Udupi: Bajrang Dal attack on prayer house - 19 arrested get interim bail

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SM)

Updated

Udupi, Mar 9:
In connection to the alleged attack by Bajrang Dal on a prayer house at Moodubelle here on the night of Friday March 8, it has now been confirmed that six persons were injured in the attack, and that they have been admitted to hospitals.

Contrary to intial reports, Roshan, a member of Bible Society, was not among those admitted to hospital, but his mother Emilia Lobo, Surya (38) from Karkala, Shantaram, Prem Mendonca (16) and Savio Johnson, a second year student of engineering have been admitted to Ajjarkad hospital. Another injured, identified as Ramesh has been admitted to KMC hospital with serious injuries.

As many as 19 persons said to be belonging to Bajrang Dal have been arrested. They are Ritesh Shetty (22), resident of Mavina Katte, Nandalike, Karkala, Vishwanath Acharya (22) and Raghavendra Achari (25) of Mattar Janata Colony, Shirva, Anand (22) of Shirva Koppa, Ramesh Shetty (24) of Mattar Janata Colony, Shirva, Suraj Shetty (29) of Mattar Anugraha House, Shirva, Umesh Achari (25) of Sooda, Karkala, Sukesh Poojary (23) of Sooda, Karkala, Dayananda Poojary (30) of Makkeri Bailu, Shirva, Satish (22) of Mattar Jananta Colony, Shirva, Umesh Naik (36) of Sooda, Karkala, Jayaprakash (27) of Mattar Shirva, Prakash Kotian (28) of Shirva, Dilip Kumar (21) of Mattar Janata Colony, Shirva, Ranjith Kumar (21), Anil Kumar Poojary (28), Sandeep Poojary (22) and Suresh Poojary (24) of Mattar, Shirva, and Sadashiva Kulal (36) of Nadibettu, Shirva.

Speaking to media persons, IGP (western range) Pratap Reddy said that immediate action will be taken in the matter. "We are taking this incident seriously. Already around 10 persons have been arrested and the rest will be caught soon. Such kinds of incidents will not be tolerated," he said.

"So far we have not received any complaint from anyone regarding conversion taking place here," he added.

SP Dr Boralingaiah also assured quick action in the case and said that FIR has already been registered against the arrested people. A clear picture will emerge only after further investigations, he added.

Roshan said that around 6 to 8 people were in the prayer house when a group barged in all of a sudden and started assaulting and kicking them. "They did not even care to see who they were attacking," he added.

Roshan took a few mobile clippings on his phone and also informed the SP and Shirva police, who rushed to the spot.

"This prayer house has been in existence from 12 years. Bajrang Dal has given us warnings before but never attacked. Eight years ago they had attempted to attack but timely action by the police had folied their plan," said Roshan, claiming that the group assaulated them this time for around 45 minutes.

He expressed satisfaction over the police action.

The accused were produced in the II JMFC court the same day and released on interim bail. The hearing for the regular bail will be on Monday March 11.

The Holy Book Bible is the Word of God. Definitely, it is mentioned in the Bible itself that the evil force will not tolerate the spreading of Word of God. And might be because of which the evil force through BD came to the fore. But let's pray they repent and change their ways for what they have done. Otherwise no one can stop the power of Almighty Lord who will prevail on them.

The police found a job now. The police should realize the rights of people, and religious freedom in a democratic country. If the seer of Mutt can preach in public then why not pastor cannot share the gospel to public or a fellow passenger in bus on his journey. I would say the police should place notices in public places about the fundamental rights of people. This will create awareness for people who do such acts and they will get educated.

Here is again lack of education and knowledge…….wake up you all BD goons and stop fighting in the name of religion. Seek knowledge, because knowledge teaches we all are same kind human beings irrespective to religion and cast, same color blood, same end, then why fight? The numbers of people died in the name of religion are more than the number of people died with hunger, war and natural calamities!!!!! Who takes religion while dying? I being born and brought up in Moodubelle, never know that this type of evil mind was existing among the village people. Now with the increase of media, people must grow in their widen horizons and give freedom to people in live their belief and faith.
I am shocked to hear that in Kattingeri, such a well planned attack is done by the fundamentalist group. How is that people forget the roots of India's Constitutions. India is a secular country and why do we interfere in the culture and belief of the individuals. I strongly oppose the act by the fundamentalist. I pray that the law makers, keep the law and bring into justice the law breakers. We cannot tolerate no longer the growing evil.

Christians are taught to show other cheek if slaped on one...but unfortunately it does not work out in these modern days....

"Do u have a guts to touch a muslim guy? Touch and c if u have guts "

They do that too,,, but not very often because of resistance...

I think guy they attacked "Pumpwell Service Station" couple case, belong to that religion...

Finally those who rely with sword will perish with sword....

Main reason for these attacks is they know Police will not be tough with them and Govt machinary will help them indirectly,,, in this case too they were charged with lighter offenses and were released by Court same day....

When this govt is changed perhaps these activities get a fullstop...

This article has drawn the attention of thousands of people from different segments of the society. We are all civilized people living in civilized nation. It is for every one to understand that we are all children of mother earth and try to live in PEACE AND HARMONY. How much can the police force do. Here we find that the Inspector General Police Mr. Pratap Reddy himself is present to investigate into the situation. How much time can the Supt. of Police Mr. Borelingiah spend on these issues.

It is for us to understand that we have an obligation to ensure that peace prevails at all costs.

Let not caste and creed not divide us. Let us try and resolve the differences and live in brotherhood respecting the rights of people.

This is my honest question to BD youths. The BD youths who were involved in 2008 Church attack, how many BD members have got a decent permanent job till now.

I do know, Christians who have involved in the protest for 2008 church vandalization and arrested during the protests by the police, many have already in the Middle East earning decent income for them and for their family.

It is the selfish leaders, religious, political are using the youths for wrong purpose, brain washing them and indulging them in wrong activities against others and using the youths for these political, religious leaders business interests.

I do know, some BD who were active members few years back, stopped their involvement, due to vivid reasons.

It is sad that those who instigate these youths sit within 4 walls, are not caught but these youths who are involved in the attack will spoil their career.

Mr. James, it is sad being without knowledge of Word of God you are commenting about New Life, conversion so on. If you seek wisdom from God and read Bible, definitely you will understand the truth and you could be the first one to follow Christ and become a True Christian instead of blindly pointing out at any other denominations. Conversion comes from within and is not at all possible by any pressure or force. And being a RC and moreover without the knowledge of Word of God, it is impossible for you to preach the word to others and hence you are proud to say RC does'nt convert anybody.

This kind of lawless is not allowed in a secular country like India.
Thanks to diligent and rationale administrators who act swiftly against the lawless and those involving in criminal activities inside the country.

    Benny,
Please tell me the diferrence between a religion and denomination
Christainity is a religion and Roman Catholic is a denomination which originated from Rome. Christianity started where christ was( Israel). Do you know why RC was started. Read history and also the bible .No were in the bible is roman catholic mentioned as a religion. Our religion is chrstianity thats it .Catholics, evangelic , protestant etc are all denominations. Please the read the bible, you dont have any clue of what the RC church believes in.Because your a sunday church attendant not a Christian. In every church they should start bible study so that u can understand wats the last commandment is and whether the church believes in it or not. If you are a chrstian then we must follow every word of God.You cant ignore it or ommit anything from it.

You are wrong Stephen. Christianity is a religion of Love & where there is love there is peace. Hence spreading hatred and revenge does not suit us. If the conversions are forcible then they are definitely wrong & not in line with any religion. But on the other hand if someone chooses to convert by his own free will then it is his personal choice. What BD has done is definitely wrong and should be condemned, but peacefully. We should all pray for BD for the change of heart towards other religions.

Some people here ask Gerald Fernandies to comment on this issue. He is doing a great job on infrastructure development and other needy jobs of Moodubelle and surroundings. Let him carry on with the good job he is doing. For religion and community based issues there are many religion heads and social workers. There is law and order to attend any violence and atrocities. Give police a free hand to tackle such issues.

    1. A film has many actors. A hero, a heroine, a villain, support cast, etc. Do they act on their own? Not at all. There is a director, a script writer, etc who make these people dance to their tunes.

    2. There are many pieces on a chessboard. King, Queen, Knight, Bishop, etc. Do they move on their own? Not at all. There is a Grandmaster who plays them around.

Fortunately, in both of the aforementioned examples, the Director and the Grandmaster are known to the public.

Capable I.G. has done excellent job.
We should be generous in complimenting the good work, to get reciprocation.
Police swiftly caught hold of all the attackers.
Honorable I.G. published their names and addresses. All that is well within his authority, he can not do anything beyond that legally.
He gave his press statement also!

Any educated, sensible person would condemn this type of atrocity by the jobless, uneducated thugs who call themselves affiliated to BajrangDal. This is utter nonsense that Police taking action on the members of these groups after the incident. Looks like this case will also go down the drain after few days and these thugs will be out again looking out for a new victim. However, I am sure this will not last long, and in the coming state elections, it appears to me that the BJP is going to lose its power and I am hopeful that these groups are going to get silenced. I am looking forward for a day when our whole Karnataka gets back to its glory days with no communal conflicts and peace among its people. The big question here is , who is going to bear the mental, financial and medical loss suffered by the victims. Police need to make an honest effort in getting the compensation from these group members for the losses suffered by the victims. I personally like the idea from Edward Nazereth, Shankarpura/ Udupi, that Police should target these goons families and call them for interrogation and put them behind bars for few days when such incidents happen and see how these thugs will react to this kind of treatments by the police?...All said is done, but at the end what is required by the police is that they should just do their duty as per the laws of the country and protect its citizens to uplift their rights.

Dear Readers and Comenters of Daijiworld,

I personally went through the comments as well as news published here and the news depicted in various channels in various ways. Let me make some points clear to you,

    * I know Mr. Roshan Lobo, Moodbelle and his prayer group for a long time and to my knowledge there is/was no forcible or any kind of conversion there.

    * Many people do go there for prayers and are healed spiritually, physically as well as mentally.

    * They dont practice any religion there. They just preach the Bible and the principles of Christ for living the life in a better way.

    * Christian or Christianity is not religion. Any person (Hindu/Muslim/Catholic/jew/sikh) who follows and abides by the teaching of Bible n Jesus Christ is a Christian.

    * All Catholics ar not Christians and all Christians are not Catholics.

    * No one can force any person to be a Christian. It is a personal decision.

Dear Mr. Dr S kamath , Mumbai,

Religious freedom was allowed in Saudi Arabia. Go to google and check.

A person or a group of persons can worship God inside the four walls.

The prayers should not be a problems to outsiders. If any person complains about prayers are giving night-less sleep or gives troubles to residents then only the question will crop-up. Even if so negotiations will take place. Becoz prayers are not criminal activities anywhere in the world.

Saudi Arabia has changed a lot unlike olden days primitive and traditional ways were followed.

The time has come Bajrang Dal should be banned for ever and nobody has the right to attack any other person as per Indian Laws.

As forced conversion is a hot topic I like to share following:
It is our understanding and experience that Life (Spiritual) is in God alone. Man lost the Spiritual life because of their sin and became slave to the fleshly, worldly passions &desires and its master the devil.World of God Galatians 19-21 says: The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and wickedness idolatry and witchcraft hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy drunkenness, orgies, and the like.
Those who live and guided by such fleshly desires are the root cause of corruption, Looting, Rapes, murder, Rowdiesm, Goondaiesm, destruction, unlawful activities etc ,
But Jesus concurred the devil on the cross and regained back the spiritual life for mankind and that life is in Him. World of God Galatians 19-20 says: But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
Those who are rooted in God through Christ Jesus and experience his Love and fruit of the spirit ,works for His family as His children. It is their desire that everyone regains the spiritual life that comes from God and experiences him. With that unconditional love they are sharing word of God even though they are going through enormous trails, troubles, persecution. They are like Gods salesperson. is left to the individuals to accept or reject Gods word and come to the faith if they are convinced. Servants of God call it born again in the family of God and in worldly language we call it conversion. Of course in propagating word of God there shall not be any force or inducements.
As these are pure personal matters, obstruction by third person or organization is nothing but intruding in their personal life and is Rowdiesm. They are category 1 people above driven by acts of flesh and will bring only destruction, discord and hatred.

Kiran's comments about wiping out certain sects is unwarranted. He is no better than the bajrang dal when he makes such irresponsible comments which should not even be published in the first case. No body is above the law to finish anyone. Moreover let Kiran tell in these columns how did his ancestors become Catholics. Is it due to conversion or he does not know history? Does he have any idea of Goa inquisition? Let him remember for that matter that all Christians in India are the result of conversion. So if someone is preaching their faith it is for the person to get convicted and decide if he or she would like change to another faith. Even Jews got converted to Christianity when they heard Jesus preach and thereafter the 12 apostles shook the world with the Good News.

    Dear Dr. S. Kamath,
Why don't you kindly assist Mr. Poojary of Nallasopara in filing a FIR if people around him are forcing him to convert? If at all there are any converts who were converted by compulsion, inducement or through financial or economic favours, why don't they come forward and report the matter?

Let it be clear that Christian missionaries are not all interested in increasing our population. Followers of Christ are obliged to preach and propagate the Faith and not to convert anybody by force. I have stated in my earlier comments also that genuine conversion is a transformation of heart and conscience which takes place after a thorough study, understanding and willful acceptance of the faith. So those who have been converted by force should report the matter to the concerned authorities.

Its when people like kiran, mangalore/dubai exist is when christians or the innocent become victims or vulnerable to such attacks. The man has forgotten that be it New life/ Old life or even catholic at the end , its all about being a good Christian or also about being a good human . Having a cheap thought that such attacks are caused due to the existence of new life , anglicans or anyone else for that matter is disgusting. Even hindus and muslims have different castes in their religion but they don't go around blaming their own .. Where has it been proven that the guys who got attacked today were converting or causing any nuisance to the people around?? Where does it say that praying together is wrong? Does the law in india permit someone to hit the young and the OLD for praying somewhere .. Stop provoking people Mr Kiran. No religion teaches you to wipe out anyone.. All you can do is wipe out the dirt in your mind.. Thats when BD or any one else will stop doing all this as no one will think of supporting such uncultured people.. Let us be a good human first and then the rest...

Dr.Kamath.. it is very painfull to hear hatefull comments from a well learned person as you appear to be.. I do not understand why ppl get voilent when it comes to religion.. Who is God?? Have you seen him..? then why so much hatred towards ppl of other religious beliefs? Religions basically seem to have come to existence to reduce the violence..For ppl to be afraid of sme divine power.. For ppl to seek divine intervention when lost all hope..to teach our children good moral values..To look upon some unseen divine power to help us in our daily activities.. Basically to love each human being as oneself.. but sadly these days ppl have become savages .. fighting for religion?? i mean what the heck? sometimes i feel we are going backwards.. into our uncivilized ancestors.. and the more educated ppl are the more madness is increasing.. Mr.Kamath you gave an example of one of your patient who is crying of the torture day and night to be converted.. cant he stand for himself? is he so weak to say no?? how can anyone force any individual into anything?
he sure must have taken a favor from the people who are so called forcing him into conversion.. otherwise what does he have to fear for? this whole conversion thing is rubbish.. it is utter madness taking such lame examples and looking at things from one side.. and to make things worse our so called Political leaders bring religion for their own benefit. We should try to understand that the any anti religious organizations are babies of our politicians.. Let us not feed these babies..otherwise they will mature and make our society hell.I Don't think anyone would want their future generations to suffer because of our stupidity. There is only one religion called Humanity.. Let us all follow that religion first..I really miss our old calm and people loving Dakshina Kannada.. There would be no other heaven than earth if people would respect each others beliefs and live together in harmony..This is the need of the hour people..

    2. Are they aware Hare Rama Hare Krishna Mission is preaching Geetha all over the world and all communities attending it ? Shouldn't it be called conversion?
    3. Mata Amruta Devi preaching, and her her devotees are from all religions, according to us she is good job, but according to B.D. yard sticks her preaching too is conversion?
    4. Bajranga Dal is having so much Muscle power and Money, why didn't they attempted to protect Kidnapped RTI Activist Vasudev Adiga ? and other day young 21 year old guy committed suicide on Railway tracks for NO HELP COMING from any corners?
    5. What efforts B.D. is making to protect their community members from suicide, rape, kidnap and from drug peddlers trap?

What BD does is well known. I do not think any elaboration is required on the activities of BD. Many are fighting criminal cases and some are absconding. I am perplexed at some of the reactions of the readers. Any crime can be reported to the police. Beating somebody is inhuman and uncivilized. Law the land is sacred. Roman catholic church does not encourage conversion but still people choose to attack these places of worship.the real culprits are the so called new-lifes and born again who indulge in conversion.its open that these groups convert on some pretext or the other but no one should beat up anyone.by beating up 1 person the so called conversion camp doesnt close...it just shifts to another location.i suggest to all my hindu brothers not to take out their wrath on catholics and catholic churches because from what i know about catholics and living with them in the same place they are a peace loving community who dont support newlifes or any such sub christian group or whatever.catholics and hindus have co-existed peacefully for so long until these new lifes cropped up with their centres in mangalore and surrounding areas.misunderstanding by hindu and their attacking churches has created an unseen rift among peace loving people of mangalore. wake up my catholic brothers n sisters and hindu brothers and sisters and wipeout newlife and their groups from mangalore so we can peacefully co-exist again and maintain communal harmony.

    Sharath,

Thank you for a sincere question. These groups are called believers, they do not come under a established catholic religion. Catholics do not believe and follow in the last commandment of Christ, which says go, teach all nations and baptise. This essentially means conversion out of love.
However nowadays there are a lot of genuine followers of Christ who understand the commandment of love and want to teach about christ to as many people as possible despite persecution , from those who do not understand. They are very different from catholic religion.

    Thanks Benny for the reply
Even though I had this lil info that Yes it had nothing much to do with RC, i just wanted to clear the air.
If I am not wrong, BD or all these organizations are having problems with these groups and not with Christians as a whole weather its RC's or Protestants. By sayign this I am not justifying their act, YES they just do not have right to take law & order to their hands as nobody has given them authority. But unfortunetly they have even inflicted a unhealable wound on peace loving catholics in & around DK and permanently made this one scar where its been ended up like a communal sensitive situation, like those between Hindhus & muslims durign the time of riots. But I hope the intelligent & peace loving people of Mangalore will think and live above all these politics and prove to these people that our unity cannot be spoilt by such cheap acts.

True after these people attack roman catholic churches. Conversion by force is not allowed . However it is constitutional right if anyone wishes to convert.

    Dear Vishal:

You are totally wrong. You do not know what is Christianity. Christianity is, those who believe Christ died for our sins and confess their sins and take the baptism by immersion. Infant does not need baptism by sprinkling few s of water can never be called baptism, morally, spiritualy and physically too. By going to Roman catholic church, or CSI church or even pentecostal church, can never make you a Christian. Church is never a building but the group of believers. I have been a priest for 46 years and I have studied the Bible and church history. Correct your eroneous mistakes and be a good Christian.

Voluntary conversion is not banned in India as ours is a democratic country and all have the right to choose the religion they want to follow. however, forced conversion is not allowed. But, by force nobody can change ones religion. But, assaulting anybody on any pretext is a crime in India.

Conversation with out integrity, honest and feeling of oneness will not bring any good to converted and one who convert. As said by Vishal, certain groups in Christian Community making free noises which brings bad repute to Catholics who are not interested in such kind of activities. Taking law in to own hand condemnable and I am not in a position to believe BEEDI version of story as they are accustomed to do in any given issues.Attacking ROSHAN by ten BDs vouches their courage!!!!Well done Police already booked cases against them

Religion or faith is not growing the number of followers. Neither religion is about punishing those who dont follow it.
Rather....religion is about following and living it.

Having said this....I dont find anyone correct.

Come on guys.... live your life, follow your religion and Go to heaven.

God knows how to protect his followers and faith. Do you think god is not capable of it?????

You still want the BJP to come to power?
You want the society and the communities to be dictated by a handful of anti-social elements?
You want the people of Karnataka to again make the same mistake and elect the greedy, corrupt, religion exploiting and temple funding BJP instead the development oriented party?
How long BJP will divide and rule its own people?
Please turn this banana republic of Sangh Parivar into a mature democracy and "Democracy is the government of the people, by the people, for the people".

    Well done Bajrang Dal..
Reason behind Bajrang Dal and Ramsene not in america or in european countries..no body bother to convert other's...!! if they wish to enter other religion it's there choice..!! New Life/Bible Society/New Born Again are doing such jobs..there are more than 100 sub-divisions of christanity in kerala itself..its spreading now to karnataka..!!Missonaries are only in India..not in african countries..!! People do not have Food..No conversion..!!

Some people think that by giving the Holy Book others will change their faith. This is stupidity. The conversion is possible only when the people feel the good deeds towards the neighbor.

There are some prayer groups doing all sorts of nakra and the end result is Catholics are blamed for their action due to ignorance.

You are right until the church attacks that happened last time, none of the non-Christian communities knew about these groups called new-life etc etc.

But now most of them are aware of the facts and groups responsible. Problem is such groups disperse and there is no specific identity but the Roman Catholic community has a distinct identity and that is our Church and our gatherings there. So people, when they confronted a problem did'nt know what to do so they in turn attacked the Roman Catholic Churches.

Relationship between the Roman Catholic and the local folk was so good till then. Now it had turned sour for no reason
