Mangaluru, Jan 25: Locals at Pavoor Uliya raided illegal sand mining units at Valchil dakke and surrounding areas and detained boats used for the purpose on Friday, January 25.

A heated argument ensued between illegal sand extractors and the locals forcing illegal sand miners to leave back their boats and vacate the place. Locals later informed police and the department of Geology and Mining about the raid.

The river gets dug deeper by sand extractors every day. As there are many illegal sand mining units operating in and around Pavoor Uliya, people are afraid that the island will disappear if sand mining continues for few more years.
