BJP gives 24 hours to Kerala government to resolve Sabarimala row

Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 15 (IANS): With the Sabarimala Hindu temple set to open on Wednesday for monthly puja, Kerala BJP President P.S. Sreedharan Pillai warned the Left government to resolve the issue of women visitors or face "severe consequences".

The BJP, RSS, Congress and Hindu groups are up in arms against a September 28 Supreme Court ruling lifting the ban on entry of women in the 10-50 age group into the temple, saying it will breach age-old traditions.

Pillai, who led a huge protest from Pandalam on Monday, told the gathering of women and others in front of the state Secretariat here that if the Pinarayi Vijayan government failed to find a solution to the controversy, "then things will be bad".

"We give him 24 hours to resolve the issue. If he fails to do it, then he should be prepared to see a different type of protest from us. We will make it very clear that we are not trying to make political capital through this campaign," said Pillai.

Meanwhile, the Travancore Devasom Board (TDB), the custodian of the temple, said that if any woman in the banned age group turned up at the temple, they would be doing it only for publicity.

Kannur resident Reshma Nishant told the media on Monday that she was fully geared to travel to the temple.

"I am undertaking all the penance for the visit. When I made my intent known on social media, a section abused me while another section applauded me. I am a Communist and at the same time a believer in God," she said.

At the temple town, the board which says that entry is banned for women between aged between 10 and 50 has not been removed.

Meanwhile, senior CPI-M leader and Industries Minister E.P. Jayarajan told the media on Monday that the Kerala government was duty bound to abide by the apex court directive.

"The state government will provide all the needed support and safety to all women who wish to come and pray at the temple," he said.

Senior CPI-M leader and Chairperson of the Kerala Women's Commission, M.C. Josephine, said that all those women desiring to go to the temple may pray at the shrine.

Leader of Opposition and Congress veteran Ramesh Chennithala said the BJP and RSS combine was trying to turn the Sabarimala issue into a problem area.

"The Centre is playing a double game as they are not coming out with an ordinance. We (Congress-led UDF) are fully with the believers and will go to any extent to protect the traditions of the temple," he said.

A meeting between TDB officials, the Pandalam royal family, representatives of the Sabarimala Tantri family and other Hindu organisations has been called by the TDB here on Tuesday.

The left government was foolish not to appeal the SC decision. BJP is using its usual devious tactics in the Sabarimala dispute to gain a foothold in Kerala politics.

In the "protesters' own country" every group is busy threatening every other group or Government of "severe consequences" if the demands are not met on something or the other. Every day.

The mindset is no different to a chronic disease.

The ruling on Sabarimala has been passed by the Supreme Court. The Kerala Government had no role to play in that decision.

So why exactly is the Government threatened by the BJP is not clear.

The restriction on entry of women into the Sabarimala Ayyappa temple is a recent phenomenon. With its rich history of non-Brahmin influences, historians argue the temple's past has more similarities with Buddhist traditions than Hindu ones.

The most significant turning point in the process of Hinduisation is the Sabarimala arson case of 1950.The temple has undergone significant ritual changes after the 1950 incident. One such significant change is the restriction on entry of women. The ban was enforced under Rule 3(b) of the Kerala Hindu Places of Public Worship (Authorisation of Entry) Rules, 1965.

The notion that this is a recent restriction finds resonance in the Kerala high court’s judgment. “Women used to visit the temple earlier. The Maharaja of Travancore accompanied by the Maharani (queen) and the Diwan had visited the temple in the Malayalam year of 1115 (1940). There was thus no strict prohibition for women to enter the Sabarimala temple in olden days,” the judgment read. “Both women below the age of menstruation and above the age of menstruation belong to the Sabarimala pilgrims.
The Hindu mobilisation generally called Nilakkal movement in the year of 1983 was an important episode in the Hinduisation process associated with Sabarimala. The Christian-oriented newspaper Deepika Daily, on March 25, 1983 reported that a granite cross was discovered by some workers from the government owned farming corporation land at Nilakkal. The place was 21 kms away from Sabarimala. Stories spread that the discovered cross was that of St. Thomas’s period. Devotees poured into the place. Religious practices began to be conducted. It irked the Hindu organisations and community leaders.Subsequently Nilakkal became a site of religious confrontation for months. The movement saw an unprecedented Hindu mobilisation in Kerala.
The BJP threat in Kerala are repetition of 'Niakkal' movement. Just Ayodhya in Kerala. Uttar Pradesh suffered from decades. Is Kerala next UP?

pillai must be put behind bars for contempt of SC order, as well as instigating violence and chaos for his political gain.

Vijayan must handle these elements with full force of power entrusted to him.

This is just a pressure tactics by BJP-RSS to corner Kerala govt. Kerala govt should uphold SC verdict and seek advice to apply SC verdict around the temple and if need be ask for army or commando deployment for any untoward incidents. Don't live in the past, live in the present and prepare yourself for the future. It's not your judgement and decision to say menstruating women are dirty, its gods plan creation and you have no say in it. You too have to come to the world through that dirt then how clean are you??????....

I wanted to write, but being not a Hindu, it is impertinent for me to comment on this subject. However, I never felt my mother, wife, sisters and daughters as unclean any time of their life. I really appreciate your view where you have written "It's not your judgement and decision to say menstruating women are dirty, its gods plan creation and you have no say in it. You too have to come to the world through that dirt then how clean are you". I really like what you said, keep up such impartial comment.
