Rahul quotes Mahatma Gandhi to criticise tigress Avni’s killing

Mumbai, Nov 5(DC): Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Monday targeted the Centre and Maharashtra government over the killing of tigress Avni last week.

“The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated,” Rahul Gandhi tweeted quoting Mahatma Gandhi.

Tigress Avni is believed to have been responsible for the deaths of 13 people in Maharashtra in the past two years. She was killed in Maharashtra’s Yavatmal district on Friday.

The killing has sparked massive outrage and raised a debate over tiger conservation efforts.

Union Minister Maneka Gandhi also slammed her party BJP's government in Maharashtra and termed the killing of tigress a "ghastly murder" and a "straight case of crime". She also vowed to take up the case "legally, criminally as well as politically".

Maneka’s reaction drew a sharp reaction from Maharashtra Forest Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar who said, "If she (Maneka Gandhi) thinks any tiger or tigress should not be killed even if it is a man-eater, then the decision should be taken by the Centre."?

"She (Gandhi) loves animals. She is, however, Minister for Women and Child Development. I have to consider the women who have been killed by the tigress," Mungantiwar added.

Tigress Avni, officially known as T1, was shot dead by sharp-shooter Asgar Ali on Friday night.

The tigress is survived by her two 10 months old cubs.

There must be limit for politics. In any thing and every thing these politicians try to get some political mileage. If a tiger goes on killing people what had to be done......just sit quiet and allow it to go on killing spree....??????

the debate is not about killing tigress avni, it's about the officer who killed his name.
many sanghis were opposing killing of tigress avni, only because of the person who killed it was a muslim and his name is asgar ali, then these sanghis were calm down only because it was happened in maharashtra and ruling party is bjp, now after this statement by rahul gandhi, all sanghis are in shame and justifying killing of tigress avni.
the fact is simple, in each and everything sanghis find either religion or either congress. bhakts never change.

@Mohammed Kundapur Qatar,I dont support your saying bringing religion in this matter ,neither killing the Tigress.Whoever killed the tigress was a person belonging to a team to kill the tigress.what difference it makes shooter was a muslim or a any other religion. One shouldnt simply pick up the problems where it is not needed.I too was the first who opposed the killing animal, because there are hardly any tigers in the world. They could have saved the tigress with the cubs ,catching in a cage and transported it elsewhere or kept in a zoo or other forests.Tigress is not responsible for cutting the forest, and making it as a living to people.she will her cubes to feed, seeks food.Govt.should also leave animals for her living in forest.Instead people go hunting illegal ,leave back no other wild animals.I t is not prooved it was the same tigress maneater was.might be other ones?sure when tiger has killed the people then kindly just cage her and takeout from that place and bring elsewhere.

The damn animal is a MAN-EATER it doesn't matter whether you keep it in a zoo or a 5 star hotel and feed it with all delicate meats it will still kill a human being at any given opportunity. I hope you understand what makes a tiger a MAN-EATER.

You are worried about the 2 cubs left behind by the damn man-eater tigress, now who will worry about the tens of dependents be it children, wives, husbands, parents etc., etc., of the 13 humans who have been eaten by this monster.

The monster needed to be shot and killed nothing more nothing less.

I am supporting here Maharashtra Forest Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar, who had given his consent to kill man eater tigress Avni, who have been responsible for the deaths of 13 people. Well done. These politicians are sitting with body guards, enjoying all luxuries and safety at common citizens expense.
