiority of faith of others. Love one another like you love your own self's. Stop preaching violence and hate no one. God bless you all. Let's pray for those who has died with this sad incident.

What has happened is a act of terror, no individual supports this, nor any country supported this. NZ will take proper legal action against the guilty and won't support them due to their religious status. That's the difference between Pakistan and other countries, Pakistan grows, supports terror, but here no one is supporting the terrorists. We all have to condemn the attack and not support this as mainly done in their community. Whi ever kills Innocent people are terrorists.

World is getting angry and frustrated like this terrorist has did killing innocent people in the worship place. Brother my humble request is please hate no one. Over the centuries killings/bomb blasts have been taking place inside mosques all over many Muslim countries that are far too many to enumerate.

In November and December of 1979 the Mahdi's and their supporters took over the Grand mosque in Mecca and killed several hundreds of pilgrims. For over 2 months the armed forces of several countries tried and failed. First the Saudis, then the Arab forces led by Jordan & Egypt, then the Pakistanis. Finally, after a lot of reluctance they brought in the White French Military that was predominantly Christian and after two months of continues blood shed in the holiest of holy places the Grand mosque was liberated. In 1980 Saudi's fired on a group of Iranian Pilgrim and 450 Shite Muslims carrying placards of Khomeini and shouting anti Saudi royal family slogans were killed in Mecca. A few years ago there were also bomb blasts in prophets mosque in Medina

White Supremes have even attacked an African American Christian churches in the US a few years ago and killed several black Christian worshippers. Hence, before you go ahead and condemn others, remember you cannot see the beam in your own eyes.

Excuse me Mr, there are some misunderstanding and misinformation in your comment so let me complete it.
1- It was not for the period of 2 months but from 20-Nov-1979 to 04-Dec-1979(15 days).
2- Jordan or Egypt where not involved in the action.
3- Saudi Army and Pakistani commandos carried out the operation
4- The three GIGN(French) commandos trained and equipped the Saudi forces and devised their attack plan, but did not take part in the action and did not set foot in the Mosque.(According to that of then GIGN commanding officer Christian Prouteau)
5- On 9 January 1980, 63 rebels were publicly beheaded in the squares of eight Saudi cities.

People like this should be given stringent and the harshest punishment and immediate death by firing squad to send out a strong message . It doesn’t matter what religion , caste, culture or section of the society he or she or any person belongs to. It doesn’t matter if she eats meat or not as well. Such acts should be punished and be strictly condemned by all. Sorry for the victims and their families who have to face troubled times because of a crazy lunatic .may god give them strength to go through this difficult time . Top of that pollute around saying things are against thier belief and has to change to meet thier belief system makes people get angry. So many Jews Buddhist Hindus Sikhs lived in west over 100 years with peace well integrated life with west and contribute d like anyone else without milking the free welfare like these refugees do. Most of them are pakis Afghan Somali who messing the peaceful life of the west. It is sad but true. That is why such hate and frustration of this individual may have caused to take such terrible action. Again I am sad what he did killing innocent people but all we can do is pray. God is kind and merciful.

Sadly, you are ABSOLUTLEY correct. Uk is spending millions just keeping tab on these people. The problem is that they never mix with the society wherever they go. They creat a group, community, area and city of their own and live in it. Remember Tilak nagar in Jayanagar 4th T Block in Bangalore? There are more Indians(that includes Indian muslims) in UK society than Muslims in general. But you rarely hear anything about them. When new currency notes were introduced, they were coated with beef fat. Hindus protested; government didnt care. When flu vaccine was introduced, muslims protested because it was made in chick embryo and hala procedures were not followed!! The government bend therules just to accommodate a section of society. As a consequence, any supermakret meat in britain is halal unless written otherwise. Hope India doesnt reach this state.

Guy is Australian Equivalent of Ku Klux Klan...we have few of these Character's in US...especially in South...they offered support to Donald Trump during his election but he refused...

Here is brief explanation of KKK...

Six Confederate veterans from Pulaski, Tennessee created the original Ku Klux Klan on December 24, 1865, shortly after the Civil War, during the Reconstruction of the South. The name was formed by combining the Greek kyklos (κύκλος, circle) with clan. The group was known for a short time as the "Kuklux Clan".
