Bhatkal, Dec 14: The police here took into custody two persons after finding that they were carrying foreign currency notes worth lacs of rupees by train. They were arrested on the night of Wednesday December 12.

The arrested persons were Hassan Shabbar, and Umaid Ahmed, residents of Masma Street Bhatkal.

The police got information that the two persons mentioned above were carrying foreign currency in a train that was moving towards Mangaluru from Goa. During the checking, they arrested the two. As the accused did not give proper information during questioning, they conveyed information to the assistant director in the department of revenue intelligence, Mangaluru.

Deputy director of the department, Shreyas, arrived at the police station here with a team of officials on Thursday. The team questioned the accused. The accused were found to be in possession of foreign currency including euros, pound sterling, dirhams, swiss francs, Oman dollar etc, totally worth about Rs 80 lac.

The officials of the revenue intelligence department have taken over custody of the accused and taken them away to Mangaluru for further questioning.

A team of officials comprising deputy superintendent of police, Valentine D'Souza, circle police inspector, Ganesh K L, police sub inspector, Kusumadhar and others were involved with the operation.
