Mangalore, Jun 15: Newly-elected MLA J R Lobo and eight corporators were felicitated at a programme organized by St Sebastian Church, Bendore, held in the St Sebastian Silver Jubilee Hall here on Saturday, June 15.

Naveen R D’Souza, Sabitha Misquith, Ashok Kumar D K, Vinay Raj AC, Keshava, Asha D’Silva, Roopa D Bangera and Akhila Alva were the corporators who were felicitated.

Speaking on behalf of all the elected members who were honoured, J R Lobo said that being a corporator or an MLA was not just about rising to a high status or position. "Along with the position, there are lots of responsibilities to be fulfilled. Only one tenth of the people remember the work done by us."

He added, "Tell us our mistakes directly so as to help us serve better. In the same way, support our good works, so as to double our spirit to serve better."

In his presidential address, Fr Antony Serrao, parish priest of Bendore Church, said, "We have our own government on the dais today. We trust that the local corporators and the MLA will help bring development in our area, ward and the parish. Let the work begin from our ward, and then, after seeing our development, the other wards too will strive hard, finally leading to the development of the whole state and the nation."

"Let us focus on being Mangaloreans first, rather than harbouring difference based on religion and caste. Let us be secular and strive for the overall development of the ward, city, state and the nation," he added.

Fr Paul Crasta, Fr John Baptist, Fr Michael Santhumayer, Ronald Mayer and Laveena John were present on the dais.

Prabhumam, most probably none of the temples or the mutts have invited him to felicitate. If they did he would have certainly accepted that, & you guys would have certainly praised him as a leader of all communities. He was invited in the church for felicitation including members of other communities & you guys simply branded him as communal.

Pre election Loboman was a simple, humble, non corrupt, responssive, accepted by all across the religions.Though I do not give any marks for him for having started his election root from a hindu templ, then visiting church, masjid etc.,I see in him sea change in outlook after electon result. After his win of MLA contest he is seen mostly in felicitation functions of chuches, christian people, organisations like Komu Sauhardha Vedike etc.,giving a feeling that whether this was that Lobomam who was before election.I never expected this change. If initil change is this what will happen in coming days.People from all regions majority fom Hindus have voted him to power which he should not forget. This is my sincere opinion without any prejeduce.

I don't understand why this felicitation by Churches and priests to political leaders elected by public people. Church leaders are supposed to give spiritual guidance and advice to common people. I dont understand why this special affection on Corporators and MLAs by church leaders. What message our church leaders are giving to the public? It looks to me priests are forgetting their duties and trying to get involved in unnecessary propaganda and publicity. Those public people involved in arranging this felicitation, please understand the difference between politics and religion, and let the elected people do their work peacefully. Am shocked to read Fr. Serrao's statement 'We have our own government on the dais today'! what does it mean? Does he mean to say that the present government is only of catholics? shame on us for accepting this statement. Congress has come to power because people got fed-up with BJP ruling. Looking at Congress drama since last 3-4 months it looks that congress is busy felicitating themselves and not taking care of their duties. Congress leaders please wake-up and put yourself into actions.

I think there is no necessity topin ppoint the mistakes but still for the betterment of citizens of Mangalore you are required to provide basic facilities. But not immediately, you can provide them in a phased manner on its importance basis. We know that you will fulfill our needs during your term of 5 years and again come back with flying colours. Dear Sir,

Please work to provide us decent public transport system, storm water drainage and footpaths. There is ample space for foot path between Kankanady to Nanthoor and between Mallikatte center and Kadri Petrol Pump. At present pedestrians have no place to walk on the streets.
Private buses are a big messy affair in Mangalore. These buses don’t move unless it is pushed by the bus behind them and after half way they rush , accelerating and braking thus giving jolts to the passengers. The agony of passengers increases during Hot and humid conditions. Some buses have tarpaulin and during rainy season half of the seats gets water logged and to add to the misery of travelling blind folded in these buses.
Please introduce 50% KSRTC buses in all routes (Good example of orderly way of operating KSRTC bus is in route no. 51k to Mudipu). People have given you power. Please exercise them and come to their rescue. Please call bus Owners representatives and give them stern warning regarding dangerous way of operating public transport before cancelling their licenses. We want to see some improvement in the next 2-3 months.

    Mr. Rajesh Shetty,

Fr.Anthony Serrao felt proud that his parish community members ( though he felicitated corporators from non-catholic communities too) have been chosen by all community-faith people, and he wishes/prays for elected representatives to do good to society irrespective of caste/creed/community.

As religious leaders, they too have voting rights in the role of a citizen, and they too have right for opinion to choose a government. They too will have to vote for a candidate who safeguards their community. Let us respect that.

I would not hesitate to say any elected representatives as " our own government" if they work sincerely for betterment of society. We must feel proud with such a government irrespective of political affiliations. If your relative is MP or MLA, what would you call him ? Dont you say he/she is my relative ? Does it been he/she is entitled to work for relatives?

I never heard anywhere J.R. Lobo saying - " I wil work only for christian community " !! He has proved in his civil service that he helped people irrespective of caste/creed. We have to wish him well to work for all communities. And ofcourse give FEEDBACKS n CRITICISMS !!

    Thank You.

Mr. Rajesh Shetty, the word " Our people " means a lot to some and to others it means nothing but this word too disturbs.

I had attended 125 Mangalore Diocese celebration at Rosario Church and at Nehru Maidan. Bishop Dr. Aloysius said the same word OUR PERSON ( in Konkani - Amcho monees) at Nehru Maidan when then the CM Mr. Sadananda Gowda, was the Chief Guest and he addressed the gathering. This word has a warmth meaning.

If the felicitation is during working hrs, then it is a question mark. But if it is on holidays and on evening time, then it should not be a issue. This is my opinion.

Karnataka people cannot not forget that. More importantly BJP supported the moral policing and paid the price for it. You should understand...corruption is there in every party and we have to fight to stop corruption. BJP by supporting moral policing was trying to take away our freedom to live, which 37% Karnataka people felt that is the first priority. Don't think that you are intelligent. Also don't be scared for those moral policing guys if they get punished for their crimes.

It is nearing 6 months since the corporators were elected and nearly a month the MLA's were elected. Enough of Felicitations and enough of ribbons are cut. Time to start realistic work. The Mistakes to be pointed out that has been existing for many years - 1. The Ration Card problems the oridinary citizens are facing. The documents required to be submitted alongwith application, creating several windows to receive applications, applications to be written in either kannada or english and give the applicants a slip to contact the ration officials personally after 15 days to 20 days to check the status or to collect the card. Dont keep waiting for hours together. 2. The Markets in the whole of D.K. is so dirty and filthy that today even underwears and socks are sold in AC showrooms. I feel ashamed to see the markets that is meant for human consumption. There should be certain amount of hygiene. 3. The roads - there are no footpaths, there is no cycling lanes, there is dog menace, there is no pedestrians crossing and there's many such problems. We have accumulated a 65 years problems and if we don't start today, mark my words, we will be going into further doldrums over the years to come that no man on this earth can set it right.

Well Mr Sharath, there is some truth in what you say but not completely.

People have a fundamental right to express emotion be in good or bad. Firstly, minority religious groups are facilitating the leaders, who if you notice are not of the same minority denomination. At this felicitation there is a good mix of people being facilitated who belong to diverse religious groups. Sorry to say and I am willing to stand corrected, have you heard any mutt or temple facilitating people of other denominations??

Well if the mutts and temples want to do so they can do so too, even now. No one is stopping them. Once upon a time they "preferred to chose" whom they wanted to felicitate. So today if a religious denomination is chosing to do so in an unbiased fashion I don't see any issue with that.

Secondly, your opinion is valid and I guess people take all this in good spirit. It is your opinion and you have a right to opinion and you have opined well.

I completely agree with you that these facilitation are getting a bit prolonged now and the elected representatives need to infact, start declining these and start focusing on the real challenge at hand.

But I would not endorse the view that felicitations should be stopped because they are being done by a particular minority group.

The corporators and MLA are elected by the general public and therefore even you and your freinds are free to felicitate them. Whether you would do it is another question :)

    Dear Elcent
W.r.t felicitation I would like to endorse my friend Ismail Perinje's view's here.
Let the public or religious groups or any organisation felicitate the elected representatives at the end of their current tenure for any good works they delivered. Let them felicitate after a year of good works or for any particular good work they did for their constituency. We will also do our bit by congratulating them in this forum as we are not at our natives currently. Let a Villagers/school/community centers or urban people felicitate their elected rep for after their needs have been fulfilled, then it makes sense.
Winning a elections not all or deserves all the felicitation. If there is right wave for the party or a right wave against a particular party even people like Navin Kumar Kateel gets elected to MP seat or Bava gets elected to MLA seat and they takes salute from the IPS. Renuka also gets elected, Shobha/Eshu,Haalappa or CT Ravi, DKshi/Gowda Family also gets elected if a party plays their card right today. Even for that matter jumping jack Pooja Gandhi would have also won if stood from a right party but for what ? Just because they got elected does not mean they have scaled the mount Everest to celebrate months of felicitations.
Do your job right first then you deserve to take all the accolades from whomsoever. That's all noting personnel.

This will have a negative impact as he now represents all communities and all religious followers from his constituency. I would have appreciated if he were to give a call to the christian community to actively participate in nation building as equal partners instead of labelling themselves as minorities, or keeping themselves aloof, begging for dole outs from the government, thereby becoming easy targets for the extreme right like the BD, RS, RSS etc.

    AJITH,

I HAVE ONE QUESTION TO YOU AND ALL THOSE WHO SPEAK ABOUT THE CHURCH ATTACKS. INDEED SHAMEFUL BUT WHAT WILL YOU DO ONCE YOU KNOW WHO DID IT AND WHAT WILL YOU DO AFTER THAT.

MY SUGGESTION IS MOVE ON. THATS WHAT LIFE IS ALL ABOUT. IF WE GET STUCK IN THE OLD MUCK WE WILL ROT AND NEVER COME OUT.

WE HAVE GIVEN JR LOBO THE MANDATE TO DO GOOD AND IMPROVE OUR CONSTITUENCY. NO GOOD IS GOING TO COME OUT BY DIGGING OLD GRAVES. IT WILL BE A WASTE OF ALL OUR TAX PAYERS MONEY AND MOST IMPORTANTLY TIME.

I WOULD SAY IMPROVE THE POWER SITUATION, IMPROVE THE ROADS, DONT SUCCUMB TO LOBBYISTS. FOCUS ON HOW TO MAKE MANGALORE A MODEL CITY.

IN ALL THIS, IF SOMEWHERE THERE IS SCOPE AND TIME TO FIND OUT WHAT WENT WRONG WITH THE CHURCH ATTACKS SURELY DO SO.

ITS TIME WE FOCUSED ON DEVELOPMENTS RATHER THAN ISSUES WHICH ONLY MAKE LIFE DARKER.

The people who committed heinous crimes against the community in the the garb of so called moral policing should be exposed and brought to justice. So that in future nobody dares to commit such cowardly acts. Law and order, justice are also part of development. Let the law take its own cource.

    Mr Lobo,

Perpetrators need to be bought to justice but do we have the time and luxury to find them and even if we did then what.

Is it even going to stop future incidents? No one  going to hang them to set an example? We have incidents in Indian history again and again with even fiercer atrocities and people have been prosecuted but what has changed?

Finally my friend if we live the Christian way these should not bother us or else there will be no difference between Christians and others. This is the differentiation Christianity brings. Forgiveness!!

South Kanara was once the bastion of Congress. People so much loved congress that they blindly voted for congress whoever the candidate is.
For me the biggest mistake the congress has made is : The elected respresentatives visited only once to their constituencies, that too during the election time. I am ashamed of this and ashamed of my party whom I voted for. The same MP who is elected from other party always reaches to the needs of the people, atleast visting the constituency regularly.

Dear Mr Lobo and Corporators Felicitation should be politely discouraged and instead it should be accepted after one year's minimum service.Such kind of felicitations are just waste of time and has no meaning @ all.Let people felicitate after making postmortem of service rendered by people's rep.Every hour is precious and in fact, spent on people's/voter's welfare(as you asked to ink mistakes...that is what I have to say)

Lobo sir, first mistake you are making is accepting the honours from all around and wasting your time. people honour you not for your achievement, but for thier own benifit.
You can be role model to current political community, by politely denying the honours and felicitation.
It's now time to concentrate for developmental work.

This is a good initiative. Let us develop our wards first, then state...it will be a chain reaction....!!?? There must be a competition among political leaders for development and not to make money for themselves. But present scenario is different than development. It need to changed for better tomorrow.

    BROTHER LOBO,
YOU ARE TRULY LIVING FOR THE PEOPLE AROUND YOU.
KEEP THE VALUES AT THE HIGHEST MY FRIEND.
CRISIS OF CONFIDENCE IS RULING THE AIR OF POLITICS.
WE LOOK FORWARD TO YOUR FRANK AND HONEST APPROACH TO LAST FOR 5 FULL YEARS.
SELFLESS POLITICS IS OFTEN DIFFICULT TO ACHIEVE.
    HOWEVER THERE ARE EXCEPTIONS.
I WANT TO SEE J.R. LOBO IN THE SAME LEAGUE AS ATALJI, SHASTRIJI AND THE LIKES...
IT IS MORE IMPORTANT TO BE A HUMBLE CHILD OF GOD RATHER THAN BECOME A KING OF THE WORLD.

Tell us our mistakes directly so as to help us serve better. In the same way, support our good works, so as to double our spirit to serve better.
