Mangaluru, Mar 9: Milagres College celebrated its 9th Annual Day at the Milagres Jubilee Hall on Saturday, March 9.
Federation of Indian Export Organisations former chairman Walter D’Souza was the chief guest. In his inaugural address, D’Souza said that 74 percent of people in India are literate but the same number was illiterate when the country got independence.
“The later generation understood the value of education and its importance to lead a decent and disciplinary lifestyle. But later the trend changed and education became public. The colleges converted into subject based education centers and they gave only importance to text book oriented education in a particular subject. Students failed to learn discipline and the proper usage of time which is very important in an individual’s life. Only through discipline a person can achieve success,” he stressed.
“Compared to developed western countries the youth of India are far behind in time sense. We should change this mentality. Success comes with hard work. So for achieving something in life we need to become disciplinary individuals first. Secondly, we should have a mentality for hard work. I think colleges are the best places to know these things. I congratulate the students and staff of the Milagres College because they stand best in social values and academic achievements,” he added.
Correspondent of Milagres Educational Institutions, Fr Valerian D'Souza in his presidential address said, “Our College is doing very well in academic and non academic subjects. The students and staff with their achievements are always upholding the name of the college. Students cannot limit the learning process only to text books. Classrooms cannot teach everything to students especially in the subject of life and lifestyle. They should learn it from their house, society and surrounding. Only learning is not enough for life. Students should shape themselves to become value filled individuals.”
The programme commenced with a prayer song. Fr Michael Santhumayor, college principal welcomed the gathering. Cassin Rodrigues, vice principal, presented the annual report of the college for the academic year. College magazine ‘Miracle 2019', was unveiled at the event.
Eva Manorama, faculty of commerce and coordinator of cultural association rendered the vote of thanks. The cultural programme commenced thereafter.
