Udupi, Nov 10: “Tipu Sultan should not be seen as a king, but an inspiration for campaign against colonialism,” said Government First Grade College Tenkanidiyoor professor Dr Jayaprakash Shetty.

He addressed the gathering at Hazrath Tipu Jayanti programme at Atal Bihari Vajapayee auditorium, Rajathadri held on Saturday by district administration, zilla panchayat, department of Kannada and culture, Udupi.

“In history, all the kings have fought to protect their kingdoms in history and experienced violence. Tipu had fought against colonialism. Therefore, he should be identified as a human being,” said Dr Shetty.



“People belonging to all religions were holding positions in his cabinet and army. Tipu implemented several programmes against superstition. He gave priority to commercial crops. 60% of the land in Mysuru came under irrigation during his rule. His developments should be remembered during ownership and redistribution of land,” he said.

Deputy commissioner Priyanka Mary Francis inaugurated the programme. District SP Laxman Nimbaragi, additional DC Vidyakumari, district panchayat assistant secretary Nagesh Raikar, district Vakf advisory committee president K P Ibrahim were present.

Kannada and culture department assistant director Chandrashekar welcomed everyone. Technical supervisor Poornima compered the programme and proposed the vote of thanks.

Minority students who secured highest marks in SSLC and PUC were presented prizes. A singing and Dhaf programme on Tipu were held.

    In a civilised society Tippu Sultan is not a inspirational figure. He was cruel on Hindus and Catholics.
    Account those people he killed or put into Jail and terrorised. It is not worth celebrating his birthday.
