Mangaluru: NITK student commits suicide, jumps from 6th floor

Mangaluru Nov 17: A 20-year-old engineering student committed suicide by jumping from the Mechanical department building at NITK campus here on Saturday, November 17.

The deceased has been identified as Anand Pathak, resident of Maharashtra. Anand Pathak was a student of third year mechanical. He was also part of musical club. Anand Pathak jumped off from 6th floor of mechanical department building.

As per sources, a professor attached to Mechanical department had threatened Anand who had attendance shortage, saying that he won’t become an engineer and he will fail in the exam. It is said that professor continuously snubbed Anand which made him take this extreme step.

It is also said, this is not the first time a student committed suicide at NITK. As many as three students have committed suicide before, due to alleged harassment from their professors.

It really hurt to see a kind soul leaving so early, I am also engineering at ramiah.Mech branch.Main fault goes to professors for being so rude,I also heard Anand was guilty of his mistake and was on his knees.The only fault of Anand is he reacted wrongly.We lost a gem.#Rip

Proper investigation to be carried out, If this kind of sensitivity found in student proper counselling should have done with the help of friends/ teachers. Very unfortunate incident strict action to be taken after proper investigation.

Heart cries to see a sweet humble and jovial soul disappeared. RIP Anand. Hearty condolences to his grieving parents and his friends. May the Almighty bestow peace to the departed soul and give courage to the family to bear such a deep loss.

Professors, Wake up. Don’t dominate the students. Please treat them as your own children, have some emotions. All the way Leaving their parents, coming here to study. You all are their parents, friends and mentors. This incident will haunt the professor till his life. How you will console their parents. Feel the pain they are going through.

No need to snub them instead advise them in advance before the semester rather spoiling their year. NITK (Surathkal) students surely are the smart one in academics and other activities. Anand must have missed the classes due to club /college activities. Have some consideration. Management surely have to look into the matter and give justice to the departed soul. Timely counsellingc required first to the professors and also to the students.

Blame the parents not the professor. What he was doing during class hours. Was he roaming around @ college campus? If he was not interested in engineering why the parents forced him? It's unfortunate that a young life has been snuffed out. We do not know what the teacher had in mind when he denied admission to write exams. But he could have been a little more lenient for two reasons: one, he was academically bright..second, he was in music club and representing only his college...om shanthi ANAND..

This brings back memory of a professor of the best college in Bombay who gave me faulty apparatus in lab & refused to grade jouranal for stopping his tutions. More over theMarathi professor had the guts to come over to my table & tell me why he did it & this kind of guts came from his caste status & knowing no one cud touch him becoz of that I was told later. At that time & tender age I was in tears in the lab , totally blank, contemplating either hitting the professor there & going to jail. There are few black sheep in this profession who need urgent yearly grading themselves of course there are more of the good ones too whom we worship even a decade later.

The professor should have let the student attend the examination. If that attendance was really so important, then the impact of the missed classes would have been reflected in the student's marks. Bullying a student like this is certainly not the solution. I know for a fact that a slight shortage of attendance is no big deal and is usually excused. Further, I know that most students have no problem in attending classes that are truly interesting and informative and handled well.

I m shocked as step taken by Anand.
I know him from his primary school. He was very brilliant, disciplined, as he was also my college student IIT batch. I never heard any irregularity about him. He was multi talented as he is my daughter's batch mate.

In this case I blame the student for committing suicide. Who is right or who is wrong is not a issue. Even if a guy does not become an Engineer, life will never end. I feel sorry for the parents who nurtured this boy for 20 years.

Sure Charles you have every right to blame the student, since you are not involved, easy to point fingers. But just think, what environment are we creating by such blame games. 3 students committing suicide means, that NITK si not doing any corrective actions. Do they implement a Suicide helpline in spirit? Do they sensitize students and professors on how to handle such matters? Do they have counselors, who actively interact with list of students/professors who indulge or show signs of potential suicide behaviour? Maybe its time to move on, and implement these steps in spirit and save the future of such kids/professors.

This rule of 75% Attendence is completely BS and should be removed. I'm from NITK and believe me we learn much more about the subject outside the classes. Almost everybody in the campus is learning from the Internet. If you want students to attend the classes regularly then make sure that your Professors are good enough to make students attend classes with Joy and not Forcefully.

I'm a BTech in Mechanical Engineering 2015 Batch NITK.

There are only 3-4 professors in the entire department who could say this particular words. Rest are really professional and helpful.

What I noticed during my NITK days is that , right from day one most of the students are only concerned about the package they would recieve in placements.

Time to think about our education system. No, doubt it has become a production line for corporate sector.

I was a student in the same boat as Anand, and I was fully aware that shortage of attendance wouldn't let me pass through college. Being in 3rd year would mean that so was Anand. It gets difficult when you realize that you won't be handed a degree with your batch mates, that every one of your friends will have a headstart at life before you.

One should take this as motivation instead of giving up hope. But circumstances aren't the same for everyone, maybe he had a bunch of backlogs that he got intimidated, maybe he was too scared to face someone if he failed. Not knowing the circumstances it is foolish to blame someone or something. No one alone can be at fault. Whatever it be, the people around us can see our mindset change and they are the ones that can help themselves or guide in seeking help.

I believe that system is there to help. Attendance is and should be mandatory. Professors should inform students and send them for counselling. Had the system not been in place, maybe I wouldn't be where I am today, maybe Anand would have been alive.

In my school days in convent school teachers are so strict I need to take a beating as part of our curriculum
Today I grew old and my miss my teachers some already departed this world. I carry the value of for them to date and thanks for making me understand the word 'discipline' that I had passed on to my children.
I am very disappointed with this suicide. If he paid attention to his professor for two more years he would have been on his own feet.

For all the negative comments: - "Please note admission to IIT's & NIT's is purely on merit unlike the umpteen Engineering colleges which sell seats to average students. These students are intelligent and talented. This particular student was representing the institution for some events and in general they are given the attendance for those days of absence. Moreover the shortage was only 2 or 3 % .

@Student NITK,First of all the student is there to study,and when he misses the important classes and is absent for many times,it is professors duty to warn him and tell the naked truth.Because professor has continuesouly pressured him as you say or missed some classes ?he need not commit suecide.He can admit his absence and try to learn better.or inform his parents about professors pressure.The lecturer will not bother if student is doing his studys without failure in class.even he is weak ,ask him what to do next.Professor too can summen his family about his fail in classes or bad notes.However I doubt,prof.must have threatened him to tell parents ,so he felt bad or guilty .and committed suecide for not fulfilling his parents wishes.what he was doing missing classes?When he cant continue his studies ,find hard,tell parents,change the subjects and do something else.But not suecide.Now parents are sad and feel lost.Their heart is broken.Heartfelt sympathy to them.However he was not counselled properly.May his soul rest in peace.

The professor should have been a little more understanding. There is a way to solve these problems.
Anand was a multi talented, intelligent and disciplined student who was scoring above 8.5 grade points. The students put 3 to 4 years of efforts for getting into IIT's and NIT's. Do you think they will just let go the efforts in vain.
Try to understand the impact on the student if he is threatened of failure for missing a handful classes .
I know this fact because my son is his classmate and know him very well.
I could not eat or sleep since yesterday till now consoling my son who is traumatized by the incident.
Our prayers are required for Anand's parents at this time. Please be more sensitive while commenting.

After taking admission into professional college, many a times students suddenly find the freedom away from parents and feel free to enjoy life instead of concentrating on studies. When they are confronted by their teachers / professors, they think that the teachers are at fault. Ultimately they get frustrated and end up this way. The step taken is not right but young mind works this way.

There is no fault of professor. Parent send such students to become engineers without really assessing the aptitude or interest of children. In any professional college, concentration on studies is utmost importance which the college management tries to implement.

Probably this student would have been better off if he was allowed to take his own decision.
