Mangaluru: Government plans logistic park - trucks lining up highway might disappear

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Nov 10: Being a port city, Mangaluru was in need of logistic park in place of truck terminal proposed earlier. The government has finally made up its mind to create a logistic park here in view of the fact that a large number of large-sized trucks have been moving around the port and industrial areas.

The logistic park is supposed to support the growth of railway, port and airport through improved connectivity. Therefore, more investment is likely to flow into the area of industry.

In the past, a truck terminal was proposed to be built with private participation by Devaraj Urs Truck Terminals Corporation. The government now feels that logistic park equipped with modern technology would be a better option. The project requires a minimum of ten acres of land, and New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) has already provided five acres. Currently, the government is looking at an alternative site and holding discussions with the port trust. Although there is enough space inside APMC Yard here, APMC is reluctant to the idea of having this park in its premises, it is said.

Currently, about 5,000 trucks visit the city everyday and hundreds of heavy trucks move to the industrial area. The trucks are lined up on the side of the highway giving rise to traffic congestion, pollution, and obstacles for locals etc in areas like Baikampady, Kulai, and Panambur etc. Once the park comes up, this problem will cease to exist.

State minister for large scale industry and ITBT, K J George, said that the government has found that building of modern logistic park would suit the city better. He said that the government is prepared to set up the park in ten acres of land, and discussions would be held with NMPT on the land requirement. He said that there is proposal to set up this park in special economic zone too.

The logistic park can accommodate about 400 trucks. It will have rest room, toilet, water facility, a moderate canteen, minor repair centre, emergency service, banking, container depot etc.
