Kundapur, Dec 11: Vidhan Parishad member and senior Congress leader Pratap Chandra Shetty has been elected the new speaker of Vidhan Parishad unopposed.

He had served as MLA of Kundapur Vidhan Sabha constituency without interruption from 1983 to 1999 and served people since 2003 till now as Vidhan Parishad member. He is known as the strict leader who used to give priority through government officials that pro people programmes reach those who are in acute poverty.

Pratap Shetty who was born to Huyyaru Patel Hirianna Shetty and Kolkebail Gulabi Shetty in September, 1949 and was known as the ‘Tiger of Huyyaru’, is a BA degree holder. He worked for Vijaya Bank, Pune and Shivamogga after obtaining BA degree, but gave up his job after his father’s death and returned to his home town.

He joined as the primary member of Indian National Congress and started his political career. He later became president of Kundapur Vidhan Sabha block Youth Congress, district Youth Congress chief secretary, district Congress president, KPCC vice president, AICC member, MLA and Vidhan Parishad member for a long time.

The position of speaker in the JD(S)-Congress coalition government obtained without any competition unopposed is a huge honour for his seniority and experience.
