Dubai: NRI lady's passport allegedly torn by Mangaluru International Airport staff

Daijiworld Media Network - Dubai (MS)

Dubai, Feb 14: According to a man, a native of Kerala, working in Dubai, his wife's passport was allegedly deliberately torn by the airport security staff at Mangaluru International Airport to prevent her from boarding the flight to Dubai, as per the report appeared in Gulf News, UAE’s leading daily.

On February 3, Rubeena Hashim (28) arrived at the Mangaluru international airport along with her two children Fathima, aged four and Noora, an eight-month-old baby from her native place of Kerala. She was to board the flight to Dubai to join her husband, Mohammad (33), who works as a public relations officer in a trading company at Al Tawar in Dubai.

Rubeena with Mohammed and children

Rubeena was shocked to see her passport torn from its seams at the check in counter. She had checked the same before leaving her home and the same was checked again by the security at the entrance gate of the Mangaluru international airport.

According to Mohammad, husband of Rubeena, her passport was intact when they left home and this could have happened only at the airport.

Recalling the chain of events, Mohammad said that Rubeena gave the passports and flight tickets of her and the children to the security officer at the entrance of the airport. She was guided by the same security person to fetch a stroller for her children. When Rubeena was back with the stroller, the passports and tickets were handed back to her by the security officer and Mohammad says that during the intervening period Rubeena's passport was tampered with.

When Rubeena got the check-in counter the ground staff told her that she could not travel as her passport is damaged.

Mohammad says, "If Rubeena's passport was damaged, she would not have been able to enter the airport itself as the same is checked by the security officer at the entrance,"

After repeated pleading with the authorities, the airport staff made her to sign a waiver stating that if any problem is encountered in Dubai because of the damaged passport, the Mangaluru airport authority will not be responsible for the same.

The ordeal of Rubeena did not end there. The airport staff further complicated the situation by saying that the undertaking letter written by Rubeena was not worded correctly. Fellow passengers, who were boarding the same flight, had to chip in and help Rubeena write the letter in the correct format as she had to manage two toddlers, who were throwing tantrums as the mother was unable to pay attention to them.

After all the inhumane approach of the airport staff at the Mangaluru international airport in dealing with Rubeena, she reached Dubai. The Dubai airport security staffs were very considerate and just asked her to get her passport replaced as soon as possible.

Mohammad, husband of Rubeena has raised a complaint about the whole episode with the Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi, who have promptly forwarded the said letter to the Mangaluru international airport authorities.

Mohammad says, "Authorities at my own country should have handled the situation in a much better manner considering the fact that my wife was travelling with two toddlers. Now I expect them to at least give an explanation to my complaint on their behaviour with my wife at the airport."

On inquiry about the complaint raised by Mohammad, the Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi says, "This appears to be a one off case. No such complaint has been previously received by this embassy. In this case the matter has been referred to the concerned authorities and the complainant is being kept in the loop.”

Guys, Just go get a life.

First of all this is not even a story that should make a headline. Secondly, without a proper investigation, which clearly proves who’s guilty or at fault, one should neither report such things, nor judge anyone.

This could be done by anyone. Ex: The kids (by accident while playing?) the lady herself, ( May be not wanting to go see her Husband?) the family of the lady or her Husband (May be they don’t like her ?) Airport Staff ( either by an error or purposefuly? ) and so on.

So if such things happen in the future, first go and report, let the authorities investigate, once proven - only then go and publish for awareness purposes.

Until the next time we meet again, peace and happy Valentine’s Day.

    Cheers

I wanted to write the same thing but I couldn't for obvious reasons...………………..

There was an family here in Kuwait whom I knew.

They went together on a holiday and the husband left early due to some work reasons.

The wife and the daughter arrived at the airport two weeks later only for the counter staff to tell them that the wife's passport did not have the residence page as it was neatly taken out.

Of course it didn't take long for the wife to do her math, after which she called his employer and got him to expedite her new visa. Turns out that this guy had got hooked by a nice young hottie who coincidently was also married.

Comments flying left and right, and against each other...…….

Am trying to put some things into perspective.....

The security officer at the security gate checks the first page of the passport where the photo of the passenger is and where the details of the passenger; name, date of birth, etc., is mentioned to verify details on the ticket; he/she does not go through the entire passport.

The check in personnel on the other hand go through the passenger's passport to verify that the passenger has valid visa to exit India and enter the destination country prior to checking the passenger onto the flight.
The immigration personnel also go through the passenger's passport to verify that the passenger has valid visa to exit India and enter the destination country prior to letting the passenger exit the immigration area.

So here, there is the miniscule possibility that the Security officer may not have noticed the damage to the passport which the check-in counter staff discovered.

I have on many occasions made small talk with the check-in counter staff as to why they need to go through the passenger's passport since I felt that it was the duty of the immigration officers to do so, and they replied that it is the airline's responsibility to return the passenger if upon arriving at the destination airport the passenger has been refused entry for obvious reasons.

Then lastly I can't fathom how her husband who is in Dubai could vouch that his spouse's passport was intact when she left her home in Kerala to proceed to the airport.
"According to Mohammad, husband of Rubeena, her passport was intact when they left home and this could have happened only at the airport."

This happened to me recently (not in India), my wife's Passport was found torn the similar fashion and we came to know only when the boarding counter guy questioned about the damaged passport. Passport was in perfect condition and checked in 3 counters after we checked in.
We were allowed to travel to Qatar back we informed Qatar imigration they just asked us to change the passport ASAP.
Passport will damage if left inside a car(summer season)
Its the quality of Indian passport in Question. Govt of India need to rectify this else many will face similar trouble.

Passport might have been already slightly torn during the passenger entry into airport which the security at entrance might not have noticed. Once in check in counter, the same page might have further torn for which the airport officials have asked for undertaking. After passing all these things, passenger herself might have fully torn the page to blame the airport officials.

The same has happened a few years back when the authorities did not allow a maid to board the flight I helped by writing the letter and giving my UAE ID copy as assurance. How a maid can write a letter? and the authorities themselves won't help to write but some good samaritan from the passengers have to do it. The maid did not have maid visa which is a valid point for them to argue, but she was going to the same owner's relatives house (sponsor in visit visa was same) where she was working in India. Since I knew her very well I assured them it's not human trafficking but a genuine reason. Taking maid visa is costly and sometimes whoever came under maid visa, won't work until their visa expiry because of many reasons which are a loss to the sponsor. Even though sometimes the authorities have the right to question, they should also help the uneducated, the elders, the children and mothers with babies accompanied. After all, it's because of the people travel through this airport they have a job.

@sudheer, mangalore, Congress rule was almost 62 years. After India's independence banks were never been ruined. From 2014 to as of today Banks looted without overseeing bank affairs as i witness from 2014 to as of today. Will you please show to David Pais and to me which bank runs exclusively with deposits and without giving loans. Congress government did not take minimum deposits and was running with zero balance S/B A/C .
Presently in the Chaiwala Prime Minister's tenure there should have minimum balance in the Bank, more than 3 transactions a day from ATM charges are levied by the banks to the customers. Retired personnel are not replaced. Youths are roaming without Jobs. The world touring Prime Minister didn't take stock of recovering Loans. Dr. Raghuram Rajan gave a list of NPA's to the Chaiwala P.M. & he never looked into the factual matters written by him. After demonetisation industries were closed, people are jobless and in the Banks NPA's arose. Today don't blame UPA or the Congress.
Administration is not a trial and error applying methods however it requires prudence administrative capacity. It is not a Chai and Pakoda selling work. History learned man is RBI Governor, Law Minister is a Finance Minister. Two ministers are sick and Grossly this Government is paralysed in sickness and cow matters.

I think it is an isolated case and security staff at the entrance are generally good and they are doing their job. May be the passport page holder pin was weak and snapped off...or kids might have tampered....some times holding many things in hand may put pressure on passport booklets. Sometimes without noticing things at our hands we blame others. I really can not find a reason to blame security person or any mischief by them! This is not the first time with international passengers specially at Mangalore Airport and also the trouble and difficulty faced by ONE particular community. All civilians must alert our State Government to trace out the actual epicenter of such criminals and their God fathers.

Catch them from the route and smash out from the department for ever. We South Kanarians not require such communal group or such atmosphere.

Below statement made by Mr. Mohammad supersedes all the possibilities PP was damaged before.
" Mohammad says, "If Rubeena's passport was damaged, she would not have been able to enter the airport itself as the same is checked by the security officer at the entrance,""

I presume buy mistake it could have happened by the security staff while handling 3 passports and tickets. To cover up the case he helped them to get the trolley as mentioned in the article. Else I have never heard or its unusual, any security staff leaving his duties of checking the documents than helping to get the trolleys.

Other possibility after security to check in, during the screening of baggage process, handling 2 toddlers is Herculaneum job. No matter how many times one fly, from departure point (from our home) till you reach your home at destination always there is some unknown nervousness (at least for me) hahaha

Mr. Mohammed understand your plight and action is appropriate. Same time security guard should not loose his job if it is not his fault, moreover for helping your family as well. The case should be thoroughly investigated and closed.

"Else I have never heard or its unusual, any security staff leaving his duties of checking the documents than helping to get the trolleys. "

Sir, in other news channels its reported that the airport entrance security officials asked the lady to go and get a trolley for kids, the security officials didn't personally go and get the trolleys for the lady & kids.

So the complainant believes in this intervening period passports were mishandled/damaged by the security officials.

Wondering, in order to prove their innocence, why the airport officials have NOT been able to produce CCTV footage of the lady & kids airport entrance to immigration

Agreed but we cannot jump into conclusion. Mr. Mohammed and Family should get justice, same time Security guard should not be penalized if he is not at fault. I dont think he has any personal problem with family. Thousands travel every day, I am a frequent traveler staff is very good in Mangalore Airport. Yes I have noticed they stop some people and question its everywhere in the world now a days. Even they frisk no matter who you are in some airports and no one has daring to ask why?

I quote from the News :Mohammad says, "If Rubeena's passport was damaged, she would not have been able to enter the airport itself as the same is checked by the security officer at the entrance," Unquote.

THE AIRPORT AUTHORITIES CAN CHECK THE CCTV WHETHER THEY SHOWED THE PASSPORT TO THE SECURITY AND WHETHER THE SECURITY HAS SEEN ALL THE FOUR PASSPORTS AND ITS NAMES . IF SO IT IS VISIBLE IN THE CCTV WHETHER IT WAS TORN OR NOT. IF NOT TORN THE IMMIGRATION OFFICIALS ARE FULLY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SAME INCIDENT.

SUPPOSE IT WAS TORN MOHAMMAD AND HIS FAMILY ARE TOTALLY RESPONSIBLE. FOR THIS INCIDENT.

IT IS MY OBSERVATIONS FROM THE DAIJIWORLD NEWS BLOG..

I this case you have been given to fly by air and supposedly all of you are returned back by the Dubai Airport itself who is responsible???!!!

Hence some rift / heated talks might have been occurred however everything was smooth for the both Airport Authorities as well as to the Passengers.

Dear Mr SP Shetty , Dubai, why you should "feeling bad for the staff"
As per the news statement "Mohammad says, "If Rubeena's passport was damaged, she would not have been able to enter the airport itself as the same is checked by the security officer at the entrance,"
It is 100% true statement. I have once noticed at Mangalore Airport security personnel stopped a passenger at the entrance itself saying name spelled in Ticket is not matching with passport. Wrong alpabhat was instead of “S” ticket issuing counter put “Z”. He purchased the ticket at airport, urgent one. In this circumstances, if a passport itself was damaged, how they allowed her enter the airport?
Authority should take serous note of the compliant. Airport security personnel do not hold any authority to tamper with passport. If they have not tampered with the passport, how they allowed her enter the airport with tampered/damaged passport?

Dear Mr.S.P Shetty, Unable to understand what it made you to be soft-corner towards security personnel. Today it is for Ms. Rubeena Hashim, tomorrow for you or me. What is the harm to put forward to media. These type of thing can be fought and get justice only through media.one letter compliant directly goes to the bin. Mangalore international Air port is number one , and hope least requirement of CCTV may be available. Now Indian Embassy involved in this matter, so let concern authority investigate and find the truth.
Once again same question to you "If the passport was damaged before, how the so called security personnel allowed her to enter the airport"?
How much pain any harassment she might have encounters with two toddler in hand. One more harassment party was the check-in counter staff. They think because of them we are able to fly. They try their maximum to find fault with your baggage for over weight by 100 grms also.

The immigration officers at the airport are very arrogant. It seems like they are doing a favour on us. Not welcoming at all. Especially with the early morning flights reaching the airport, the immigration officers treat the passengers as if they were woken up by the passengers'. They don't care if a passenger is traveling with a baby or old people. They still have to stay in the queue. There is not even a ray of the smile on these officers.
The airport director should do something about this if they want to increase the passenger flow through this airport. Having said all this, I really appreciate the safety measures taken at the airport though.
