Mangaluru, Jun 3: Mangaluru South MLA J R Lobo briefed about the necessary actions being taken to get Mangaluru smart city in the second list of smart City project.

Addressing a press meet here at his office on June 3, Lobo said "We were all ambitious that we would make it in the first list of smart cities but due to various reasons, we could not achieve it. Davanagere was chosen based for its place Mandakki Colony while Belagavi was selected for its Cantonment Area and its history. Old Port of Mangaluru has rich history. Major export of spices and other commodities were done from Mangaluru old port some years back. Lakshadweep was completely dependent on Mangaluru Old Port for all its imports but presently 80 percent of the exports are being executed from Kerala,"

"Mangaluru Old Port is the unique selling point of the city (USP) which provides employment to large number people. So this time we have taken our Old Port as the major concentration and we are preparing the proposal. If we develop the old port, then it will help generate more employment in fishing industry and export also. Thus we have chosen to develop Old Port in order to be chosen in the Smart City proposal. We are leaving no stone unturned to make it this time in the list of Smart Cities of India. We have already signed a Memorandum of Association (MOU) with Lakshadweep and they would be constructing a jetty at Old Port," Lobo added.

"Tile factories of Mangaluru cannot be re-established due to various reasons and cashew industry is also facing shortage of raw materials. By developing Old Port, it will help in realising tourism potential, export revenue. By these developments, the city will grow along with the creation of employment. So I urge the people to extend their full cooperation for getting Mangaluru in the second list of Smart Cities." Lobo concluded.

Congress leaders Balakrishna Shetty, Denis D'Silva, A C Vinayraj, Lancelot Pinto, Appi and others were present.

    Dears,
Mangaluru was a small town grown into a small city without any infrastructure and planning. Forget about Smart City, doesn't deserve to be called as City, the narrow roads,no foot paths, unruly traffic flow, frequent unjustified power cuts, is so pathetic.

    Lobo sir,
As long as there is stigma of 'moral police' and 'cow chasing' smart city is just illusion.

Smart city need smart thinking people.Mangaloreans despite good education background lacks this qualities.

Today's Mangaloreans are highest communally polarised than good days of 70's and 80's.

Mangaloreans need to be wise smart to elect 'Congress mukth' and 'communal mukth BJP' in the coming election.

It is good idea of old port overhaul. Before that can we have proper roads and footpaths .
Clean drinking water.we need visionary peoples who can think about 50 or 100 years ahead.we need planers who can plan ahead of 50 years not contractors who apply bitumen on 1906 bull cart ways and say this is highway.our roads are not for today's speed, same way the drainage system is not d. you will say smart city and water is in Arabian sea.and finally how many public parks in this city how many sulabh shawchalay in this city. what is the transport system in this city.is this will be connected by any better transport system .Lobomam ashi sngchak chand assa.Amgel city ashi korchak duddu jawk noi ve

The question of Mangalore becoming a smart city is a distance dream and will remain as dream for ever. Unless we rectify our shortcomings first, dream of Mangalore city becoming a smart city is like building castles in the air. How many shortcomings to qualify for smart city are there, name to few like no proper infrastructures, no proper roads, drainage, foot paths, pedestrian crossings(Zebra crossings)Filthy traffic system, bureaucratic approach, power shortage, unrest in the city,Goondaism, corruption, nepotism, robbery, murders, rapes, drinking water problem, labour unrest, sky rocketing prices of daily consumable items, exorbitant hospital bills for medical treatments etc.Can you solve all these things?
When we are lagging in these entire basic facilities, how one can expect about the Mangalore becoming a “Smart City”. First, pay your attention towards streamlining all these snags, lacunaes, then think about our smart city.
We the citizens of Mangalore city are very happy to see that our city becoming “Smart City”. Nothing wrong in “Thinking big”, utilize the allotted funds properly and deliver the goods properly and provide clean and transparent administration. Then automatically, we will qualify for ‘Smart City’.Before that don’t think about that.

Sir,Some of the issues that are irksome " How many shortcomings to qualify for smart city are there, name to few like no proper infrastructures, no proper roads, drainage, foot paths" are due to lack of responsibility and accountability. If there is code for holding the employee( MCC etc) then these problems can disappear and set a " SMART" precedent for others.

We need to exhibit " smartness" and establish cause and consequences.

Port is very important thing. You can gain through business not only with Lakshadweep also you can do business as far with Gujarat and Kolkata. It can open transhipment from Chennai to Mangalore for less than container load shipment. Please work on this development.

The Ro-Ro service of carrying trucks from Mangalore to Hazira ( Gujarat ) by ship did not catch up and was recently stopped due to heavy loss. While trucks were loaded on the ship by their respective drivers, the drivers had to travel to Hazira by bus or train to Mumbai and from there to Hazira. This was because the ship travelled into international waters.

A hovercraft between Mangalore / Gokarna/ Karwar /Goa and Lakswadeep would have boosted tourism.

Dear friends I had taken up this issue(uplifting the old port) when we had a discussion at Kadri Park when they were shortlisting the cities to become smart cities. I also taken up the issue of a charge at the docks for what do you get parking when you are at the docks. First look into the roads and parking, footpaths, and abolishing the private bus mafia in our city. Some places in Mangalore we see the road and footpaths are the same and this makes the motorists to park on the footpaths and makes pedestrians to walk on the roads, our corporators and MLA should look into it.

    I agree,
The Concreted Roads with sharp edges on either side and without footpaths are a kind of Deathtrap.

rich history will not matter if you are creating smart city. what matters is honest attitude to serve citizens. Without even getting featured in so called smart city list, i am sure we can become smart city. After all it just needs proper utilization of allocated funds than swallowing them.

look at highway planning from Surathkal to Ekkuru, looks completely absurd and unscientific for me !
