Muscat: MCCP's Annual Cricket Day witnesses huge participation

Muscat, Nov 16: Mangalorean Catholic Centre of the Parish (MCCP), Muscat, organised its Annual Cricket Day on November 3. It was held at GPDCO cricket ground.

The programme commenced early in the day, with the registration of players at the venue. Vijay D’Cunha, the internal auditor and Jane Castelino, general secretary with the help of Shanthi D’Souza, Henry Rodrigues, Clifford Castelino, Linda D’Souza, Rinet Menezes and Molly Pinto ensured that all players are registered in order to form the competing teams for the four winner trophies. The four categories were children, ladies, men and seniors.

Terrance D’Souza, the sports secretary being the host of the day warmly welcomed all. Naveen Mascarehnas, vice president for Cultural, Spiritual and Community Services, led the gathering, invoking blessings from the almighty with a prayer. President Sunil Furtado called upon all the participants to play with their full ability and enthusiasm but not to leave out the sporting spirit. The executive committee of MCCP then ran a lap around the cricket ground with colourful balloons before releasing them to mark the inaugural of the tournament.

Dolly Gomes, very well-known and energetic sports personality in the Mangalorean community in Muscat, with the help of Jessie Pereira, a popular sports enthusiast and Suneel Menezes, secretary, Community Services, formed the teams and helped to conduct the matches in a very professional manner and within the time frame. Srinivas Prabhu, Kiran, Ritesh Salian and Chinna Rao, were the match umpires. Vikas Fernandes was the official scorer. Terence D’Souza along with Brian Currie, Naveen Mascarehnas, Praveen Serra and Norman Joel kept the crowd entertained with their lively commentary. Philomena Saldanha, the spiritual secretary supported the event with first aid care. She also said the grace before meals.

There were several closely contested matches in all the four categories generating a lot interest among the spectators who had gathered in large numbers to witness the event. Sumptuous breakfast, lunch and snacks were served at the venue so that the matches continue uninterrupted throughout the day.

The winners of the below 40 years men’s category were led by Terrance D’Souza and included Ryan D’Souza, Pradeep D’Souza, Praveen Serra, Sharon Alva, Jason, Jaideep, Arun D’Souza, John Secundas, Hancy D’Souza, Sunil D’Souza, and Rajesh D’Costa.

Runners-up were Suneel Menezes - Captain, Loyson, Vikas Fernandes, Dilan, Sunil Cardoza, Noel, Nishon, Naveen D’Costa, Jeevan, Ashok and Denzil.

Best player in below 40 years men’s category was Hancy D’Souza.

In the category of senior men’s cricket, winners were Sunil Furtado - Captain, Sudhir, Alfred Rodrigues, John Peter, James Noronha, Agnel Dias, Prem Colaco, Gabriel D’Lima, Alfonso Rodrigues, Eugene Sequeira, Wilson and Clifford Castelino.

Runners-up were Michael Goveas - Captain, Francis Pinto, Joseph D’Souza, Lancy Barboza, Melwyn D’Souza, Lancy Saldanha, Rudolph, Anil, Joseph, Brian Currie, Praveen and Rolf.

Best player in seniors’ cricket was Rudolph.

In the ladies' cricket division, winners were Jane Castelino - Captain, Braina Pinto, Amanda D’Costa, Nirmala Fernandes, Molly Pinto, Meera Saldanha, Elveera Machado, Janet Rodrigues, Cynthia Lobo and Reshma Rodrigues.

Runners-up were Philomena Saldanha - Captain, Leena Pinto, Priya Menezes, Priya Quadros, Linda D’Souza, Rinet Menezes, Flavia D’Souza and Flavia Fernandes.

Best player in ladies cricket was Braina Pinto.

Children's Cricket winners were Tanish Saldanha and team. The runners-up were Andril Lobo and team.

The prizes were handed over by Dilip Correa, former president of MCCP and John Gonsalves former president and core committee member of MCCP. The event was organised with great professionalism by Sam Menezes and Terrance D’Souza with the help of all the team members of the executive committee of MCCP for the year 2016-17 comprising Michael Goveas, Naveen Mascarehnas, Jane Castelino, Francis Pinto, Vijai D’Cunha, Dynet Fernandes and Philomena Saldanha.
