New Delhi, Nov 3: The Indian Navy has rescued all 20 crew members of an Iranian fishing vessel hijacked by armed pirates in the Arabian Sea, completing a challenging 48-hour operation more than 3,000 km from Mumbai on November 2.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh announced the successful operation and congratulated the Navy for its coordinated response. In a post on X, Singh said the Navy had carried out a meticulously planned mission to rescue the crew members of the vessel, Azini, which had been seized by heavily armed pirates.

The operation involved locating and intercepting the hijacked vessel before securing the safe release of all 20 crew members. The Indian Air Force also provided timely assistance during the mission.

Praising the personnel involved, Singh said the swift localisation, interception and safe release of the crew and vessel demonstrated the Navy's operational readiness and ability to respond decisively to maritime threats across the region.

He said the successful mission reflected India's commitment and capability to protect human lives and maintain security across the Indian Ocean Region. Singh reiterated that India remained resolute in ensuring safe seas and a free, open and secure Indian Ocean Region.

The vessel Azini was reportedly hijacked on October 29 between the coastal towns of Bandar Bayla and Hafun in northeastern Somalia, according to a maritime security officer with the Puntland Maritime Police Force who spoke to The Associated Press.

The rescue highlights the Indian Navy's role in tackling maritime security threats beyond India's immediate coastal waters and safeguarding seafarers across the wider Indian Ocean Region.
