Moodbidri, Oct 18: The news and video that went viral on social media about the mysterious transformation of earth into water bed and giving a sponge like effect at Bommalagudde, Kadandale near here is unearthed and is known that this is an artificial shaking that has occurred due to the stone mining.

Giving the explanation of the strange phenomenon, K P Santhosh Shetty, a prominent person of the locality said to the scribes, "Forbeson Company was operating an asphalt crushing plant here from 1994 to 2013 and was closed due to the protest by the locals. The company had filled the 25 feet deep trench that was created due to the incessant mining of the area for more than 19 years with the asphalt powder as per the court's order.

“As the company did not mix the mud with the asphalt powder while filling the excavated land, the asphalt granules did not stick to each other. During the rain the rain water has formed a layer on the stone beneath the asphalt powder and the asphalt powder has formed a separate layer, which is floating on the water.

"This phenomenon is causing danger to both the cattle as well the people who frequent this place. Now the number of people visiting the spot has increased as the news has gone viral on electronic, print and social media and this has caused concern to the locals. There is a grave danger for people or cattle walking on the spongy surface getting trapped or sucked inside the earth. However, it is not right to mix this phenomenon with other strange happenings around the world and glorifying it. This is a man made issue,” he said.
