Udupi, Nov 15: "The contribution of the government toward the co-operative sector is very minimal. Only the co-operative sector is carrying out the waiving of loans and interest. Commercial banks are not co-operating with the government's order of loan waiver of farmers. However, we have given all the accounts to the government," said M N Rajendra Kumar, chairman of Karnataka State Cooperative Marketing Federation (KSCMF).

Rajendra Kumar was speaking after inaugurating the 65th All India Cooperative Week, organized under the joint auspices of KSCMF, Udupi District Cooperative Union and Badagubettu Credit Cooperative Society at Ammanni Ramanna auditorium in the city.

Continuing his inaugural address, Rajendra Kumar said, "Today the government is not believing the cooperative sector. The central and state governments deposit their money only in commercial banks and not cooperative organizations. The governments want us to do all their work, but they do not believe us. Governments have given numerous grants to commercial banks. However, their contribution to the cooperative sector is a big zero. Cooperative sector has not grown due to anyone's contribution. This sector has grown on its own strength and is giving service to the society as well as doing the works of the government. If the government gives cooperation, then the cooperative sector will strengthen further."

"Undivided district of Dakshina Kannada is the only district in the whole of India to have repaid 100% agricultural loans since the last 23 years. The function of the cooperative sector should not be limited to taking deposits, giving loans and recovery of loans. It should find some newness. We have to grow the cooperative sector further by keeping politics at bay and become a model for the whole nation," added Rajendra Kumar.

Sanjeeva Kanchan of Badagubettu Cooperative Society welcomed the gathering. Jayakar Shetty Indrali, chief manager of society did the introduction. The programme was compered by Naveen K.

Sri Rajendra Kumar is right. Central and state governments, particularly the govt at the centre, have a bias towards co-operatives. They are treated with contempt. Co-operatives have been blamed for amassing tax evaders money. On scrutiny, it emerges that this perception is wrong. Co-operatives are really helping the poor and middle class people in villages and semi-urban areas. Even in cities they cater to the less fortunate. Majority, or most, of their members hardly have any taxable income except some who are on the threshold margin of tax liability. The govt should realise this and should understand that co-operatives are best institutions for financial inclusion of the masses. Their accounts under Jan dhan yojana are nothing but flop. But co-operative savings accounts are real instruments for financial inclusion of masses in villages and semi-urban areas.
