Udupi, Oct 22: Noted Yakshagana artiste of the earlier decades, Udyavar Basava Ganiga (82), passed away here on Friday, after prolonged illness.

He is survived by three sons and three daughters.

Ganiga had an accomplished artiste of both 'Tenkutittu' and 'Badagutittu' formats of Yakshagana.

Hailing from the well-known Harady household, began his career with petty roles like Abhimanyu and Babhruvahan and later on started playing female characters like those of Subhadra, Dakshayani and Chitrangada.

One of his sons, Jayakumar Udyavar, is also a well-known Yakshagana artiste.
