Another Islamist to die for Bangladesh war crimes


Dhaka, Nov 24 (IANS): A special court Monday sentenced to death another Islamist leader who committed war crimes during Bangladesh's 1971 Liberation War.

The International Crimes Tribunal-1 in Bangladesh delivered the sentence against Mohammed Mobarak Hossain, a former Razakar commander from Akhaura.

The tribunal, headed by Justice M. Enayetur Rahim, upheld charges that Hossain slaughtered 33 civilians on the banks of Ganga Sagar Dighi Aug 22, 1971, bdnews24.com reported.

Born in Akhaura, Mobarak was associated with the Jamaat-e-Islami during the war that led to the secession of East Pakistan and its creation as an independent Bangladesh.

Hossain later joined the Awami League but was expelled from it in 2011.
